NooooOooOooOoo!!!

My cats chewed through my brand new stock Samsung headset! I had never head an in-ear headset that was THAT good. Treeees sad. It was my fault for leaving them on the coffee table overnight I guess, cats get crazy overnight :(.

Now I need to figure out what to do for a replacement, special order (which will probably be expensive as all hell) or utilize a combination of my staff discount and pity to get a good deal on some other branded headsets.

Can anyone recommend anything good? I really liked these in-ears, astounded by it's sound isolation/cancellation (pretty much on par for me with expensive over the ears I've purchased in the past).

The headset is $29.95 from Bell.

The desire is an amzing phone. The only issue is there isn't an unlock at the moment to get it working on rogers or bell. So far it's just an amazing mini computer.

I'm proud of you, desire/galaxy s fo lyfe... Swype doesn't like it when I use slang.
The story of the Desire is almost as stupid as the Legend's. I get the idea that if I buy a Desire I could sell my iPod Touch, which world bring the cost of the phone down to the point where it would end up cheaper than the Legend. Well everyone was sold out of the Desire, too... or at least that's what they tell me over the phone.

I decide to go to Best Buy anyways and check out some Blue-rays. On my way out I stop by their phone section and ask if they have any Desires. After he checks the computer it turns out they actually DID have them, an entire drawer full of them.

So yeah, I picked one up and will probably choose a plan in the next dart or two. So far, after writing out this post with it, I can safely say that keyboard input and text editing (copy, paste, selection) is easily my least favourite thing about it. Downright bad, even.

What? I love the Desire on screen keyboard - HTC have done a great job. And I'm on portrait 99% of the time.

Might be a thing to just get to used to - moving from iTouch etc?

Yeah, the iPod Touch has been my around the house/on the go portable device for the past year or so. My main gripe is text selection and copying. Like, I noticed a typo on a line above so I held my finger on the screen expecting something to select text or move the cursor, but all I get is a menu asking me if I want to select all the text or copy the text. What text? I haven't selected anything yet. I thought HTC had a magnifying glass thing similar to iOS?

Get launcher pro and see if swype is anywhere on there, I'm swyping on a bumpy bus ride as we speak....type....swype

Oh, and apparently I can't disable HTC Sense and get the stock Android launcher?
Google 'disable desire sense' and u should find videos showing how to disable sense launcher. You can't completely remove sense though as it is more than just a launcher, there is also messaging, contacts etc. You wont get a stock android experience until people are producing custom roms.

And yeah, text input on android isn't the best (I miss the accuracy of a resistive screen). Correcting mistakes can be a pain. Just make sure you have the spell prediction/helper on!

there are a few stock roms here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=628

I was using Defrost 2.4 until recently, then switched to OpenDesire 3.0.5 as it seemed more stable and updated more frequently (already has 720p video recording at 19fps - none of the other stock roms for desire do yet, i think)

Also if you guys haven't tried it already, check out swift keyboard (replacement keyboard in the market) .. works great

Yeah, i'm thinking of switching over to CyanogenMod 6 once it becomes final. I've heard that HTC's Froyo update is going to bring 720p video recording to the Desire, though, so I hope they'll include it.

If you bought an unlocked phone then the 2.2 updated should already be available (well, it is in the uk, would've thought north American would have it too).

And thanks for the swiftkey recommendation, giving it a trial now. Like all the long press options. Pain in the butt having to go to that although screen all the time.

Samsung should be paying me goddamn, I'm going to get two of these phones (one for me and my female), but I also have my roommate considering getting a Galaxy S over an iPhone - a friend I hung out with yesterday a Galaxy S over the new blackberry, and one of the mobile girls I work with a Desire or a Galaxy S over a blackberry.

I think what does it more than anything else though is the screen, everyone is drawn in by the screen, I even have a widget just for changing the brightness (well it also turns on and off wifi and stuff) because I have to put it to max so often.

Now I just wanna see if there is a way I can change the 'swipe to unlock' screen.

Just go into settings, location and security and enable the screen unlock pattern. You will have to do your own unlock pattern when you want to use the phone, but at least you won't be accidentally unlocking it (I find the samsung stock lock screen far to easy to unlock) and it provides a layer of security on your phone (handy if you live in fear of being raped on various social networks). Enable 'use visible pattern' as well, lets you see what you're doing when you are trying to unlock it.

There are 3rd party apps that allow you to change the lock screen, but last time I read up on them it seemed that it disabled the alarm on the phone.

Yeah, although the dedicated thread has a much more active community of Nookers. This thread would really only be good for the softroot/dev stuff.

Well to be honest, softroot/dev stuff is a large reason I'm interested in it :p

Use the 'trackball' to go back and forth letters.

And yeah, I have 2.2 on Desire - it's 720p recording, WiFi tether, new widgets and apps too. Full list of changes: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741491

Try swiping the very top of the screen from left to right and back :)

So, as many Galaxy S owners will know, the handset is prone to lagging/stalling once you start installing plenty of apps on your device. This can be quite annoying as given the hardware inside this bad boy, it really shouldn't be happening. The reason is that Samsung are using an RFS file system for their system/app partition which is really bogging things down.

Quite a few fixes have been found which involve mounting an EXT partition onto your SD card and using that. This has been found to greatly increase performance of the phone.

Some guy over at XDA has found another fix, which involves taking a chunk of the 2gb nand and running a virtual EXT2 file system inside of it, which is giving him this sort of performance;

http://a.imageshack.us/img32/7803/201008060404passedreboo.png

Quadrant score = 2234

edit: "Benchmark filesystem total score: ~260. Was 25-50 on RFS."

That's on a 2.1 based kernel, not Froyo. No JIT improvements here. Although the consensus seems to be that using a EXT2 system is not safe enough for daily use on a mobile phone, so don't expect Samsung to come out with this sort of improvement in their next firmware. Although it should be pointed out that the safer fix (google for mimocan/galaxy s) uses EXT4 and that produces Quadrant scores around 1700.

If Samsung get their shit together with their future firmware, then its good times ahead for the good ship Galaxy S/Captivate/Vibrant.

Course this is Samsung we are dealing with, so that's a big IF

That's cool and all, but I suck at it :(.

Thanks for the info! I haven't noticed the lag yet, but I'll take your word for it - it was obvious that Samsung's UI has some problems after I swapped it for launcher pro.

What gets me is, why do I have so little free ram? I have maybe two running apps, and I only get like 50-70mb free at any time.

Edit: Just did a proper reset of the phone and now I am back up to 170mb, much better I guess.

Android as of 2.1 can only address up to 256mb of system memory, 2.2 brings HIMEM support and the os will use up to 512mb. Now some people say that HIMEM is already enabled on the SGS, others say it is not, so at the moment its a little unclear.

I know that on my SGS Quadrant reports my Total memory as 326mb, and lists about 130~mb as 'inactive'. Whether that's because the os is not adressing this memory or its set aside for something else (gpu) is unknown. I've searched XDA/Modaco forums but no-one seems to have a conclusive answer!

Ah, well hopefully 2.2 is released soon, that should clear some stuff up!

Gah, I've tried two different wired headsets with my Galaxy S, they don't work. Well they work, but not properly. I guess I need to go special order the stock kind.

That's awesome work but it's just so funny how Samsung is so consistent. I want to like them, we all love their hardware but they ALWAYS manage to fuck it up for themselves.

Did you try from Bell? Its 29.95.

Yep, they've put together a smartphone with some of the best components available, and then they've gone and shot themselves in the foot by seemingly duct-taping together some code from their other feature phones..... Derp.

Damn your avatar too, I can't resist the urge of scanning QR codes!! :lol

No I didn't go through bell, was just getting some random ones at the store I work at, now I'll have to go through bell =p but I wont be able to use my staff discount!

Set flash to on demand (you don't have to turn it off completely) if that's what's causing the problem.

The X10 is available on At&t if anyone is *snicker* interested:

1.6 am cry

was hoping they would be smart enough to release 2.1 in the US so existing x10 user outside US would get an upgrade shortly after :(

It's a decent phone nevertheless.

Its just about to launch in the US.
I'm surprised that we already have it in Canada, and have had it for several weeks now. Didn't seem all that special when I toyed with the demo unit at Bell. Responsive, but nothing amazing.

I seemed to missed the joke on the x10. Why is this phone drawing so much interest again?

Well, this was the phone I wanted to buy even before I knew the Nexus One existed.
The Nexus was release in January, that was close to 9 months ago. Imagine waiting that long to get the X10, and to top it off it has 1.6 installed?

Sony is really dropping the ball. I really like the hardware on the x10, and the UI skin is not bad looking. But too little too late.

SE dropped the ball from the day they introduced their first smartphone. They have a horrible software team that doesn't know shit about smartphone OSs. They're also very slow at fixing bugs and bad at support in general.

They already release several small updates that had improved the phone a bit. But x10 is still waiting for 2.1 when other phones are getting 2.2. :(

Some news about Verizone Android Plans:

  • * In addition to the Motorola DROID and Motorola DROID X, we’re told Motorola will launch a new DROID handset, the Motorola DROID Pro. It is supposed to have a 1.3GHz CPU, 4″ screen and global roaming capabilities. Estimated launch of November 2010
  • * Motorola is working with Verizon on a “slab form-factor” device that sort of looks like an old Motorola Q but features a full touchscreen and global roaming. It will run Android 2.2. Maybe this will be a lower cost, MOTOBLUR handset?
  • * There are a lot more Android invasions happening before the end of the year, we’re told. This includes a global Android device from both Samsung and HTC.
  • * Samsung is working on a 7″ screen Android tablet with front-facing camera. Motorola is also working on a tablet as well, except it will sport a 10″ screen, either 1GHz or 1.3GHz CPU, front-facing camera, and Android 3.0. Don’t expect the Motorola so soon though, as we’re informed that while the launch was supposed to happen in December, Android 3.0 will probably hold up the release of that device and we should expect it around February 2011.
  • * Verizon Wireless is aiming and on track to have at least 75% of the country covered in LTE coverage by April 2012
  • * There will be a Novatel LTE MiFi device available in January or February that will apparently support up to 10 simultaneous Wi-Fi users.
  • * Lastly, we’re told LTE data pricing will stick at $59.99/month, though it’s unclear what the data allowance will be. (This is for data cards, not smartphones)

Just curious about the Galaxy since it's equipped with dual cameras -- is there a facetime like application on it? Would be a huge selling point in me getting it over the iphone 4 since I'm in a long distance relationship and we'd both like something like facetime.

If so, I'll probably go to Bestbuy to pick one up :lol

Wow.

i was hoping we'd get some information on LTE phones for early 2011. I'm going to switch this winter to Verizon and would have held off a bit to jump into an LTE phone, but i guess i gotta wait.

IIRC Fring supports video chat. Skype has said they'll do something later this year (probably behind the curve due to the paucity of Android handsets with front-facing camreas). They've been doing it for PC w/ webcams for years too, it's not like this is new technology.

That's pretty awesome! I know I'm in the minority but I'm undecided - I don't know if I'd rather have something like Android powering my inevitable tablet purchase or a Windows 7 skin. A laptop/netbook in iPad's clothing is super tempting to me but I know not everyone sees it as I do (I would love to run true computer programs, from Chrome to Nook Study).

We'll see what happens.

The Sprint Epic 4G is the only one with a front cam out of the Galaxys in the US I believe. With it you can use apps like Qik or Fring (haven't heard of the Skype app having camchat but that's a possibility too) to videochat and it's not restricted to Wifi!
