Potential good news on the gaming front:

Electronic Arts CFO Eric Brown said that the major game publisher and developer is "positioning its mobile business" to reflect a predicted rise in Google's Android OS for gaming over the next few years.

Speaking at a Deutsche Bank 2010 Technology Conference presentation covered elsewhere by Gamasutra, Brown cited a report from analyst IDC, which he reported as saying that in 2014 Android may have a 25% market share, compared to 11% for Apple devices.

The new CFO for the Madden and Need For Speed publisher particularly noted: "So I think there's a lot to happen in the future in Android, and we’re trying to position our mobile business to take advantage of that trend."

If I want to factory reset my phone, what do I have to backup? Photos & apps? I can use appbrain to save a list of my apps right? Anything else?

Has anyone else had this problem [with LP]?
Yeah. LP sometimes slows down to a crawl on my Nexus One C6 ROM. It'll freeze and hung up for 15-30 seconds sometimes, too. It happens a couple times a day but not enough for me to get me to switch to ADW.

The LP dev is adding in all this nonsense and forgets what made his app awesome in the first place. Such a shame.

He should release a stripped down basics version with none of the fluff.

TexDro has been updated with a Pro-version. What an awesome program.

Here's the site

I really recommend it.
Sounds cool but I just use Google Voice instead. I wish there was an option to keep phone notifications synced with desktop notifications.

i get no noticeable slowdown or delay with LP and i use most of the plus widgets. Sounds like a C6 issue with LP, and not a stock/LP issue

I agree. Even though i have 5 pages full of widgets and use many of the lp widgets i never noticed any slow down, but redraws happen from time to time.

Just purchased fruit ninja from the android market this morning. Really fun game, and probably the best game you can get for .99 cents! (never played the iphone/touch version).

Runs well on my nexus one, though I really wish there was a app2sd card option (it's 16.23 megs).

Eh, Nexus One here and the framerate is pretty lame, and there is no multi-touch. Makes the game a lot harder to play than the version i've got on my ipod. Refunded :\

Also exposes the touch screen lag.

Today on "Carriers suck":

Optus (australian carrier) accidentally blocked the google talk service from accessing 3G (this service is required for downloading apps from the market, using google talk, and as far as I can tell from what has been lacking today - push notifications) - all work over wifi, and on other carriers, so it is definitely an Optus thing

They've been contacted and it turns out they are "on the case" and are *trying* to fix it.. sigh

I am currently looking into buying an android phone (i hope this is the right thread BTW) and came down to the Samsung Galaxy 3 since this is completely in my budget. I have found many reviews (mostly positive )but almost no hands ons. Would you recommend this phone? It currently runs android 2.1 and according to Samsung a update to 2.2 will be coming. Any opinions?

EDIT:
Dammit, would have been a question for the Android Hardware thread I guess. Didnt see that one. Should I post it over there?

The resolution is what I'd be most concerned about, most apps are built with 320x480 as a minimum, and some apps will not work on screen resolutions that do not match or exceed this (HTC Wildfire and X10 mini for example)

Its also worth looking around at the state of the modding community on some of these phones, especially if you have a budget to stick to. Often the 'cheaper' handsets get left behind by the manufacturers when it comes to update, but if there is a healthy community behind the phone there is no reason why you should be left behind. Check XDA, Modaco and AndroidForums for more info.

Hm, so you say I would not be able to use some(or many?) apps from the market? I currently have a nokia 5800 and would love me some capacitive and android based system. It is around 200€ here. Was browsing to the forums you recommended me but could only find some topics for this phone. Apparently it isnt that popular. Since this phone is apparently a dumbed down Galaxy s, would you recommend it? And how is the TouchWiz interface on the samsungs?

I think the answer is in the bolded. If you're getting a phone that is already behind the tech curve by quite a bit, you're going to be left behind by updates and a lot of games or software may not work. Best bet is to spend a little more and get a high end phone if you're going to be stuck with it for a year or two.

I actually came from a Nokia 5800 as well, but I've got the Galaxy S. It was a very nice upgrade (esp since my 5800 screen was about to die)

I'm not sure how many apps the resolution issue will affect, I can't see it being a lot but something to think about when it comes to the future.

Touchwiz is crap, its a poor attempt at copying the iPhone interface. Luckily its easy to swap out, I installed LauncherPro and used that as my homescreen interface instead, a lot better than touchwiz (and free, the Plus version is only $3 though and handy if you want Twitter/Facebook widget stream)

Its hard to recommend any phones as I'm not sure how prices compare on mainland Europe. There are a few budget models around in the UK like the Galaxy i5700 and T-Mobile Pulse which can be had for cheap these days, or for a bit more you can pick up an Acer Liquid for £200, which is a steal given the specs of the phone (768mhz snapdragon, 5mp camera, 3.5" 480x800 screen). Course, prices may vary greatly in Germany so.... :/

I really wanted to buy Fruit Ninja. But since I live in Brazil, the damn game won't show up on the market for me, not even with Market Enabler/Market Access.

This really bums me out.

What are the differences between the two grid calendars on the market? My launcher pro is completely fucked now so will have to improvise with adw and cm6.

OpenFeint games need to implement apps2sd, the dot game has it but the open feint app and fruit ninja do not.

Sigh. So annoying to have to worry and hold back because of these kinds of things.

Anyone remember the Square app that lets you charge credit and debit cards on your phone? My card reader finally shipped. I signed up almost 3 months ago I think.

What are the fees like for that?

Square charges the seller 2.75 percent of the total plus 15 cents for every card-swipe, and 3.5 percent plus 15 cents for transactions made with a manually-entered card number

I don't have my own business but I figured this was too cool to pass up.

So, does anyone know if Chase will ever release a compatible app to the iPhone one? Any news on this?

I recommend contacting them on the site and asking. I was annoyed that there was no app for my bank, asked online and got a release date and a surprisingly detailed response about their plans for apps from Blackberry to iPhone and Android. It's a solid app, I'm impressed with it considering how basic and awkward their desktop site is.

i read on some android forum that it's slated for the end of this month, poster apparently worked for a chase branch, so at least the rumors are good :D

Mine stopped force closing when I marked all my unread gmails as read (there were quite a few). So far, so good.

LauncherPro has an option to show unread email count in the dock. Disable that and you should be good to go.

It was still force-closing all the time with that disabled. I'll just have to read all my gmails in the future :lol

Downloaded a really good game called Mini Squadron the other day.. You can try the lite version here. The full version is there as well and is only $.99 through the 19th. This is one of those big games from iOS that was brought over this week thanks to OpenFeint.

Edit: Just got an email that there is a new Angry Birds beta out so check the market and see if that's available as well.

One thing I do miss about both my wife and I having iphones is that we could share accounts, so we only had to buy and app once. I wish there was a way to do that on android, since many times when I want to buy a game, I'm pretty sure she would want it too.

Sirius/XM 2.2 update is out!

Hope they fixed that looping issue. The audio sounds good so far.

edit: it seems like it's all fixed. No skipping or looping for a whole 10 minutes +

Didn't really pay attention before but the screenshots look great, I'm going to give it a shot. I'm not really aboard the "omg angry birds!" train like much of the mobile gaming world - to me it's mega similar to and a little less fun than Crazy Penguin Catapult.

I hope this is a sign of things to come. Open Feint and EA news this week, good stuff.

edit: Mini Squadron is hella awesome, confirmed. Just spent 5 minutes clearing the first level. Gorgeous and fun.

Yep, those screenshots really don't do it justice, but it's the quickest ones I could find. I could do some screen captures if people really want to see more but I suggest trying the light version and supporting the devs by buying the full game. It's only $.99 so you really can't go wrong.

I'm looking for a small, neat music player to use with luncher pro on my non-rooted HTC hero 2.1

I'd like it to be 1x4, show album art and some simple play|pause|next|prev buttons with the option to have no background behind the widget - any recommendations?

In other good gaming news, Fruit Ninja updated to allow apps2sd for all the measly 150ish mb of storage Androiders like myself (Droiiiiiiiiiid) and I just came across a few other nice looking titles

Legends of Arcana
6BMqU.png

and Overkill

.

Android gaming is definitely getting better - more high quality games are popping up more often. My Windows Phone 7 envy is diminishing.

You mean 4x1? Try music mod.

Thanks for recommending me LauncherPro, looks really nice :) Since I found someone who is willing to buy my phone for 120€, I think i will go with the Galaxy 3. I couldnt find the Acer Liquid and the other phones you posted. I just hope that the promises are true and the galaxy 3 will get the 2.2. update which really looks awesome:).
And I think for 80 € i cant go wrong with this phone(I hope). So i just wait till Tuesday(my birthday) and go to the shop. Will post my impressions on Tuesday.

Any other apps that are a must have? Will probably download launcher pro first:)
