What update are G1s stuck at? i cant get anything above 1.5 right? im starting to hate my g1 after seeing everyones new droids, but my contract isnt up until next summer.

G1s are stuck at 1.6.

time for you to root and install a custom ROM while you wait for next summer.

Angry birds is so good. I bought the castle game (ripoff) and I like it, but it's no angry birds. I love that tapping again unlocks new abilities. I've never actually played it before, what a fun game.

Might be old but..... Galaxy S owners might wanna check out samsung apps, there is a samsung-made Facebook app to download, as we'll assume a kart racing game from konami to get for free as well.

AngryBirds is so fucking awesome. Also, what's the best Twitter widget? Is the LP+ one sufficient or are there better ones out there. Going to use Twitter as my news widget on my Evo

The Twitter widget in LP Plus is good enough if you just want to read/post tweets and open links.

For me, that is all I need and I uninstalled the Twitter app I had installed. I use Twitter more or less as a 'cliff notes' version of a newsreader anyway with tech and gaming news sources added.

Right now it has a default 15 min refresh but the dev claims you'll be able to change that in an upcoming release.

Swype is a great product with an absolutely atrocious, arrogant and unhelpful team. Like most everyone else in the world, Swype wouldn't install correctly for me. I went to their web site, finally found their forums...and all but one or two threads are locked down with the explanation from a mod "This has been answered before go use search." My common problem (Swype not registering when I actually swipe my words) wasn't in the common problems thread or any other open thread that I could find.

I worked on that shit for an hour last night to get it working properly again (then promptly deleted it), no thanks to the asshole developers. If you don't want to help people, don't start a damn forum.

XDA (That doesn't excuse the devlopers' shittiness, though) is where you should always go.

I know this doesn't help you with your swype problem, but check out swift keyboard from the market.. it is a normal tap-to-type keyboard, however it's prediction engine is genius - it'll guess, based on the inbuilt lanugage database, your smses, and what you type on that keyboard from then onwards

After using it for almost a month, it guesses half the words i want to write before I tap a single letter of that word, it's both great and scary at the same time :lol

In their defense this is how many forums work and it's annoying, like Launcher Pro. Everything's about using their built in shitty search and being yelled at when the search doesn't pull up anything.

Touiteur, or however fuck you spell that. Best one I've used (amongst that, launcher pro one and the official twitter widget).

The entire troubleshooting sub-forum is barely more than 1 page of threads (with most of them locked:lol ). Not exactly moderating GAF.

I really liked the product, too bad the support is trash.

Downloaded Froyo yesterday. Has Froyo opened up anything exciting? I'm so tired of seeing apps I don't use pop up under Advanced Task Killer. Also, is rooting easier now? I really want to improve battery life beyond what programs such as Juice Defender can provide.

I thought you didn't need atk with froyo

My problem is applications I never use such Stocks will run in the background constantly. I would like to prevent them from running without my permission.

Thing is - battery gets eaten and resources taxed every time it loads. Once loaded it should just sit there and do nothing.

If it is loading during startup and you don't ever use it, use this to manage what programs load during startup: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.bright.startup2

If you kill it and it starts by itself, I would uninstall it or leave it be. An auto killer will just kill battery as it loads then is killed, loads and killed. Manually killing is the same - it just doesn't help anything unless it is always processing in the background (check by battery usage, partial wake).

Basically any program that actually NEEDs a task killer should be deleted. The other concern is just RAM management which android seems to do fine, and I believe froyo is better, plus enables use of remaining RAM (2.1 is capped).

So I love the Kindle app - works great and looks great. The problem is, I cant import any documents into the app to read, only things I get from the store seem to work.

I'd be fine using another reader (the adobe PDF reader is great for PDFs, and other texts all have their own apps that work for them) but the problem is, I can't find any others that do the black background with the white text thing - and that thing is great for battery life :(.

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

It can't override the network's restrictions

Hm, that's weird. I use a separate voicemail service that I forward from my Desire and whenever someone leaves me a message I can see their number from them. I thought the number would be embedding in the signal or something like that (if that makes sense).

U tried aldiko?

(Stupid interwebs)

Was looking at it right as you suggested it :p. We'll see if it works, I just downloaded Laputa as well, but I don't think that has what I'm looking for.
To change background / text colour, open a book, tap on the screen and you'll find settings.

Yeah got it working! I need to convert things to epub first, but aw well, it's the best I'm going to get.

Describing anything Angry Birds like as a ripoff seems highly ironic given how derivative it is of other titles.

Ok, have got HTC Desire on O2 (UK), got prompted for system software update this morning, 2.2 is here!!

Download, install, on blue O2 welcome screen..... waiting.... waiting.... nothing, fucker is bricked >:( FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.....

DO NOT DOWNLOAD OTA 2.2 UPDATE FOR HTC DESIRE ON O2 (UK)!!

Fuckers have killed my phone :(

Edit: O2 Forums page discussing issue, Tech Radar also reporting issue

Well that fucking sucks! Can you at least boot in fastboot? Vol-down or back + power.
If you can do that at least you should be able to install another (previous) rom.

No idea, never knew about that. Have never rooted my phone, not sure if that has any impact?

Edit: Got it to recovery menu, any ideas what to do from here? Selected Recovery, loads welcome screen then displays black screen with red exclamation mark over triangle. That doesn't look good....

No don't worry, that's nothing scary. Okay, at least your phone isn't bricked per se, the rom is just fucked and not booting onto the OS. From the recovery you should be able to flash an official rom (i.e without rooting or anything). Unfortunately I don't know how to do it for a Desire :( If you want to venture into doing that, do so at your own risk. It's not particularly dangerous as such, but it can get quite scary (mostly because the startup times take a loooong time and you think everything is dead:/).

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667 is a list of all official shipped Roms. Perhaps if you download the official O2 rom (RUU_Bravo_O2_UK_1.20.207.1_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06 .00.02_2_release_124865.exe) and try to flash it over what you have currently, you could revert back to the previous version?

Again, I honestly don't want you to do anything you're not comfortable with doing...

Edit: Could you check what version of HBoot you have?

To check this, turn off your device, then turn it back on with the 'back' key held. On the second line in green text you will see HBOOT- and then a number.

Went to local O2 store at lunchtime, basically they say they won't do anything other than send it off for repairs and give you a piece of shit Nokia dumbphone in the meantime >:(

Saw the suggestion for the O2 official rom in the O2 forums (same one you linked), reports of success with that. O" actually posted in the thread and said they've pulled the update for now.

Am downloading the exe, is it just a case of running it and it will provide instructions? Managed to get into recovery menu, am guessing it's a case of booting the vanilla rom from there?

Thanks for the assist!
