Yep, the original Droid is stock and still had Motorola mucking with it before it was pushed OTA.
Are you sure it was Motorola and not Verizon? they do their own testing and such before the OTA is released.

Well, it doesn't really matter which one if both means that the consumers don't have it yet.

Augen's $150 Android tablet hits Kmart circular, coming to stores later this week - Engadget

augen.jpg

We can't say we've heard of Augen before, but the company certainly sparked our interest (and that of Kmart circular readers) this weekend with its $149.99 7-inch Android tablet. Oh yes, you heard right shoppers -- the small Florida-based shop is bringing an Android 2.1 tablet with WiFi, 2GB of storage and 256MB of RAM to a store near you for just 150 buckaroos. And according to an Augen spokesperson, it will have access to the Android "Market App Store." That sounds pretty awesome for the pricetag, but we -- along with a number of readers we've heard from -- haven't been able to locate the 7-inch tablet at any Kmart retail location just yet. (Yes, we even spent a lovely ten minutes on hold with our local store while they checked the inventory.) We're told by Augen that the device should be hitting shelves later this week, though the company was unsure it would ever land on Kmart's online store. In addition to the 7-inch tablet, Augen has also released its $89 TheBook e-reader with a similar 7-inch LCD. It doesn't run Android, but you can check out an in-depth look at its Linux OS in The eReader's video review after the break. We'll be keeping an ear to the ground on the availability of the tablet and will be trying to get one in our hands to confirm the preloaded Market, but let us know in the comments if you've had any luck yourselves.

Specs are a bit light, but 150 bucks for a tablet is ridonk, maybe the first of many in it's class/price range?

Sales of Google-based Android handsets have rocketed by more than 300 per cent from the first three months of 2010 to the second quarter of the year, more than tripling the size of their share of the UK mobile contract market.

Data compiled by market analysts GfK showed that around one in every eight handset sold in the UK between April and June 2010 on a contract is Android powered compared to one in 33 on average between January and March.

Mobiles with "advanced" operating systems - which we shall call smartphones - now represent 73.5 per cent of the market while the feature phone's share of the mobile contract market fell to less than 28 per cent.

One of the main reasons why Android is in demand has to do with the release of some very high profile Android smartphones like the Sony Ericsson X10 or the HTC Desire, coupled with the increasing number of Android handsets released on the market and the fact that the price of Android handsets, like the ZTE Racer, has fallen under £100 or around £13 per month on contracts.

As a whole, feature phones are now mostly limited to the lowest rung of the market where pricing, rather than features, is most important. Expect the share of the feature phones' market to shrink significantly as the cost of smartphones makes it economically viable to sell £10 monthly contracts.

Probably resistive, and the RAM is pretty lame.

Still, Market access... hrm...

Honestly I am just surprised it has something higher than 1.5 on it, so used to seeing the budget Chinese tablets with 1.5. I think if they made it with a decent touch screen and gps, sold it at 250-300, it would actually be picked up. I am surprised no one has brought something like that to the market yet.

So after far too much time reading reviews and forums about the Samsung Captivate, I think I may jump on this phone. Despite not being 4.3, the hardware is pretty damn impressive.

My only concern is Gingerbread being just around the corner and a whole new line of amazing phones come with it. Should I wait on these or jump on the Captivate?

If you play the waiting game you'll be waiting forever for that new killer handset which might be around the corner.

Im very happy with my galaxy s, and with new firmwares andand froyo it's going to serve me well for quite some time!

There's no telling when Gingerbread will actually roll out, and considering there are numerous phones that have yet to see Froyo, it's even harder to know if Q4 phones will be rocking Gingerbread, so I'd say you might as well jump in if you like the captivate.

My guess is that the Nexus One will get Gingerbread sometime this fall/winter and the other phones will start to see it early next year.

If you are worried about updates, find a phone that has a thriving development presence. That is what I look for after specs. I settled on the Samsung Vibrant after learning how easy gaining root access was and upon learning that CM6 was being developed for it.

As long as their is a development community, updates should be fine. That is putting a lot of faith in people you don't know, but you know what, I have more faith in these online strangers than companies i've known my whole life.

Just checking in. I am in love with my Samsung Captivate. I was a Blackberry faithful before this phone and even then, I only used it for productivity. I've had this phone since Friday and I'm constantly in it doing something. I think all the apps I've gotten from the market place has something to do with it. I just had to make sure it could run Documents to Go as that was a neccessity, but everything else has been amazing to say the least.

This is so true. If you have a flagship carrier device you're fine. Nexus One - of course. Galaxy S line is also fine since its getting Samsung's biggest Android push behind it and it's on all carriers.

Not to mention its ridiculously easy to root. Did mine today just for the heck of it.

Gotta feeling this will have a sizeable modding community behind it, so even if Samsung abandon it after froyo it'll still see future updates.

I can choose a new phone end of this year with my contract. Where are the new phones?

I'm looking for a HTC, but not with the 1 year old Snapdragon processor. Any hints/leaks/specs about the Q4 phones of 2010?

We finally have the Galaxy S Vibrant in our system at work - I think I might finally bite and get this phone - I just need to get some valid ID to freaking get a phone (still don't have a drivers license) - I think I'll just go renew my passport and be done with it.

Purchased a Samsug Intercept for my wife. Hardware feels a bit too plastic like and it's pretty light. In comparion to the Evo, it's noticeably less responsive but still extremely useable. Screen is very nice for the size. Overall a great value for a user who wants the apps and ease of use of Android but doesn't want the titan screen of the Evo.

I think 1Ghz Snapdragons are going to be the standard for a while. All the Win Phone 7's will be using this. The Samsung Epic has a 1Ghz Hummingbird, but I have no idea what the differences are.

Like someone mentioned earlier... you just have to jump in or else you'll always be waiting for the next best thing. I had all intentions of waiting for Win Phone 7, but said screw it and got an Evo.

Mine is rooted, too. A CyanogenMOD developer has been assigned for it. He is going to begin working on the alpha as soon as he is finished with the MyTouch3G Slide. As soon as that starts we'll see a lot of other cookers who are using this as their framework. It will get sorted out. I hope anyway, that is why I purchased one.

Cool, I told my girlfriend to check that phone out -I told her first to go for the Evo, but it's still hard to find!

The intercept looks like it has a great keyboard, and I'm glad it runs android 2.1.

I'm using the Samsung Vibrant on tmobile and I love it. No major issues so far. I'm addicted to the air control game on the marketplace. Seriously addicted.

Well... as some of you may recall a few pages back I went to play with the Captivate a few days back comparing it to my iPhone 4.

I have made the jump and bought the Captivate. The iPhone 4 is a fast, sexy, capable device... but the customization of Android won me over. I had a bad experience with my Nexus One I bought earlier (problems recognizing inputs) and thankfully I have nothing like that happening with the Captivate.

The only issue I have with it so far is the GPS being broken (I have seen the fix where it uses celltower data instead, but I'd like to have real GPS info so I'm waiting for a fix).

I believe someone mentioned a program to remove some of the preinstalled apps? Anyone have the name of that please?

Samsung makes some good solid phones. If she is a "power user", you might convince her to wait for the Epic. It also has the slide-out QWERTY and of course, 4G and a 4" screen.

If not, I'm sure she'll be completely happy with the Intercept. My wife loves it and I only notice the slight delay in response because I'm on the Evo. The other thing missing is HTC Sense. You don't realize how nice that is until you don't have it. You can get HTC Sense like widgets with Launcher Pro and Beautiful Widgets (I think that's the name).

+1

Been playing around with my girlfriend's for the past hour and holy poopers, I can't wait to get my X.

Things is frickin saweet. Even better, my gf, not a technophobe, has been sitting playing with it since I showed her the basics. Even better, she is figuring 90 percent of this stuff on her own. Just wow.

Anyone done an early upgrade to a Captivate? I really don't want to be stuck with this 3GS until August of 2011.

Strangely enough, ATT let me get a Captivate for $199 even though I upgraded to an iPhone 4 for 199 as well.

YMMV

I know this is indirectly hardware related and is all speculative but:

In an unprecedented move for carriers with Android phones, Verizon appears poised to update their entire lineup of high-end Droid phones to Android 2.2 within the next couple of weeks. History tells us that the carriers, handset makers, and Google have been somewhat uncoordinated with previous firmware upgrades, but Verizon has the chance to change that perception by releasing the latest version of Android on four handsets at the same time.

I’ve seen a half-dozen dates thrown around on various sites, but I believe the trigger will occur around the time of an upcoming press conference for Adobe. As many of you know, the upcoming Flash 10.1 requires Android 2.2, so it makes sense for Adobe and Google to tie the events together. Flash 10.1 is currently in Beta 3, but Adobe has an Android related event planned for August 16th and we believe the final version will be released that day.

It would be very cool if Verizon would update their entire line up to 2.2. That would definitely give Froyo a mayor push in install units.

Free concert to promote the Galaxy S (Vibrant) in Toronto, with mystery artist

http://mobilesyrup.com/2010/07/28/to-celebrate-the-galaxy-s-launch-samsungs-holding-a-toronto-street-concert-august-4th/#comment-60851

Looks like the the Galaxy S is looking to make a big impact. Samsung Canada just sent out a press release stating that “Front Street will transform from a commuter-clogged thoroughfare into a rocking concert venue on August 4th when Samsung Mobile celebrates the launch of its premium Galaxy S smartphone with an ultimate impromptu street concert featuring one of Canada’s hottest bands. Toronto music and mobile technology lovers can expect an unforgettable experience that’s sure to rock the city core.”

What: Street concert event
When: August 4, 2010 Show starts at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Union Station – Union Square Plaza, 65 Front Street West
Who: It’s a secret! Here’s a clue: They’re in the prime of your youth

(The Bell Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant is launching on the 6th of August)

My guess is Metric.

I hope Rogers gets the Galaxy S soon. I want the Motorola Milestone as well, but don't want to have to go with the evils of Bell.

Who am I kidding. As a Telus subscriber looking to switch for Android phones, I really can't tell who to go with. I just want a great phone, but none of our providers really carry any good ones that I can see as of right now.

EDIT: Rogers gets the Galaxy S in September.

Soultron, take me to the Metric concert :3.

Also, I am SO tempted to wait longer for the Rogers version, but I can't! I keep waiting for newer phones, and this is the first Android phone we're getting that holds up to all Android phones currently released globally. It's my one and only chance!

Hollerado. Do it, Rogers.

EDIT: I feel your pain, Kinitari. I keep waiting for something good to happen to us with a phone like the Galaxy S, then America gets something like the Droid X and then I want to sit and wait it out even longer for the better phone to arrive here.

Yeah =/. But the Galaxy S is where I am finally jumping in, if I go to this concert and am thoroughly impressed by Metric, I will take it as a sign and take the plunge.

Not nearly as well known as Metric, but I think there more of a fun band to listen to.

Hollerado -- "Juliette" (might've heard it on The Edge if you're a radio-goer.)

Hollerado -- "Americanarama"

I'm going to jump in with the Galaxy S too, but in September with Rogers.

Got an awesome customer service rep talking to AT&T today. She got me a supervisor override for an early upgrade to a Captivate. Need to look through some finances, but nevertheless really good experience. Almost makes me happy to deal with the rest of AT&T's bullshit.

Wow just getting in this thread. But at the beginning of summer I bought a HTC Droid Eris and I am completely in love with it. The customization and ease of the phone are amazing. But just recently they have been coming with updates that make the phone slower.. wtf.. but man I'll hold on for a good one, and just bite my tongue for the time being.

Just picked up a captivate today, upgraded from a 3GS. Android has so many more customization options I almost dont even know where to start. Swype keyboard is pretty great though, I must say. I was a little worried about reading about the buggy gps and lag but so far my gps has been perfect and no lag yet. Keeping my fingers crossed it continues that way.

had it since it first came out. works great on DX except for some sound issues. choppy to looping (irritating bass sound)
u should check out the software thread...

Freyjadour said:

Got it working. If you mess up creating your image you get a black screen or crash back to the ROM list - not particularly user friendly. I've also had a couple of mid-game crashes. Only tried with a couple of games, but it runs perfectly well for me on a 2.1 Desire - hopefully 2.2 should make it even better.

DaFish said:
is the Droid 2 supposed to be any thinner?

edit: not saying the Droid one is thick or anything...
I don't think it's suppose to be, just updated internal hardware and better keyboard.

Freyjadour said:

It seems it doesn't run all that well on Galaxy S. Maybe optimized for snapdragon processors? I've only tried FFT and Chrono Cross. The emulation was okay, but they were both laggy.

Might get the Captivate here in next few days. Anything I should know or is there a new phone coming out soon to wait for? AT&T only here.

Looking at the android market, it looks pretty cool. Ive never had a smart phone and a data plan before :lol
