Android Thread - 2011 Edition | Stuffed on Gingerbread, Hungry for Honeycomb!

For those looking for an Android Tablet I highly recommend the Nook Color over the Galaxy Tab. For $250 I couldn't be happier.

Check the official thread here.

And videos of it in action here and here.

Rooted Nook Color Vs. Galaxy Tab video comparison here.

As an owner of the now ancient HTC Hero, I was hoping to maybe upgrade to an EVO 4G if/when it got cheaper, but it always stayed around $199, $150 the lowest. By now, i'd prefer to wait for a phone that is of the same or greater jump above EVO as it is above the Hero.

The consensus is that this will be hardware & software thread. Customizations (in-depth ROM flashes, skinning, icon sets, rooting etc.) will be in a separate customizations thread.
Ah, gotcha!

Come on CES, papa needs a new tablet!

Updated OP with new banner image.

Also--- More content is coming in the following days and week before new years. I hope to get Region one completely done by the end of Christmas weekend. If someone up North would be kind enough to send me your carriers and their android homepages, that would be wonderful! :D

Awesome thread!

Can't wait till CES to finally figure out what my next phone will be on AT&T. Frustrating that all of these rumors on the blogs are about phones for TMobile and Verizon, though!

I have heard this before, being inexperienced with the Nook, I have a few questions. Do you get the base android desktop on the nook? What about the Android marketplace? Can I download everything I could on my phone?

Basically, is the Nook just the Nook software when you want to read books, and then you hit home and get the base Android scheme?

Add these to the OP, please.

I want some badass android phone for ATT. Captivate is the best, but just not good enough yet.
Same. All I want is a pure google experience with a large screen (slide out qwerty would be appreciated) Add in tegra 2 and a front facing camera as well.

Why does AT&T have to suck so badly with phones?

Also, I hope Honeycomb is 3.0 and brings with it a sexy new UI.

At&t doesn't suck badly with phones, it's just they don't see a need to acquire high-end models with the iphone being their biggest seller. Of course when it goes multi-carrier, they said they will focus on more higher-end android models, obviously. This is obvious b/c the Moto Olympus is coming in Jan/Feb.

“At some point, as with all exclusive arrangements, the iPhone exclusivity deal ends and it’s important to support devices on all the major operating systems, particularly those at the higher end that tend to be more data intensive.”

Also, the biggest draw (imo) in staying with At&t is the freedom to use unlocked devices from Canada/Europe. It's not cheap, but you do get the best amount of choice.

Are the MUGEN replacement batteries any good? Just wondering wether replacing the Desire HD battery is worth it.

I read in many forums that Mugen and another site i lost the name, are the best sites for replacement batteries and very reliable. But the HTC Desire HD one at Mugen has just 100mah more than the stock one and is out of stock till January 8. HTC promised a better DHD battery (i hope at least 1400 or best 1500mah). The DHD is currently their flagship smartphone in Europe and sells well so i hope they put some support behind.

Here the link to the Mugen 1300mah.

We’ve seen several shots of what we presume to be the HTC Incredible HD over the last few days, and now, it looks like we have a firm date for the official unveiling. A mobile website owned by HTC that depicts a smartphone with a black cloak over it announces that the company will be “the first to 4G, again” on January 6th.

That's true, I'm just impatient. My 3G is on it's deathbed, and I just want a new phone.
Considering I'm on my parents' business plan, I'm unable to make any decisions about moving to a different carrier, so ive come to accept AT&T.
The Moto Olympus sounds extremely tempting, if not for BLUR. :|

Also, I know there's always the whole "there will always be a better phone" mantra, but if I were to upgrade to the Olympus, wouldn't I be missing out on the whole LTE craze considering ATT isn't rolling theirs out until 2H11?

I'm in the boat to get the Olympus on AT&T for a couple of reasons:

1) I need a GSM phone since I travel world wide and need to pop sim cards in and out.
2) Tegra 2 becoming the de facto platform for Android Honeycomb (both in smartphones and tablets)
3) The Olympus is said to be the first (of many) to have Gingerbread baked into it along with MotoBlur Lite which is what is found on the Droid X. After doing some research, popping in Launcher Pro will satisfy me with getting rid of their menu launcher.

Other than that, there are some rumors going around that come Honeycomb, launcher or skin UI's will not be part of the "main" OS. If that is the case, any upgrade post Gingerbread for any device, will give users freedom to use what they want.

It looks like the boys and girls from HTC and/or Verizon Wireless are trying to gin-up a little press for the yet-to-be-released HTC Incredible HD. Late yesterday, a series of leaked photos — that all seemed to happen within several hours of each other — began circulating the major technology blogs. Engadget, Gizmodo, Android Central, Slash Gear, Mobile Crunch, and your friends here at BGR were all sent a few small images showcasing one small piece of the HTC device.

Nexus One user here. Still happy with the phone (come on Gingerbread!) and really hoping the next Nexus phone is an HTC device that nods to the N1 design.

LG Optimus 2X dual-core Android phone hits Europe in January

lg-optimus-2x-clint.jpg

We already knew that it was coming to its home country of Korea in January. Now we know that LG's Tegra 2 Optimus 2X will bring its 4-inch display and 1080p video recording capability to the Android loving shores of Europe in the first month of 2011. The detail was hidden in a rather mundane press release touting the inclusion of 25 audio files (including 15 custom ringtones) from famed film composer Ennio Morricone, a man most recognizable for scoring those Sergio Leone "Spaghetti Westerns." While we're not sure how this oddball partnership materialized, we do know that there are two kinds of people in this world. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig? So we're not going to push it.

NEWS: Cowon finally gets in the Android business. Cowon D3 will use Android http://anythingbutipod.com/2010/12/the-cowon-d3-becomes-reality/

Eventually most everyone will. Microsoft is fighting a losing battle if they are interested in real relevance. iOS and Android are just too strong and while Symbian is trash at this point - Nokia ships an assload of devices. These things coupled together will keep Microsoft out of the top 3.

OP needs a link to the customizations thread. Otherwise, great job, everyone!

Since my thread didn't get any replies I'll ask here for help if that's alright. I've been looking to get a new phone and I've been wandering on whether to get an android phone, be boring and get an iphone, or get one of the new windows 7 phones.

My friend reccomended me an android phone but I don't really know them, so can anybody suggest a few good ones? I'm looking for one that has a full keyboard but it's not really a requirement if there are other better ones with only a virtual keyboard. I also want one that I can use here in Brazil with the sim cards here. I figure all sim cards are basically the same size so all that matters is the ability for me to change the sim cards. I'd also want to be able to customize the ringtones without having to pay for songs on some marketplace and just use my own music. I'm guessing that's possible since from what I've heard the android phones are all about customization and whatnot. Any help is greatly appreciated GAF :D

Even though I got my Droid X in June, I wish I could upgrade to that HTC Incredible HD just for the 4G. Come on Verizon, let us upgrade free. :lol

Rumors say. May will bring the best tablets.
The only thing about the part of the rumor that suggests that Google I/O is being reserved for something special in May 2011 is that we're still waiting on some of the special things they debuted at the LAST Google I/O. I'm looking at you, web-based Android Market.

Fixed.

These two are bullet points to the reasoning that Honeycomb is not 3.0.
I think once we have a good amount of tablets out there (running Honeycomb) Google's next step will be getting ready to release 3.0, with the above services. Plus, I'm sure the Music industry is not going to make it easy for Google to set up the Music streaming service.

I get the feeling that the music service is the hold up. Plenty of info leaking about how music studios don't like Google's digital locker idea and Google still working at a deal that makes everyone happy. When they showed the updated web Market at I/O 2010, it looked like apps and music were basically part of the same store interface. Froyo had everything they needed to pull it off (specifically, C2DM). There really shouldn't be any reason why they couldn't have launched the web-based app market by now, unless it's being held back by the music component.

If I'm right about this, personally I wish they'd just separate the two and give us the web-based Market for apps. Come back and add music when they manage to appease the studios. It's getting really silly when you have 3rd parties doing a better job of this.

If Grooveshark was cheaper, I'd definitely get it. Its pretty awesome on Chrome.

same here man, i love my X but if the specs on that new HTC is better i'll try my all to get it:D

Is 4G coverage actually good enough to consider nowdays? Kind of surprising how small the coverage is here in Finland right now.

This is a shot in the dark but I wouldn't be surprised if the Mecha/Incredible HD is rocking the QSD8672, 1.5 GHz dual core from Qualcomm. Its the right timeframe and it supports LTE.
