it happens! i remember there was someone ... i think in the previous Android thread ... who wanted to know how to share their contacts with exchange but without using a Google account... or something like that...

Well to be fair half of the carriers in China block access to google servers. You can not bring an International phone to China and expect to use it seamlessly.

no, the person basically said they didn't trust Google with their information and we were like "well, you did you get an Android phone?"

I completely get that, and see my post here to understand that I agree with you on the app story: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=42394699&postcount=9888

Not to mention the fact that my 2-year-old Samsung Focus is still 100% compatible with literally every single one of the 100,000+ apps on the marketplace. No matter how old my phone is, there is absolutely 0 fragmentation in what I can run, and what my phone can do. Same goes with literally every other Windows Phone on the market.

What about the Nokia exclusive apps? Isn't ESPN mobile exclusive to Nokia devices?

you're really asking what i use Internet Relay Chat to do? well, i can 100% assure you it's for the purposes of Chat. i've been using IRC since 1996, and some of the people i know who use it have been using it before me.
Fair enough. I was into the scene a long time ago but haven't used it in nearly a decade.

I knew it was still active but I couldn't imagine wanting actually use it on a touch screen device.

daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!

well, i DO have a slide out QWERTY keyboard on my current device. though, i soon will have to deal with an all touchscreen device...

No kidding, everyone is suddenly a pro photographer. I hardly ever use the camera on my smart phone, works great but if I want real pics I bring a real camera (DSLR with a real lens).

I barely use my camera, and yet I still want the camera on my phone to be as fantastic as possible just for that 1% of the time when I'm snapping stills or video. I don't even care if that is rational or not, I just want it.

There is no fucking way in hell. Jesus Christ they are some weird guys.

I think it's fair to consider business-driven exclusives as a separate issue than technical incompatibility because of a lack of OS updates.

As a smartphone user, I think not being able to use an app for reason A is no better than not being able to use an app for reason B. I used Windows Phone 7 for a while to try it out, and I really do hope Windows 8 becomes a viable 3rd competitor so we see more developers bring out their apps along side their iOS and Android counter parts. I went back to Android, but I'm open to going back to Windows Phone 8 depending on how the app environment looks.

So I actually held an iPhone 5 today. My first thought was holy crap it's light. It feels hollow. Doe not not feel like any other iPhone before which always had some heft and a solid feeling. Other than that. Meh. iOS is just so dated now. The black looks nice though, could see some scuffs on it already though. :/

I just deleted my Google Account! Feels good to be out of their system for now. Not that microsoft and facebook are any better, but one less data-kraken to deal with

I agree, but the reason why it makes a difference here is because you're talking about an order of magnitude difference in the problem here.

On one hand you have a small selection of exclusive apps that are explicitly labeled as being exclusive for a single phone manufacturer.

On the other hand you have an unknown number of apps with a tremendously unknown number of incompatibilities varying wildly from device to device and app to app.

hey, does anyone know how to pronounce 'ATIV'? it's important, i could win a dollar. gonna need a link also.

if we actually knew about the OS, there wouldn't be a big question about it. ask that question again after they unveil it.

Let me rephrase to focus on things we do know.

What specifically do you think is missing from Windows Phone 7.5 that we haven't already heard is going to be included in 8? Especially directly comparing it to iOS, for example?

how about i directly compare it to Windows Mobile 6?

Multitasking so i can IRC properly.

support for running applications on removable storage.

And what is your blazing fast Dual Core A6 is used for? Load the grids on your homescreen faster? Given how much Apple's hardware is improving time over time, it's a disgrace that the software doesn't benefit from the hardware, at all.

What I mean is that the extra quad-core power in the Galaxy SIII enables you to go into Picture-in-Picture mode and watch a video and multitask.

You can do this with youtube videos too?

I really wanted to make the leap to Android, but I realised how easy some things in iOS actually are

Is there a Photostream alternative for Android?

There's SugarSync. I don't know exactly how close it is, but here's a part of the description that makes me think it's similar:

In addition, the app is perfect for photo and video backup and sync. Just take a photo using your device’s camera. Period. Behind the scenes, SugarSync will detect the new photo, back it up to the Cloud, and sync it to your computers. No thinking, wires, or emails to yourself. It just works. This feature also works great for automatic file and folder sync.

I personally use Google+. It will instantly (or only when I plug into an outlet like I do) upload any new pictures taken with your camera and upload them to a private section in Google+.

Well there's quite a few cloud options like dropbox, or even Google+'s photo features would work.

See the benefit of Photostream it's automatic. You don't do anything other than being on wifi. Dropbox I presume you need to manually upload?

Also lol, I'm not going to use a public social network for my photos!

Adding to Photostream are things like find my iPhone (for free) and iMessage alternatives

No you can set Dropbox to upload photos automatically. Same with Google+.

Nobody will see your pictures or videos on Google+ unless you set each one to.

In terms of Find my iPhone, I assume that's similar to the Where's my Droid app that's been out a few years. I don't know if there's a great alternative to iMessage, but there's WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, etc.

Like people have said, they all have auto upload.

Google+ isn't just a social networking thing. I have very little use for those, but I find it's photo album feature to be very useful in collecting my albums and sharing them with people of my choosing (not through G+, but through external links that it provides). Plus the way it links to events now is really nice.

Dropbox, Google+, Box and many others have automatic upload.

Box recently unveiled a desktop app too, Box Sync

iMessage alternatives? well, there's Google Voice if you're in the US.

edit: oh yeah, gotta mention the one downside of Google+ photo sync. it resizes photos to 2048 pixels on the largest edge.

also SeekDroid, Lookout and Plan B, among others.

Re. iMessage: http://mightytext.net/ -- Dunno how well it compares but it does work.

plus there's AirDroid, DeskSMS, TabletTalk, etc... and Samsung's own Kies Air, but i believe that only works on TouchWiz devices.

I love airdroid. Its nice not having to plug a usb cable into my phone when I want to copy something from desktop to PC. Just open the address in a browser tab and drag and drop stuff into the chrome window and it shoots it all over WiFi or some shit. I dont even know or care how it works, I just love that it does. Once all these phones get wireless charge pads we will be all done with wires.

Thanks for the info

Really didn't know that Dropbox does automatic uploads

I'm in the UK so GV doesn't work unfortunately. So I might go back to Whatsapp since most if my friends are on iMessage now

But I'll look into those. The one thing iOS does that the competitors haven't been able to do, is roll it into a 1st party solution.

But cheers for the info, was informative
