Got my Android today, super amazed with how awesome it is. Looking forward to scouring this thread for the best apps. Already got a modest amount myself- trying to keep it to just stuff I want/need.

YouTube in my pocket, is huge for me.
What phone did you get?

Grrr, last-post-of-page hell

Not sure if mentioned yet, but i was personally interested in when Chase was going to release an official app for Android, and it's now available

http://www.appbrain.com/app/chase-mobile/com.chase.sig.android

I've read complaints about people's checks not being captured clearly enough by their phone's camera...I tried today with my HTC Hero, first attempt said it was too blurry, so i moved to a closer light source, and second attempt had no problems

thanks for posting.

Argh, Im having problems with the android market app today, for some reason it wont download anything (not even updates). I got an Evo 4G running Launcher Pro :C

Also, as much as Im liking App Brain, the fact that I can't see the pictures, or that it takes a while to finally realize that there is an update, are big letdowns, other than that, it is really awesome!

Try finding market in your application settings and clearing the data.

The Market is one of the things that annoys me about Android. Not that it is supposedly hard to find stuff (since I always know what I'm looking for, that isn't a problem for me.) It's the fact that I often have problems downloading from the thing >_<

I usually just attribute my Market problems with the fact that I'm running the CM6 nightlies.

I did clear both data and cache, but nothing. It does begin the download, but it closes it before it downloads anything....

If Honeycomb is the tablet OS, does that mean that future smartphones will skip it and go on to the next version?

Honeycomb is what will optimize Android for larger screen sizes but it should still provide smartphones with new features.

Nice, I've been wanting this one for a while.

Is there an easy way (e.g. no flashing) to replace the standard battery symbol on a rooted froyo with a battery circle?

I don't know about other phones, but for Samsung Spica you just have to flash a small modified file (the framework I think) with the new look&feel info (for example, I use one that changes the notification bar to black and the main colour is green). No need to flash a whole ROM.

Could try metamorph.

generally you get them via flashing update.zips though

When I flash an update.zip does my system stay intact?

Yes but I think you need to be rooted in the first place to be able to flash update.zips.

Also, technically it depends on the nature of the update.zip. Themes, fonts, batteries, etc leave the system intact, but full roms and radios can also be distributed as update.zips

Edit: ohz, you're rooted. Make sure the update.zip in question is compatible with your current rom and no problem then bro.

you can flash official update.zip's unrooted

honeycomb will most likely not be made for phones, it will be like the iOS Ipad split, many expect the two paths to come back together after honeycomb.

Is there a good replacement sms app for android aside from chomp and handcent? I heard chomp has horrible ads now and I tried handcent but didn't like it. The interface felt too clunky for me

Blocking the main revenue source for small time developers seems pretty unethical.

Well, if he wants something good and free of ads, thats how he'd have to go unless there's ad free version that he'd have to pay for.

There is the ability to disable ads at a cost. If he wants no ads, he should pay for it. If he wants to not pay, he should live with the ads. If he can't accept either of these options, he should not use the software.

Advocating piracy is a bannable offence. Please don't do it again.

Edit: Yes, I know it's not strictly speaking piracy. But it's pretty much equivalent in my book, and I'll still be banning for it.

Righto.

Im not sure if its been posted yet but you can now stream large amounts of porn directly to your tv via the phone. I came across an app called Sex Tube Pro while browsing Appaware. So far Ive been able to play every single video Ive clicked on. I'm using an EVO and the app does state that in order to stream you have to be running 2.2. You can also download the movies.

I hooked my phone up to the tv and all of the videos show. You can forward and rewind on the phone while the video still plays on your tv. You cant search within the app but they give you a long list of categories. Its not very fancy. There are no options to speak of. Literally when you hit the menu button nothing happens. What it lacks for in bells and whistles it makes up in the fact that the videos work and it's one of the few apps that stream right to the tv.

To be fair, the ads in Chomp have gotten out of control. It shows you full screen ads after sending messages...ugh! I had to switch to Handcent.

Yeah... seriously. It's really annoying. and the constant ad bar on the top in your message list is frustrating too.

I'm sure the paid version is lovely but the free version just has all the stuff crammed in (text freak, wtf is that?) that handcent is mostly free of.

I suppose the interface, ads aside, is kind of slightly nicer though. One thing I've wondered though: these apps are virtually identical, did they both split from the same original program or something?

Yeah. Switching to Handcent or paying to remove ads appear to be the obvious choices. :D

Update on SetCPU: my battery life skyrocketed. I only used it to underclock when the screen is off and today I woke up with my phone at over 70 percent (even though I was using my phone to download stuff and play music yesterday). I'm more of a normal phone user than someone who plays games all day on their phones so having improved stand-by battery life is a huge deal to me. It helps that my phone (X10 mini) can underclock to as low as 122mhz.

Settings I used (phone normally runs at 600 mhz):

Regular settings 600 max, 320 min, ondemand
Profile: Screen off 480 max, 122 min, ondemand

Simple as that. This is probably the app to go root (before I had a hard time finding a reason why I went root, except for removing bloatware).

Thanks for the ones in the thread for the heads up on this app :)

Subtle visual refresh, with some sharper icons and button edges.

I have my heart set on a Droid X, good choice?

Great choice. Lovely screen and though there are some hiccups with Motorola's software, it is fast and responsive.

Verizon is going to be releasing a 2.2.1 to fix some of those glitches.

Good to hear. What about the camera? Is the image quality good?

Black notification bar! Yes!
Fonts and edges look sharper and easier on the eyes.

Someone needs to leak this.

I've been rocking a black...well...really dark gray notification bar with CM6 for a while now. Why aren't you rooted?

Ugh.

I was updating the NYtimes and Google Translate apps. Right when they finished downloading, the Market app crashed and gave me the force close option. I forced closed.

Now, whenever I go into the Market and go to "Downloads" under the menu button, the only app it lists is WidgetLocker even though I have about 20 apps downloaded.

I was rooted and even had CM 6 rc1 on my phone. But went back to stock in hopes that by this time gingerbread would have been out. Then this whole Nexus S debacle happened and now the OS update has been pushed to some time in December.

Once CM is on Gingerbread I will probably install it.
