Android, iOS, WP8 phone debate thread

AFAIK you needed to install iTunes at least once to get CopyTrans to actually work with your device.. Unless they recently changed that requirement.
The PC is just used it with doesn't have an installation of iTunes so I guess it doesn't require it.

Isn't OLED more efficient than LCD?

I really do wish they would have switched. :(

You can spin it that way, but in real world situations with real apps and GUIs, no it isn't.

The darker nature of ICS and JBs interface helps a lot, but most of the time you are dealing with lighter colors that drain the battery much faster.

I still prefer OLED anyway, for the contrast pop thanks to better than kuro level blacks (at least on the galaxy s/s2).

I honestly don't get this defeatist attitude Apple fans display when it comes to smartphone innovation. Look at all the stuff Nokia packed into the 920. Sure, some of it is gimmicky, but most of it is genuinely useful and I refuse to believe that you wouldn't want any of it in your phone.

The way it is now, the iPhone is your typical annual franchise update. Wholly unexciting, more Madden than RDR.

Maybe not everyone needs and/or wants the things that the Lumia has to the point in which they will ditch iOS/iPhone?

Different people wanting different things... go figure.

To those going on about the S3's "Gimmicky" features, those features are exactly why I'm still using the official software. They're gimmicky to people who've never used them, and useful to those that have.

So no one who HAS used them wouldn't find them to be gimmicky?

yeah, the gnex and many older devices have bad battery life on LTE , despite good Wifi and 3G battery life. newer devices with newer LTE radios are doing much better.

gnex on verizon unlimited here
Shieeeet, same here I almost never use LTE while I'm outside

and when I do I bring the damn charger with me.

I'm planning to get a verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or another Nexus phone with a 5"+ screen and just buy it off contract and pair it with my existing unlimited contract ( I can still do that and keep unlimited right ?

hopefully they have better battery life on LTE than my gnex it's embarrassing.
love the phone to death but the LTE battery life is lacking hardcore.

Eh, I'd also argue that most people don't really know what they want until they have had it.

OLEDs across the board produce awesome black levels.

An OLED with a proper RGB structure looks best (Vita) versus the pentile matrix used in so many Samsung phones. Bleh.

On the money.

They'll ditch the iPhone when the new Iphone gets those same things.

I was totally on the OLED train until I saw Samsung phones. Then I cried myself to sleep thinking I had been lied to about OLED, because I think their displays (from the phew that I've seen) have been TERRIBLE.

Vita redeemed the technology.

I don't believe you
The OLED displays Samsung typically puts in their phones really don't look all that great. The black level performance remains excellent but the sub-pixel structure inherent in a pentile matrix really looks ugly when you're used to a traditional layout. Also, Samsung phones have notoriously cranked up image saturation, among other things, leaving you with an overly contrasty image with edge artifacts everywhere.

For a display snob it's really not a pretty sight.

I'm eager to get rid of LCD technology altogether, however, so it's disappointing when this sort of thing happens.

Android > iOS > WP7.

Simple as that. Next question.

I need to play with WinPho8, but it looks really nice. So to me:

WP8 = iOS > Android

But I don't know about jumping into WP8 yet. Partially because I've never used a WP7 or 8 phone, and partially because the app situation isn't where I need it to be. And yes, I buy phones like I buy computers: based on the 3rd party software I need and want to use to enhance my experience beyond the default apps.

No I meant about him crying himself to sleep

Then your order is completely messed up.

Edit: edited for harshness

Current screens on iPhone's etc aren't a pretty sight either though. Awful contrast and black levels that look garish instead of punchy.

I'd also argue that pentile is a non issue (at least on the S3). You literally cannot notice it unless you have your face a few inches from the screen, which lets face it, you'd never do. Add to that, there's enough display options built in that over-saturation is not an issue. I use Natural mode which imo is very good, though Movie mode is even more subdued. I'll agree that Normal and especially Dynamic are heavily over done.

But at this point, no mobile screen technology is knock out. They all have their pluses and flaws, and I say this as a display snob myself.

Did you really like the S3 display over the One X? I remember at one time you were considering both I think. Or maybe that was someone else. Im a real sucker for OLED black levels and crazy contrast, but goddamn that LCD2 tech on the OneX is just gorgeous, and with the way they laminated it to the glass. Image almost appears to float on top of the display. IMO its the best display on the market right now until I get my hands on a 920 and an iP5 to compare.

I wouldn't go as far as to say I prefer the S3's screen. One X's takes it with colour accuracy, general smoothness, shadow detail and colour accuracy, but the S3's has a bit more punch (contrast) and better black level depth. So it's sort of hit and miss for both.

I heard a user in the Android community is making a fix to improve colours/shadow detail (above the current settings on offer) for the S3, so it will be interesting to see how it fairs against the One X after that.

Lol my Gnex literally lasts around 2-3 hours with mild use. Got the official extended battery and it still blows. I'm really hoping the iPhone lives up to those numbers.

I find this very hard to believe, unless your phone is seriously defective. My GSM Gnex with the stock battery easily went 12-14 hrs with moderate use. With the extended battery it went close to 20 hrs.

My S3 so far has been 13-15 with moderate use.

This was my gnex, with over 2 hrs screen time.

Wish they'd announce a bloody release date before they go to war with other handsets.

Even though I don't like these aggressive ad campaigns where you trash the competition, I think it's a smart strategy for Nokia (and Samsung previously).

By doing these comparisons, you're engraining your product in the minds of consumers as (one of) the only true rivals to the iPhone. Samsung did it with the Galaxy phones, and perhaps Nokia will find some success pitting their 920 directy against the other two.

Nokia Drive is basically the greatest turn by turn navigation package ever. But that's kind of expected when you own Navteq.

It's quite probably the only aspect where Windows Phone trounces the competition. Nokia Maps and Drive are the shit.
