Android Software Thread - Tasty Desserts, Tastier Apps

Here's a dumb question:

I notice in videos that when one flicks from screen to screen on the Android desktop, the "foreground" icons and widgets move a lot, while the "background" wallpaper only moves a little, or sometimes doesn't move at all. There's a fairly extreme parallax effect, in other words.

I'm not really digging that. It looks weird to me. I would much prefer if the background moved with the icons, or maybe moved just slightly slower than the icons. Is that possible? Is it just a function of how wide a wallpaper image you tell the phone to use?

Widget Locket is so badass. Fixed a lot of small issues I had. For one I cut out the damn buzzing when you unlock. Also allowed volume to be changed using the side buttons and changed the sound to vibrate/on instead of silent, which I never use. Finally threw on google.com and dialer unlock widgets. So good.

anyone know of a good widget that shows your cell connection so i can do away with the status bar?

I haven't come across an app or setting that lets you customize how much it scrolls, but it depends on how many screens you have. More home screens = less scrolling, less home screens = more scrolling. In launcherpro, there's a setting to keep the wallpaper static while you scroll, though.

So I've set up the feeds for Google Listen, but I can't seem to get things to go into 'fresh items' in my queue. I've got some items in my normal queue, and I can see that the newest episode of 'This Week in Tech' is in 'My subscriptions', but when I hit refresh on 'Fresh items' it doesn't pull it into the list. Any advice?

Anyone?

* Browse the app to see what your friends are watching, check out their profiles, and click on posters to navigate directly to the shows they are watching.
* Socialize and chat with your friends and other TV fans by liking and commenting on any check-in to any show.
* See what TV shows are currently trending among all Miso users and discover new shows.
* Use voice search, a cool Android feature that makes finding your shows as easy as saying the show name!
* Unlock badges and earns points for your all your check-ins.
* And just like on the iPhone, view all your earned badges and check out hints for badges you haven’t earned.

There are many more features are coming soon, but we hope you like this first version of Miso for Android. Leave a comment below and let us know what you think!

If anyone is interested in following the development of my Android game, here you go. It'll probably seem boring if you're not a coder, but I'll have some non-coding posts once in a while.

Holy shit, Andrex! You made the minimal matte theme? I saw that on XDA! :lol

Well, dang. And the width and/or aspect ratio of the background image has no effect on the scrolling behavior?

I don't believe you can even change the aspect ratio. Then again, I haven't really researched it much. There are different settings you can play with, like the inertia and bouncing effect to reduce that parallax effect though, but like I said, I haven't looked into it, but honestly, it bugged me at first, then I stopped noticing, but now I have it static.

Ignore that. Tab navigating failure on my part :lol

Haha, you confused the heck out of me. I got really excited, and reread all of Andrex's posts so far trying to find the connection.

Anyway, definitely going to follow it, Andrex. I do code (also for a living :( ), and have actually done a bit of dabbling myself with making an Android app, so this will be a learning experience by proxy for me.

Phone to Chrome

Android/Chrome: If you've got something loaded on your Android that you'd like to see in a full browser, you could email it, copy/paste the link, or just try and remember. Or use android2cloud to instantly open the link in Chrome.

Android2cloud is the inverse of the very cool Chrome to Phone extension, and works in similar fashion. After installing the Android app (available at the site and in the Market), installing the Chrome extension, and authenticating both apps through your Google account, you'll get one-button transmission powers between your two Google browsers. You can copy/paste a URL through android2cloud itself, but it's easier to hit the "Share page" option on a web page and choose android2cloud as the vessel.

Android2cloud is a free download for Android and Chrome, and requires a Google account to connect the two.

Very cool and very useful. I've been using it for 2 days now and love it!

Ugh. Why does everyone have such awful backgrounds on their Androids? Backgrounds should be subtle so the icons stand out. Most screenshots I've seen on here show users have the asthetic eye of a jellyfish. :lol

I have a pretty kool live wallpaper. It basically changes your BG randomly or on dbl. click. It never gets boring and doesnt use much battery. I would have liked that cover wallpaper if it was dynamic with the covers flying at you.

Btw. I have a great idea for a live wallpaper, anyone interested in coding it with me? Please write me a PM.

Does anyone know how to solve the "Failed download" error in the market? I've already tried to clear the Market cache, kill the app and restart the phone with no results...

What's the best software to use to sync music from my computer to my Droid? I'm trying to use doubleTwist now but it's not recognizing all my music on my computer.

Some will say iSyncr (was glad for Android refunds), but I had a bad experience with it. If doubleTwist isn't working, I would just recommend a manual drag and drop. Never fails.

IMHO this is the best live wallpaper for when I have my Nexus docked and using MusicMod's "Now Playing" screen. It give it that Media Center look and feel.

Other than that I rarely look at my homepages any more. My phone is either docked or in my pocket, until I need to use it. Widgetlocker has become my most go-to homescreen, and on that I have a totally different wallpaper (less crowded, much simpler).

WISH WIDGET LOCKER worked with launcherpro widgets. Kuz i absolutely love the messenger widget in LP.

This. Someone needs to make this happen!

Is there any way to get walking/transit turn-by-turn directions on Google Navigation (not Maps), or is it driving only?

if you aren't tied to itunes you can also try out songbird

Is there any workaround for not being able to access certain apps on the Market for non-US residents? It's really beginning to piss me off. Anything like setting up another account with a US postal address ala App Store?
