Just got notification of an available update on my Desire - 90 MB download, so I'll grab it when I get home. Update description says it's Android 2.2 and Sense upgrades...

Nice.. i'm wondering if I should ditch custom roms and just jump back to stock sense..

I think I like having stock android too much :/

Well, another month to wait until I receive it from my T-mobile overlords.

What about the 3 mobile overlords? Also, how the hell can an update include 720p video recording? I would of thought this is a hardware issue.

I believe the hardware was capable, but they hadn't made the software driver yet for 720p .. i don't understand why exactly they chose to wait this long..

Just a note on Android 2.2 for the HTC Desire. The following responses are from the big networks in the UK:

Vodafone : "Weeks rather than months", mid August is likely
O2 : "Several weeks", late August
T-Mobile : "September"

I was going to get the Desire when 2.2 was released, but I'll wait until October to see if the Desire HD makes an appearance.

If you do jump back to stock Android, just wait till someone puts out a rooted version of the OTA or the stock ROM. Don't do the OTA, or you'll lose root.

Is there a way of unbranding my phone so I can get the 2.2 upgrade? I'm not fussed about root, I'd just prefer to have 2.2 now rather than September. And I'm not sure T-Mobile adds anything to it except a menu I never use and a bootscreen.

Got my upgrade installed. Haven't had a chance to play around with it, but the process was mostly smooth going, except for the fact that it required 25MB of free space on the phone storage, and I had to delete several apps to make that happen. :D

I have had 2.2 on my Desire for a few hours.
apps are more responsive.
Flash works really well, can now watch Colber Repor and porn.
Hard to say if web pages load faster because i was satisfied with the speed before.
720p recording is good for those moments you want to film some crazy person, but don't expect anything on the way of quality from a phone camera.

The thing i really wish for was that every app could be moved to the SDcard :(
Make Google Earth movable!!! it is a fucking memory hog.

2.2 is nice but nothing I feel that I needed.

I've had Froyo for the last few hours also as I just found out that Three sent me an unlocked, unbranded phone.:D

720p video is a real improvement (as long as you can hold the phone still enough). It has also added some additional shortcuts/app to my main screen such as flashlight, App Sharing, News and Weather, Wi-Fi hotspot and many more.

For some reason, my voice search seemed to stop working. Oddly enough, once I deleted it from the settings, it was fine. I think it has something to do with the fact that the Froyo update might of included it and thus made my oringal download redundant.

Also, Flash playback is an awesome addition.

1 month or warrenty? I should wait.

...so, just installed a fresh new stock ROM, time to upgrade it! I suppose I can later flash on a T-mobile one if I REALLY want to (lolno).

I love the genie.apk but wish I could add custom rss feeds to it. Does anyone know of a rss reader that works similarly (including widget)?

Man, Opera Mini beats the shit out of the stock browser, at least on 2.1. Way easier to navigate with the cursor too.

I don't really get why Google don't brand the Browser as Google Chrome either, you'd think the brand recognition would be great for both Android and Chrome itself. Maybe they realise they've got some way to go until they deliver something on par with the desktop version.

You should know, though that Opera Mini renders on a remote server, so you shouldn't do anything that requires a secure transfer (like logging in) on Opera Mini.

Since it's also remote, the rendering can be quite weird (like for radial buttons.)

Opera Mini is fast but I can't stand it. Everything is ugly on it, you can either be zoomed in or not, it doesn't understand what javascript is, you must wait for pictures to appear, it can't hang out and has to reload when you leave and come back...there's just a lot wrong there. It's a godsend for dumbphones but when you have a webkit browser there's just no reason to use it. I'm willing to wait the extra 5 seconds for a more enjoyable browsing experience.

can someone clearly explain to me the following:

I have a rooted droid with CM6-RC2. I have rom manager and titanium backup installed. I barely know what i'm doing in terms of rom switching. Is it possible to:

1) switch roms without losing app data (it really sucks to have to start a game over, i already had to when i rooted)
2) switch roms while keeping the paid apps connected to the market (i've read that you can back up the apk but then you lose the ability to auto update)

If it is possible, can someone clearly explain how?

If you are talking about temporarily switching to another ROM, then switching back, you can use ROM Manager to make a backup. When you restore your backup, you will have all of the same programs, settings, etc. Everything will be the same.

If you are talking about permanently migrating to a different ROM, use Titanium Backup to backup all user apps and data (from the Batch menu). When you flash the new ROM, you will need to download TB from the market if it is not included. You can then choose to re-install any apps and data/settings using TB. I strongly recommend that you re-install missing apps from the market instead of TB and only restore data for apps that you need it for. Restoring data or apps can sometimes cause you to start getting Force Closes in the new ROM. When you run the batch restore option in TB it will let you select which things to restore. I have found that it is generally best to restore only the data that shows up as green text and not the stuff that shows as red text.

I've been wondering, I currently use bugless beast .4 on my droid but was wondering how cyanogen was. Is there any significant differences?

Any good management/RTS games on the Market I might have missed. Something along the lines of Settlers, or Anno or even Theme Hospital!
There is The Settlers...but its definitely not made for the high end Android phones

Can anyone recommend any City-ID-like apps that identify the location of calls and other info? Seems like an app no-brainer. City ID's ok I guess, and I'd pay the $2 for the area code database I suppose, but $2/month for that is a joke.

I don't know about an app for it, but you can do a reverse lookup on White Pages for free.

Just posted this in the hardware thread... realized it prolly belongs in this thread:

Shit :lol

I got called over to my stores Mobile Department (because I'm known as the Android nerd of the store) because a customer had a loooot of questions about the Galaxy S - I answered pretty much all of them, and even showed him how to do it on the phone demo we had (I had to play it by ear, but I figured it all out quickly enough) - only problem is, I told him about the speech to text feature, but I could not find it on the phone!!! The hell? I know it's supposed to appear whenever you have a text input field - but I could not find it, I even checked the settings, and all I could find was a greyed out button saying "Install text to speech data?" - implying it's already been installed, and that's the opposite of what I want.

Does the Vibrant not have that feature installed natively or what?

Is there any way to download apps that were removed from the Market?

I used to have this great MLB scoreboard app called Vireo Baseball Scores, but it was removed from the market. Once I wiped and rooted my Droid, I lost that app. I can't find a worthy alternative. :(

Just found this one called WorldCallPlaceAndTime that seems quite decent. Free, 4.5 stars and the only negative reviews are from people who clearly didn't properly d/l the database that goes along with it. Shows both location of call and time at location, which is pretty neat and more than CityID already. Guess I'll see how well it works today.

So when people call you does it indicate what city they're calling from on the caller ID? If so, that's pretty cool.

Yep, this little box pops up with country, city, and time. You can customize the color of the box and text and the size and location of the box. I have City ID so right now it shows both and comparing it to that it pops up maybe a second later (but still quickly), and gives time which City ID doesn't.

i thought swype was preinstalled on droidX.
how do i use it?

Not the OTA. It'll most likely break root. But if you're rooted you'll probably be able to flash a 2.2 ROM.
what's OTA?
sorry.:lol

how about the other way around?
i install 2.2 THEN i root?

It's all good, I believe on Android you can change your input method by long pressing the area where you're typing and it'll give you options for your input method.

OTA = Over The Air update, meaning you can download it right on the phone. I said OTA but also meant any official update. Any official update will break root, naturally.

That answers your third question, no, Official 2.2 has not been rooted yet. Root and then flash a custom rom.

Don't jump into rooting, though. Get to know your device and see if you want an extensively larger amount of functionality, then read into it. THIS would be a good thread for you to read.

Enjoy your phone.

Holy crap. I just tried out Google Translate with voice to text-- amazing! This would be so amazingly useful when visiting a foreign country where you don't speak the language.

Also, just discovered SwitchPro widget. So great! It allows easy toggle switches for WiFi, screen rotate, lock screen, silent mode, battery life, etc. Awesome.
