Went to local O2 store at lunchtime, basically they say they won't do anything other than send it off for repairs and give you a piece of shit Nokia dumbphone in the meantime >:(

Saw the suggestion for the O2 official rom in the O2 forums (same one you linked), reports of success with that. O" actually posted in the thread and said they've pulled the update for now.

Am downloading the exe, is it just a case of running it and it will provide instructions? Managed to get into recovery menu, am guessing it's a case of booting the vanilla rom from there?

Thanks for the assist!

It may be a little more complicated than that actually. Might I suggest you boot into fastboot (don't select recovery) with the USB cable connected (and hope that the drivers install correctly) and then just run the exe and see how you go on from there.

If that fails, let me know and I'll link to you more relevant articles which may be of use.

If the EXE does nothing but extract a rom image, download HTC Sync from the HTC website and use that to flash the ROM.

It sounds like your phone should definitely be recoverable this way.

The O2 store advice of sending it off to be fixed and providing you with a substitute is terrible! I can understand them not wanting to explain to computer illiterates what they have to do, but still...

If that's the case then yeah, definitely recoverable (can't check now cause I'm on a linux machine...). Even if HTC Sync fails let me know.

Also, good luck ;)

If worse comes to worst you could just root it ;D

I just installed a mod on my Spica for ext2 file system in both system and data partitions and the result is fuuuuuuck.gif

Shit is really fast booting and loading apps. I'm really glad I picked such a mod-friendly phone at such a low price :D

I'm going to have a monster-phone as soon as they release the new 3D driver to replace the shitty Samsung one.

Update: downloaded HTC Sync as my (work) laptop wasn't recognising the device by USB. Downloaded the RUU, worked perfectly :D :D

Used Mybackup pro to restore all my apps, contacts and settings, all sorted (best $5 I've spent on the Android Market!).

Running really well, now get gifs playing on GAF :lol

Thanks for everyone for all the suggestions and help, GAF to the rescue as always :D

Uh did they take Rockplayer down? I don't see it on the market.
Hmm I heard google had been pulling out his updates and he kept uploading the initial version, now it's actually gone. I wonder what happened

- Look for Instant Heart Rate in the Market
- Use the app under good light, activating the LED Flash or near a lightbulb
- Shit bricks

You can easily check how it works if you follow this procedure with the standard phone camera app

i couldn't see what was happening in the camera app, and it was a bit all over the place in the app itself

are you seeing the redness of your finger change colour or something?

The point is that the brighter part of the red blob gets bigger and smaller (don't really know how to explain it in English) with your pulse, so the app can easily calculate your heart rate.

Hey guys,
What's the easiest way to prevent apps from attempting to access the internet unless I'm on WiFi?
Only just got my phone, and just want to prevent the extra monetary spend right now.

Thanks in advance :)

Get any app/widget that can control the APN connection (like APNDroid or Extended Controls) so you can disable GRPS/3G if you want to avoid the apps connecting when you're not on Wifi.

If you are never going to use the mobile connection, just delete your APNs in Settings -> Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Points. I don't know the exact menu captions in English but I think it's enough direction. Be sure to note down all the settings if you ever want to restore them though, but it shouldn't be hard to find the connection settings in the internet anyway.

Remember you cannot enable or disable the connection on a per-app basis: it's either ON of OFF for everything.

*bows* Thank you sir

I rooted my Desire and installed OpenDesire 4.0.4 because I wanted to try this PSGroove out. But man are there problems with OpenDesire :/ Great project and much love to the ones doing it, but after only one day I am missing the hell out of the original Sense rom.

Edit: By the way, is there any GAF top android games list?

The problems you are facing (i'm assuming you mean bugs, rather than UI issues) probably occur in all of the non-Sense roms.. the Sense roms don't have as many bugs for the most part (and if you like the Sense UI, that is yet another bonus)

For me, OpenDesire (and most of the other stock UI roms) is that much better to me that I don't mind the small bugs

EDIT: i'm on 4.0.3 atm

Me too, not sure I'll hang on to OD as I much prefer just how well everything works on Sense

The thing is, the Sense interface has so much that you really don't know you miss until you run a vanilla system like openDesire.

But the bugs are not interface related. First thing is the picture quality both in video and in photo seems to be worse in openDesire then in the Sense rom (using the latest radio 32.47.00.32_5.10.05.23). The music player keeps FC'ing when trying to play songs I know work perfectly due to me ripping them myself in V0 scene standards. And last of the big bugs but not least, the internet over 3G seems to loose connection every now and then, something that never happened using the OTA Sense rom.

Honestly, I haven't tried a sense rom since 2.1, so i'm not going to assume I know which is better.. that said, I don't recall having that problem with the music player ever, and apparently the 720p records at a higher framerate (though that is second hand information).. It definitely isn't even close to being as polished as sense

That said, I don't know why, but the bells and whistles of sense never really appealed to me, and I actually prefer the stock UI for most things (other than the camera app, i can't think of anything I really miss from the official - or any sense - rom)

Such as? I'm running Sense 2.2, but using LauncherPro for the home and non-Sense widgets, and I don't miss any of the Sense goodies.

I miss the dialer/contacts so much :(
That, and the the status bar. Luckily, I am rooted so the status bar was easy to change, but that dialer :(

This, fast lookup by writing the first letters/numbers, and the music player being accessible even though screen lock is on for example.

Sure, probably are mods for those things as well. But they come with Sense in a bug free manner. And a lot of these widgets and what not are pay stuff, which we in Sweden can't access for some retarded reason :/

This sounds awesome.

the customer rom for htc desire, opendesire, just updated to 4.0.10 which fixed a whole bunch of bugs, including the optical joystick dying bug (finally!) (this also applies to cyanogen mod and any other roms that are based on it)

I agree with:
josephdebono said:

this is what i use for my dialer, does the same job as HTC's dialer, plus a bunch of extra settings

i personally prefer the simplicity of stock contacts (plus the bonus of gtalk functionality, and not spamming my gmail contact notes with HTC data), so i haven't looked for sense-like version of that

Just a note about music mod - that actually comes with open desire, so that's a bonus (might come with sense-roms too, i'm not sure)

both of the above apps are free

also.. i'm not sure if this is common for all desire roms or all android roms or just cyanogen[/opendesire], because i only noticed it a week or so ago.. when your screen is off, and headset is plugged in, you can hold the volume up button down to switch to next song, and hold volume down to switch to the previous song - i love using that functionality in the car, much better for me than using a lockscreen widget to skip songs

Any word if netflix is going to release an Android app like they did for ios?

Most certainly... Netflix's strategy is to get their streaming media app on as many devices as possible. They were hiring for an android video expert back in April. I don't know how complicated it is to build their app, but I don't think Apple has any kind of exclusive contract.

I believe Win Phone 7 will debut with Netflix, so I don't think they would let android phones lag too far behind the others.

So I just woke up and saw my battery went from 90% to 8% overnight and decided to download 'Spare Parts' to see what is draining the battery. But all I can find is the battery usage for board categories like running, screen on, wifi on (which I can see normally on my X10 via quick setting).

So my question is, is it possible to see battery usage for individual apps, if so how I can find such information (I looked but couldn't find :( )

Partial wake usage is a good one for seeing what's draining your battery.

Thanks. I'll charge it first and see what happens afterward :)

Yep, try looking at partial wake stats in Spare Parts.. Probably a rogue app that stays awake, Facebook became that way with most recent update so I uninstalled and use the touch site again until they decide to fix it. Lot of comments on the Market regarding that.

Not surprised to see that Cubed (^3) is raping my battery :lol but it's the only half-decent free music player out there. Facebook takes a chunk as well, but nothing really serious compared to other apps.

Man, this would be absolutely perfect if I could respond to text messages through the desktop.

So I've been working on a small project in my spare time with my Nexus One (although is should work with any Android 2.0+ device). Basically it allows you to connect to your phone via WiFi and do a few different things like view/send SMS, view notifications, remotely control the camera and/or transfer files to and from the device. It's a work in progress, I just figured I'd post some screenshots here to see what kind of interest is out there.

Still in development, but very cool, and it can run on any platform that has Java.

Get Google Voice. In Chrome, there's an extension that is synced with your GV account. You can receive and send texts through Chrome and look at your text inbox. I use it all the time at home.

Pretty sure they fixed that issue within a day or two with another update. I have no partial lock issues with Facebook at all now.

Street View on Google Maps: Smart Navigation

Where is your street God now!!?

Lifehacker said:
Google already had walking directions built-in to the Maps app, but they've added those directions to the turn-by-turn navigation portion of Android, allowing you to use pedestrian paths and other sometimes easier routes than driving navigation would give you.

In addition, they've added the Street View smart navigation that we're used to on the desktop. As shown in the above video, you can now enter street view and navigate through it by dragging and dropping Pegman to different locations on the screen. Google also added the search bar to the top of the main Maps window, so you no longer need to hit the search button every time you open maps. The bar will not only search maps, but open Places, use the Layers menu, or instantly zoom in on your location. Hit the link for a full rundown of the new update.

Maps is a free download for Android devices.

Also the new Google Voice app is up on the market.

I'll have to try re-downloading it then. They messed it up, fixed it, then released another one that made it have the same issue so I uninstalled. But I'll check it out.

No way! I have Google Voice AND the Chrome Google Voice extension. Is that the extension you're talking about (the official Google one)?
