What about a Samsung Intercept? I can grab one on Virgin Mobile. Is that any good?

Man, options for a no-contract Android phone are limited...

Can someone recommend me a reliable voice recording app? I'd prefer free but please let me know of paid ones, too.

I need it so please respond.

I use recordroid casually, not sure if it's up to snuff for any standards you may have.

It's free, so can't hurt to try.

I don't use a dedicated app for that, I use SpringPad instead, a note-taking app that will also capture photos and record audio. It has a widget to make it fairly easy to start a recording from a home screen too.

I think the Evernote app on Android also captures audio now too, doesn't it?

Thanks all. I have a mock deposition to take and I don't want to buy an actual recorder. Here's hoping it works :lol

If anyone has more experience, please post away. I have a few hours until needing it.

Hmm looks like it is gone. It's not showing up when I look for it on the google app store either.

According to Engadget, the game was pulled for now due to stress on their multiplayer servers.

I really want to try out this game, just moved from an iPod Touch to a Droid X, and the game scene feels pretty barren on Android.

I'm worried about battery though. If I play Angry Birds for ~1 hour during a day, I pretty much definitely have recharge to get through the rest of the day. I can only imagine what a 3D game would do.

Maybe I'll have to get the Droid X extended battery.

Is there any way to have the camera roll from your phone's camera sync with your Picasa account?

for that matter... what do you guys do for syncing photos? I love that the Gallery app syncs with anything I put up on Picasa, so I started using Picasa this past weekend.

I already have a Flickr account, maybe I should use that?

Had to pick up a new phone cuz my G1 crapped out on me. Got the G2, what are some apps that are must haves? also, should i be doing anything to have my phone be in top form. I read they put alot of apps that can not be deleted??? and apparently there is supposed to be 4gigs of internal memory, and right now i have 1.5 just right out of the package? does everything that comes with the phone really take up that much space?

Yeah there's a lot of shit in there, though the idea that the bloat takes up 2.5 gigs is rather preposterous since I've restored all of my old apps from my old phone over and those take up about all of 300-400 megs.

The guys over at XDA are working on a perm root but for now they have a one-touch temp root called visionary that you can pick up on the market. Until then, you're stuck with the bloatware that they've stuck on there.

I think the problem with the G2 is that it came with 2 GB installed, rather than the advertised 4GB.

AHH! that sucks. I like the phone, but i felt very rushed to getting a new one. I don't like to do that before I research a product first. I wanted to wait for my contract to be up in 3 months, and switch to verizon to get a droid incredible. But i had to renew for two years on tmobile to get this g2 dammit.

I've axed this before and never really got a satisfactory answer. What is the best podcast downloading/playing software for android? Podkast is fresh donkey shit, and I have no fuckin idea how to find podcasts with Google Listen. I think I heard of one a while ago that cost like 5 bucks but was supposedly really good.

I think listen is the best. What I do to subscribe is use a computer to add a podcast rss to my rss feed (it will create a "listen" folder in your subs), then Listen will list the subs when it syncs. One big problem with the program is that it will often mess up if you are listening while downloading...

You're probably thinking of Doggcatcher. I bought it and am satisfied with the price since it's one of my most-used apps. Nice UI, frequently updated, and very full-featured.

Hey all, having a problem with contacts in my phone.

I have my dad in my phone, and he shows up when you hit the phone icon and go to contacts (he is also in my favorites), but when I actually go into my contact book (via the app drawer) he doesn't show up at all.

He also doesn't show in voice searches (like if I say "call Dad").

Anyone know why this may be?

That's strange. The contact app icon should take you directly to the same contact tab that you're viewing from your phone icon. Do you have any 3rd party contact apps installed?

maybe go into contacts > menu > display options to make sure nothing is disabled. Also, check to make sure your dad is stored as a google contact, rather than on your phone.

I've had a lot of problems with contacts but my problems seem to have disappeared as soon as I got rid of Sense and switched to a vanilla Android ROM. Are you using Sense, perhaps?

Has anyone tried Springpad? Can it be used as a To-Do kind of thing? I've been looking for a To-Do list app that can be synced over the web.
It can be used as a To-Do app, but it's not really well-organized for it. It's got most of the basic task management features but you have to dig a bit to get to everything and the tasks you set can get lost amongst other notes you may create in Springpad, unless you filter on tasks only or use SP for nothing other than task management.

There's also no option that I'm aware of right now that will take Springpad tasks and put them on a calendar, so it's hard to see tasks with due dates on an overall daily agenda if
you set due dates.

Overall, I like Springpad as a note-taking tool, but it's Task management features leave a bit to be desired.

It has 4GB, but a ton of it is reserved. See this for a more detailed explanation from T-Mo.

Part numbers from an owner's breakdown of his G2. Photos of the chip are in the first post of that thread.
oops, sorry. Misunderstood what I was told.

Hmm, I believe most of mine are phone contacts, not Google ones, as is he.

The one thing I have had issues with is contacts, it is a bit more complicated than it should be. How do I make sure everyone is a Google contact? What if they aren't on Google at all?

I just added all my old contacts from my old phone by hand, some of them (parents, grandparents) don't have Google accounts.

EDIT: Just found all of them in Gmail on my PC, my dad wasn't in there. I'll add him.

It's pretty good. But man, does it really hog down the CPU sometimes.

You're not alone. People are still having heated arguments about whether the phone does or does not have 4GB of memory. The chip photos are pretty decisive, imo, but I agree with people who say that T-Mo reserving ~50% of memory for their own (nefarious :lol) purposes is extremely annoying.

I think you're misunderstanding the concept of a Google contact. A Google contact is just any contact that is stored on Google's servers and is synced to your phone. They don't have to have a Google account to be one of your Google contacts. Personally, I don't see any reason to have Phone contacts. Google all the way, baby. :D

Do you have a phone with Sense? Serious question because I was having the same problem as you. I would add a contact and sometimes I could find them but they would not consistently save any changes I made. Sometimes they would work and other times not. This included adding contacts, changing names and choosing what groups the contacts were in.

Alright, so I want to install a gameboy emulator, but I've heard they are tricky to get working. Does anyone here know how to set it up?

So I'm about to play Angry Birds and a video loads up and plays before the game starts. I'm thinking wow I guess they figured out a way to do video commercials while playing games... thats kind of cool. But then the video plays again like 4-5 minutes into my gaming session. wtfisthisshit.gif

If you mean the one that is done by the developer who also makes the snes and genesis emulators, I would assume that there isn't really any set up.

Anyway

Anyone here try out this? Aro: http://www.aro.com/

I was thinking of signing up for the beta, but I'm not exactly sure about what it does.

that's strange, i haven't seen any videos in angry birds other than the cutscenes

I've come to the conclusion that Google needs to buy Doubletwist, update the desktop media player portion of it, and use it as a spearhead for their music service. (As well as being the place people can get their apps for their phones via desktop.) Then quickly update / speed up the Android Doubletwist app / media player, make it the default music player and they have killed quite a few birds with one stone.

Yeah...me either. In fact I haven't seen even one ad of any type in angry birds.

That's weird. Are you in the U.S.? And you downloaded from the official Market? I don't see videos either, but I do get small ads in the bottom right corner at the start of each stage.

They really need to do something. Of course Apple has had YEARS to fine tune and perfect their music capabilities between iTunes and iPhone, but really, music is the one thing that's clearly easier/nicer on iOS compared to Android. I myself use DoubleTwist, and I agree, that would be a nice acquisition.

Regardless, I want to hear more about Google's plans for streaming music from the cloud w/ Gingerbread. I can only fit about half my music collection on my 16GB card, and I'm holding off on buying a 32GB card with the hopes that we'll see some music streaming w/ Android 3.0.

I just bought one of these. The biggest drawback is that the screen is pretty low resolution compared to newer phones, but it's still completely usable for web browsing, etc. The CPU seems to be pretty quick and coverage is good (at least here in Pittsburgh using Virgin). I like the keyboard, but it might be a little small if you've got stubby fingers. That said, I'm happy with it so far. I was streaming Pandora over it last night and it was working fine. I've also used VNC on it and it was usable, so no complaints over the slower radio on the phone here. It appears to be pretty easily rootable as well, which will be my next project. This is my first smart phone though, my previous phone had a black and white screen so just about any phone would have been an upgrade. :)

If you have any specific questions about it, I'd be happy to try and answer them.

Hey, quick question. I'm working with a Samsung Vibrant for a client and we're trying to move some email out of the trash that he accidentally stuck in there.

For some reason I can't find how to do that. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Galaxy S owners should seriously download NoLED widget. It's bloody awesome! It's a notification widget that illuminates an LED shape (envelope, phone) on your screen if you missed a call or got a text, and some other stuff like emails, etc. It's free too.

So I just got my Captivate today and after installing 4 apps it started not downloading apps anymore so i uninstalled the updates form marketplace but now markletplace no longer shows under manage applications and I am still unable to download new apps.... any help?

It is quite handy.

I don't think it's you. The market place is having issues right now. I can't download anything right now either.
