On another note, I love Tasker. Probably going to buy it after my trial version expires. Anybody have any good Tasker profiles they want to share? Right now I only have a work profile set (switch to vibrate, change brightness), a youtube volume/brightness adjust when opened, and a list of apps pop up menu when I plug in headphones.

I just wanted to make it clear to you, and anyone else with Android, that while the manufacturer might not give you stock Android, you have the power (and many tools) to take it for yourself. And there are many, many really amazing developers out there offering everything you could want.
Pretty sure that's because so some app can take sceencaps of your phone when you're entering important information and send it somewhere. I could be wrong, though.jonnybryce said:I don't think you can do it unrooted which does suck. For me I mainly care about website screenshots to text people funny or interesting things and I've found Siteshot (a workaround in the share menu where it reloads the page in a mini app and saves the area you want onto SD) and Dolphin Browser's add on.
Google really needs to add it though.

You could try MusicMod, it's very nice and has some nice widgets. I'm far too attached to how Sense puts its Now Playing with controls on the lockscreen so it's not an option for me. But if you're not using a Sense branded phone or don't like Sense it'll probably be more than good enough for you. Instead I'm using the stock HTC player with Pure Music widgets. See below for an example.Kraftwerk said:Music player Halp!
on most screenshots I've seen the music player looking really sleek with album art.I dl"d mixzing..its good but not exactly what I'm looking for.any recommendations?
jonnybryce said:It's becoming very frustrating. I don't think will happen. To be honest, I think Google will find one manufacturer to partner with for a stock Android phone and the rest will run around with skins, kind of like today with the Droid 1 vs Droid 2, Incredible, Droid X, LG Ally, etc. And people that opt for the stock experience miss out - all the devices innovating and being released all the time will have custom UIs just as we see today from the Epic 4G to Droid X to Incredible. The bigger and better screens, processors, etc all go to these custom UI phones while the stock is thrown into the wild, aging and not offering any of the new cool stuff.
Motorola just said that Motoblur is important, not going away and a key in differentiating themselves. Why do none of these companies care about what the consumer wants? Bloggers, blog commenters, forums, Twitter, everywhere you can look users are saying we don't want your custom UI we want STOCK and will give our money to the manufacturer who makes and updates the best STOCK phone. But they don't listen.
If I can't get a solid stock Android 3.0 phone I'm probably jumping ship. It's a dealbreaker for me and it's not just about updates but the whole experience.

The virus comes to you in the form of harmless media player app titled Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a. The .apk, weighing in at 13kb, is said to use your device to unknowingly send SMS messages to premium rate numbers; Essentially giving away a whole lot of money. In order to avoid Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a, Kaspersky is advising to be extra cautious installing apps, and be attentive to what the app is requesting from you. This isnt the first virus to hit the Android operating system, and unfortunately, it wont be the last. At this point, its not quite certain how wide-spread the trojan has become. If you have any problems with it, be sure to get the word out on how you

Is that really what everyone is saying? I know *I* want stock and maybe you do too, but when I look at what everyone is saying in threads like this, I see a lot of people who want the new features/fixes that are in stock Android OS updates, but they don't necessarily want a purely stock experience. The majority of this thread is using one home replacement or another, for example, same for soft keyboards. A lot of people swear by Sense UI. Etc.jonnybryce said:Why do none of these companies care about what the consumer wants? Dictionary.com has an app that is solid. It's relatively barebones, but it gets the job done and it's free. It also offers an audio pronunciation for most words.AstroLad said:what's a good dictionary app?

If you go to Engadget the highest ranked comments are the ones saying we hate custom. The actual posts by the writers say the same. In this thread there have been plenty of pleads for stock and diggs at Samsung for Touchwiz although it turned out a little better than we expected in the end.kaching said:Is that really what everyone is saying? And since the OEMs and carriers seem to be stepping up the pace at which they implement the stock Android updates, I doubt you're going to find a lot of people displeased with the situation.
I'd like to see another flagship phone like the N1 running stock Android in the future, but if carriers/OEMs remain committed to relatively fast updates when new stock versions become available, I say close enough.

HTC may have stepped up to the plate but from Droid X to Samsungs Galaxys, the months and months are still the rule and HTC was simply the exception; whether the reasoning is the challenge of porting, the manpower + low priority or simply not giving a fuck.
Launcher Pro is such a success because it itself is awesome, people with Touchwiz, Motoblur and Sense also love it - not just people with stock looking to escape stock. No one is saying the stock launcher is the best or that stock is the prettiest but the point is that Android can be customized through the app store without manufacturers baking in custom uis that introduce new delays, bugs, methods of operation and compatibility issues with apps.
People may be buying the Droid X or Incredible but there's still a large prescense screaming for stock and no one seems to want to step up to the plate for that. I will never buy a Touchwiz phone, Sense is nice but in the end its become more of a facelift than anything else and the old Motoblur fails to do anything a few apps couldn't while the new one is a little messy and not without its problems (the last post I saw in the Droid X thread was someone complaining that Motos custom message app is slow. Same for the Galaxy, the software often makes it slow).
Is this a huge issue in anyones life? No, but its baffling that none of the manufacturers realize a AAA phone with stock slapped on is another super easy way to "differentiate" yourself from the competition. Its odd that the OS people root for and see Google showing off in conferences is becoming impossible to buy; you basically have to pick a skin you like the most.

For me personally I generally use the Desire ports for my Nexus One though there isn't a real stable one out there right now.tokkun said:Personally if I had to choose between 2.2 Stock and 2.1 Sense, I would choose Sense. There are a lot of little touches in Sense that make it a superior experience in my opinion, even if you are using LauncherPro instead of the Sense launcher.
Yes, you could probably eventually get similar functionality out of Stock with replacement widgets, keyboards, and skins, but that would require a lot of work. Given that the EVO was one of the first devices to receive 2.2, it seems clear to me that Sense is not a big issue preventing timely updates, and that it depends on other factors.

But are most of these people really saying they want to operate using the stock OS experience? It's not unlike the way the Engadget crowd have trumped up the "fragmentation" concerns previously. Just a different coat of paint.jonnybryce said:If you go to Engadget the highest ranked comments are the ones saying we hate custom. The actual posts by the writers say the same.
Customizing solely through the app store is no guarantee against bugs or compatibility issues with apps. And some were frustrated with the delay just between Google's announcement of Froyo being complete and the few weeks it took to get on the N1. Stock isn't a guarantee against seeing the very same complaints that are levelled against custom - everyone just shifts their perpsective to be even more impatient.jonnybryce said:No one is saying the stock launcher is the best or that stock is the prettiest but the point is that Android can be customized through the app store without manufacturers baking in custom uis that introduce new delays, bugs, methods of operation and compatibility issues with apps.
It's odd that people rooting for an open-source OS don't appreciate that that is exactly what it enables. You can't have one without the other. Its odd that the OS people root for and see Google showing off in conferences is becoming impossible to buy; you basically have to pick a skin you like the most.
