I read reviews on a bunch of sites and they are all very positive. Most have preferred the Epic to the Evo.

It is also interesting to note that Engadget seems to be the only site that got a unit with a defective GPS. Hopefully that bodes well for GPS working out of the box.

I pre-ordered mine at Radio Shack and the 31st can't get here soon enough. I'll be so glad to say goodbye to my iPhone 3g.

Engadget left the aGPS setting off

The GPS works perfectly on the Epic

So I got myself a Samsung Galaxy S. Should arrive in 3-5 days. This will be my first Android phone. Actually, my first smart phone. Up until now aI've just been using crappy Nokia's and such.

Any tips?

1. Don't use a task killer.

Eh, that's about all I can think of. :P Have fun with your new phone, I'm sure you'll be blown away. :D

Install launcher pro
Hold down on a text entry field, enable swype. Have some fun!
Load Samsung apps, install clinging. This gives you speech to text keyboard.
Settings - sound & display. Disable default notification. Just enable sounds where u think you will need it, otherwise you'll have your phone beeping away to everything.
Install handcent sms. Default message app isn't the best.

Pro-tip: run your finger across the notification bar. This turns up/down the screen brightness. I tend to keep mine at minimum, I still find it more than enough.

Hope this helps, have fun!

"Menu->Modify" on home screen allows you to add/remove home panels (up to 7), you can swipe them down and back up to reorder them.

"Menu->Modify" on app screen to rearrange your apps (multiple pages allowed).

On the stock keyboard, long press on "123" to get to the cursor keyboard (for easy text select/copy/paste).

Extend battery life considerably for the desire and N1 apparently

Check out post 5 for good instructions (for the desire, at least, I believe they use the same battery)

And 800x480 seems kinda lame for a tablet...

Update:

Thanks to the firmware we have more technical details about the Galaxy TAB:

- Screen resolution 480x800.
Update xda-developers.com believes that 480x800 pixels is wrong. They pointed the resolution to 1024 x 600 pixels.

On the stock keyboard, long press on "123" to get to the cursor keyboard (for easy text select/copy/paste).

Mind blown..... do any other third party keyboards have this functionality? I've been using Vlingo.

I wonder if the Galaxy Tab firmware is an alpha version based off the Galaxy S (same specs after all, probably similar to the Galaxy S 'Touch' model as well). The resolution is probably something that got carried over, but is due to be updated before release. Otherwise that'd be a pretty poor resolution for a tablet.

swype has something similar, can't remember the shortcut though

I do use one and I have not heard of this, don't use one?

Well, supposedly the latest android kernels are well tuned between keeping stuff in memory and removing apps when memory is needed, but...

reasons for not using one :

- you may kill essential tasks or services leading to random FC
- if you are really "aggressive" and don't let any process sleep in memory, every time you do *anything* on the phone, it has to be reloaded -> you have a shitload of free memory and your phone feels sluggish, which kind of defeat the purpose

why you still need one:

- the supposed kernel settings are not so optimized after all and your phone slows down after a while. But you never know, you should definitely give it some time before you start using a task killer.

Appreciate all the information, thank you. Whenever I get the 2.2 update I will not use it.

If you download Spare Parts off Marketplace it'll give you access to Android's native task manager functions, and you can turn it to Aggressive in there. Saves having a third party app running if that's all you use it for.

(Spare Parts is pretty handy anyway, gives you access to a few hidden functions of the OS that are usually only accessible by some long-ass dial codes)

This didn't work. I'm on an N1 with stock 2.2, fwiw. I'm still getting the same crappy battery life as always.

I got a little excited when it charged a but extra after initially showing green, but the battery is still draining quickly. I am a power a user, for sure, but it still sucks how often I charge.

Interesting that the Epic is bigger than the Evo in every dimension, and weighs more as well. Couple that with its smaller screen, higher price, and (by me) unwanted keyboard, and the Evo wins by a landslide. It's nice to have choices, though.
.

Yeah I debated which to get for quite a while but eventually the Epic won. The large screen on the Evo is super nice but the issue with it being locked to 30 fps is very unappealing. Epic won me over with the much faster graphics performance and the physical keyboard.

I know the Epic is a beast already but I really would have liked it with a bigger screen. I compared a Captivate (which has the same 4" screen) to my iPhone 3g and the screens are the exact same width, the extra .5" inches only makes it taller (in portrait mode). That's kinda lame as a larger screen width has more impact on the perceived size than a larger height does (at least for me).

I don't know if this was posted. But G2 from T-mobile has been announced. First Android Smartphone to experience 4G Speed with their new HSPA+ Network.

I'm seriously considering the Galaxy S and this comparison has been helping:

I'm concerned about the wifi speed of the S though -- does Froyo address this, or is it a Samsung issue?
Probably more to do with Samsung than the os. I wouldn't be surprised if the lower upload speeds were more to do with samsung's crappy file system than the actual wifi (fix d for file system coming with froyo apparently).

random moan; why don't more android keyboards have cursor buttons...? Swiftkey, i'm looking at you.

a non rooting fix? As in when samsung releases froyo it will fix the file system? That would seal the deal for the wife's phone

Apparently. Someone over at XDA got in contact with an engineer at Samsung pointing them to the threads about mounting EXT2/3 partitions onto the NAND in the hope of giving them ideas, and he replied that they were also looking at the same thing (Well, probably not EXT2/3, but hopefully they will change the file system to something that doesn't bog down the i/o performance).

I live in hope, I don't really want to mess around with virtual partitions to get my phone running as it should.

God I hope so, I haven't rooted my phone (I tend to avoid that sort of thing for fear of fucking everything up) - but I am envious of the file management fixes I've seen. I hear Froyo is a September release for Galaxy S's.

We have 3 in our household, so we're all looking forward to it!

Samsung Launches Galaxy U

galaxy-u-ff.jpg

Samsung launched a new phone for LG U+ (LG Telecom in Korea) today, and it’s all about the U. As in, “‘Unique grip design, ‘Ultimate’ display, ‘Utilitarian’ apps and ‘Ubiquitous’ features like Wi-Fi,” as explained by Samsung’s Korean product page. It’s called the Samsung Galaxy U, model number SHW-M130L.

The device, which will sell for roughly $680 USD, features a 3.7″, 480 X 800 AMOLED+ display; 1GHz processor, 802.11b/g/n networking; 1500mAh battery; and a 5MP cam that captures video at 720p. It has 8GB of internal memory (plus microSD) and runs Android 2.1 at launch. It will be available in Mirror Black and Neutral White. Find more information over at Samsung’s Korean product page.

i havent rooted my android phone yet and the wife really wants a captivate... if they fix the GPS, file system and drop froyo it will be awesome

I'm pretty torn here...

Evo or Epic?

If the G2 is really that awesome and t-mob 3.5g network tests well I might switch (though i'd have to pay a etf to sprint).

I get a discount on t-mobile monthly access and whatever choice I make my phone is free, so the ETF isn't that huge a deal to me.

So were you just lying before when you said that your wife already had a captivate, or do your just have two wives?

she had a captivate from my work (we started offering androids and iphones for business uses, i used my personal n1 and gave her my tester), which changed her mind from the iphone, my 2nd line contract isn't up until December.

Two wives is too much money and too much work

Well if that is the case, then I wonder if she had it long enough to experience some if the issues my wife has:

-short battery life with long recharge times
-occasional lock ups that require restarts
-phone not ringing or registering certain calls (might be more network related)
-contact management issues related to fb integration. Btw, these issues are present even after you hide the fb contacts, because when you add to an existing contact, you see all the contacts you had previously hidden.

What's amusing is that, even with those issues, she still loves the heck out of that phone. That screen is simply jaw-dropping.

Would you guys recommend the Samsung Vibrant? I have T Mobile and don't really feel like switching providers. I'm gonna be leaving for college in about 2 weeks and want to get a new phone/plan. I've never had a smartphone, so I'm pretty excited about it. Plus, I found a great deal online: 90 bucks for the Vibrant, but it's actually free cause you get 90 bucks MIR. At the moment, my contract with T-Mo has expired, so I'm on month-to-month. I'd be paying 70 bucks a month for unlimited data and 500 mins, no texting. I hear there's an app in the Android market that allows you to send and receive free texts, so I was thinking of going for that.

My mom just got the Samsung Acclaim. She called me last night and left me a message letting me know she got the phone. The message was her for 10 seconds and 3 minutes of hearing her fumble with the phone. I called her back to talk to her to find out she couldn't figure out how to hang up the call. She's a little behind the times with technology.

i can tell you what issues she had when using it.

-She complained of the battery life, but she was coming from a dumb phone, after the initial "new toy" was over, her's lasted roughly the same as my n1, and would just charge overnight.

-no issue with the ringing/registering
-she didnt mention any hard locks
-she didnt use the GPS that much (she is a train commuter) so i dont think she experienced gps weirdness, although i would have to ask if she had weird location based issues inside

i'd have to ask on the fb integration issue, when we first turned it on i did the same thing as my phone which was just to sync with contacts. She loved the screen, features and the market had all the apps she wanted (a few local radio station streaming apps). There were times where it seemed a little jumpier/slower then my n1 but i chocked it up to the fs and she didnt really seem to notice or be bothered by it.

as a side note, i just got activesync at work pushing to personal n1. While they don't do any active administering of the smartphones (we offer iphones as well) its still jarring when the permissions come up and ask for full wipe access, call monitoring and email monitoring... while its nice to not have to carry 2 phones (bberry and personal), not sure how comfortable i am with that

Bell discontinuing the HTC Legend

d43ly.png

According to the screenshot we received it states that “due to ongoing supply constraints from the manufacturer, the HTC Legend for Bell is effective immediately being discontinued”. There’s no explanation on what the HTC supply constraints are but Bell goes on to say that those “clients who are interested in the HTC Legend should be redirected to Bell’s terrific line-up of Android smartphones”… so basically saying we don’t offer the Legend anymore, but do have the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant.

There are many things up in the air here… we’re not sure if Virgin Mobile HTC Legend will be affected by this. Ironically, Virgin just increased the price of the Legend from $79.99 to $99.99 on a 3-year. Plus there’s no word on what’s going to happen to current Bell Legend clients and future OS updates.

Feeling better about my Desire.

Ugh, after flashing a new rom onto my Galaxy S this morning I was busy restoring apps and also getting rid of some of the pre-installed ones through Titanium Backup, when some system lag and a few screen presses resulted in me deleting the Network Location service. Factory reset did nothing, so I had to go about flashing the firmware again, now reinstalling all my apps and data for the second time today.

Lesson: When you are using Titanium Backup to remove stuff, take your time!

ps. Any Orange UK Galaxy S owners around here? I need mobile internet settings. I've used the Orange site to get the settings but it doesn't seem to be working properly. Cheers.

Really? The only reviews I've read are the ones from Engadget, CNET, and Gizmodo. Engadget preferred the Evo, Gizmodo the Epic, and CNET didn't come down one way or another.

If there are a bunch of sites that compared the phones and preferred the Epic, I'd love to know what they are. I own an Evo but can swap it for an Epic within 30 days (which I, in fact, have pre-ordered just in case).
