Tempted to go for the Desire Z at Xmas for a new phone, seems my Hero has had enough.

Bottom 1cm of the touchscreen has stopped working over the last week, just there now the whole thing has stopped. Thank goodness it has a trackball.

edit - screen just went to sleep and I can't unlock it due to me having a passcode on it, great :(

Anyone pick up a Galaxy Tab yet? Impressions?

I guess it's starting to seem inadvisable to buy a Tab now when the Android 3.0 tablet device rumors are starting to pick up. But, playing around with a the Galaxy Tab in store, it seemed a solid enough performer, decent build quality, etc.

I think there's a Tab topic, search for it.

Is it assumed that the Tab won't be upgradeable to 3.0 for some reason?

I know there's a Tab topic, but it seemed to have died.

Samsung has said the Tab will get Honeycomb, but I'd rather not bank on that without even knowing what that release holds at this point. Also, since most other CE companies seem to be holding off on tablet releases until Honeycomb arrives, I'm wondering if they'll be better implemented overall.

I know : ( Wanted to grab one of the Archos ones, but due to delays I may end up waiting it out.

That seems.. excessive. Well who cares if it costs the same. ;p

no such thing... this is what we have been expecting for 1Q, nice to start seeing some confirmations. This basically invalidates any need for nexus s if it isn't dual core.

Eh you'd still need the os and the apps to leverage that extra power in a real way.

I dunno, if these other phones aren't going to be shipping with NFC chips onboard, the Nexus S may still have a leg up on them. NFC seems like it potentially expands the platform more than simply adding more raw processing power does right now.

true although i've seen this NFC movie before, and it bombed... i'd love to be proven wrong this time though. Not sure if it had the backing it has this time around though

build it and they will come :)
Eventually yes... Nobody will want to program for dual core while most of the phones on the market are still single core though. Alot depends on honeycomb IMO.

Multi core devices will immediately be able to find benefit from those cores. Since android/linux is already a multitasking OS, you would see a benefit without any changes in code.

It will be interesting to see how far Google is planning to go with Android. With the introduction of "intents", cloud communication/processing and now near field communication... it looks like Google is taking things very seriously.

the only thing that would really need to take advantage of the power would be games, and there are already tegra 2 exclusive games announced

They could try and fully GPU accelerate the 3.0 version of the OS.

Interesting long-term news

http://www.techeye.net/mobile/panasonic-turns-to-android-in-crowded-japanese-smartphone-market

Panasonic has announced it will release a smartphone in Japan’s increasingly crowded market in a bid to compete with Apple.

It was announced yesterday that rival Sharp would also release a smartphone aimed specifically at the Japanese market, and now electronics manufacturer Panasonic has followed suit with plans to release a device next year, before releasing in other regions in 2012 according to Reuters.

The move comes at a difficult period - with Apple, Samsung and Google's Android having already become firmly established. It prompted Osamu Waki, head of the company’s mobile communications unit, to tell a news conference that johnny-come-lately Panasonic may have erred in its decision to move so slowly into the booming market.

"We misjudged the speed at which smartphones would be taken up in the Japanese market. With the rapid shift to Android, we want to catch up quickly," Waki said.
Panasonic will base its devices on Google’s Android OS as it goes up against the iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S, and will emphasise network capabilities with other Panasonic products.

It is hoped that Panasonic will raise total mobile sales to 15 million units worldwide in 2015 from 5.5 million expected in Japan before March, and to achieve this it will be very important for the firm to grab a chunk of the smartphone market - sales of which have increased massively over the past year.

Panasonic pulled out of the overseas mobile phone markets in 2006 and now faces an uphill struggle to establish itself both at home and abroad.

Where it gets interesting in my mind is the potential for some serious A/V integration/automation.

Can anyone point me in the direction to learn about overclocking (how to, etc)? You can underclock a well to save battery as well, right?

they were supposed to with 2.3 but i think it hit some timing snags, i expect when the two trains of code (tablet and phone) merge again past 3.0 that its in there.

Am I the only one who dislikes the trend of the screen sizes. I always intended on buying an Android phone in the future once the OS becomes more polished and all that but does every single fucking good phone has to be 4 inches or higher. That's way too big for me. Fffffu.

after the nexus one i think a well designed phone around a 4" screen is very doable and almost perfect size... anything bigger is getting unwieldy for my use.

I think the perfect form factor is nexus 1/iphone ish. If you can make the screen as big as possible on that hardware then I don't care. I just hate the phones that are bigger to accommodate the bigger screen size.

My hands aren't that big at all so it all is just completely unappealing. And it seems like they are trying SOOO hard to make it the new touchscreen standard among high end phones.

All I know is my puny ass 3.2" Droid Eris makes me wish I had a 4+ incher.
That's what she said.

yeah i was suprised how a lot of the 4" screens aren't much bigger then the n1, so i'd definitely go for a 4" screen, but other then that, its pushing "pocket-ability" for me

Count me into the 4" crew as well, and I have small hands
4.3" just pushes my limit but I think 4 inches improves usability.

You need a bigger penis.

4.3 fits perfectly in my large masculine hands.

Normally I'd agree but my gf has said other wise. :-P

she's being polite :)

but yes, i think there is a huge difference between a 4.3 and a 4" screen in phone size... but hey, i thought this phone was huge until i started using it, so maybe i'd get used to a 4" and want the 4.3

Woah boy, no else see the news about the new Android tablet DSG (Currys, PC World etc.) will be stocking in time for christmas?

Android 2.2 (Froyo)
512MB RAM / 512MB ROM
Full size USB host
Mini HDMI out
Tegra 2 chipset (Dual 1ghz Cortex A9 + high end ES 2.0 graphics)
1024x600 10.1" capacitive touch
3300mah battery

All for £250!

More info here (with pictures and videos):

http://android.modaco.com/content/a...s-set-to-hit-the-dixons-group-stores-shortly/

As far as I'm concerned this blows away every other announced Android tablet. Seems there'll be models with HSDPA and GPS as well, not clear if they come with the stock £250 model.

Edit: Preview here:

This is supposed to be released this weekend. Any UK gaffers going to pick one up? I'm going to head down to my local Currys to see if they have it on show but they are pretty useless, they probably don't even know it exists. Seems like a pretty awesome tablet but no 3G is a bit disappointing. Still, hard to argue with £250.

I went to my pc world/currys megastore a few weeks ago, they had the POS stuff ready for them and the holders in place, but sadly not demo units to show.

Will definitely be playing around with them as soon as it comes in, it'll make the samsung tabs price tag even more of a joke. But can I justify £250 for one..... hmmm...

I think the Droid Pro is going to be in stores tomorrow. I know you guys don't particularly care but have you run across any impressions or reviews of the device yet? Been some pretty impressive benchmarks of the stock handset.

Good luck with that. If you want to see some quality meltdowns, check forum.archosfans.com.

I want the product so bad, but seriously, 2 months delay?

I've only seen impressions from BGR, not much else. And their initial impressions were fairly superficial: complained about screen res, but liked KB, that's about it.

I want this chip to be true! Where is it?!

Dude was on some serious crack to actually believe that. I don't actually think there are any phones (smart or otherwise) which run on an Intel platform.

The story was picked up by a lot of news outlets and blogs. Come on Intel, where's the BEEF?!
