isn't the next GV update supposed to be released the same time as gingerbread?

not sure its definite but people are assuming so because of rumors of google voice with sip calling support coupled with gingerbread getting sip calling hooks built into the OS

im assuming too for root users that you'll be able to make calls over 3g/4g/edge and not just wifi?

Anyone have a good wrap up for everything announced so far?

Also, I hope a wifi version of that moto tab will be reasonably priced (unlike the iPad), hopefully at like $250 or less. :D

I'm not getting charged extra.

I believe there actually isn't a way for them to discern what device is using bandwidth. It may be that they just approximate using the actual usage amount, ie. if you just tether to browse a couple of webpages or read a few simple emails here and there they'll never know.

so far jack shit has been announced that I want, other then the atrix which I won't buy. I might just go get a G2 or a evo and call it a day.

Can someone explain to me the weird Android seperation? Android 3.0 is only for tablets and the phones are stuck at 2.something? WTF?

I don't think Google has officially came out and said that have they?

Honeycomb (3.0) is the first version of Android to be optimized for tablets. Phones will continue to be updated but no one really knows if Honeycomb is solely for tablets or if there are simply going to be two versions.

Honestly, I expect Google to make the Spring/Summer updates for tablets and the Fall/Winter updates for phones.

how would the honeycomb ui even work on a 4 inch device? i imagine that's why 2.4 is lined up. give us honeycomb, without the tablet look.

or i could be totally wrong and 3.0 comes to phones. who knows

i dont think its officially different yet, but think of it the same way the IPad was running a different version of IOS vs the Iphone

Those are not really that different though. I am also pretty sure both are on 4.2.

ftfy. There were previously on different firmwares, developed by different teams, with some different features, running different apps. Give Google time to sort it out before complaining.

I've been musing abit on that Moto Atrix laptop (and similar solutions), why not use the phone as the trackpad?

Why dock it at the rear, a position that makes the laptop solution cumbresome to carry around inbetween meetings/classes. The phone functionality (while carrying the laptop around with the phone "hid away") could be handled by connecting a handsfree with a small screeen attached that showed you the caller info. When the screen's flipped up that info simply goes into a popup window.

Superficially it seems like a nice solution, the laptop bottom part doesn't need to be much thicker than the phone to allow the dock, 2.5mm would most likely more than suffice. Add two spring loaded arms to hold the phone in place and there you go.

i'm pretty sure the SE Xperia Arc is going to be my next Android phone...this thing is sexy as fuck!
I am done with Erickson. They make good looking phones but there software upgrade path and support are both pretty abysmal.

As cool as it looks I would never buy a SE phone, they showed that they don't give a fuck and won't support their phones.

this. if honeycomb is tablet only, i still expect the train to merge again with the next big release. Its silly for any company to be developing two different similar trains of code for an extended period of time

Sure, Sony Ericsson still sucks at updating firmware, but it's not like you don't get one of the sexiest hardware in return. Frankly I do think Android is mature enough that you don't really lack any important functionality. What does Gingerbread bring? Better cut and paste? A retro TV turn off screen? Green-ish styling? What does Honeycomb bring? A better music app that's already solved by SE's own UI? Tablet stuffs that doesn't seem to transfer much to phones? What are the features you really must have?

I'm not arguing that manufacturers should not step up their firmware updating game, but people often just want the newest just because it is new.

I was thinking the same thing. Makes so much sense. Putting it on the back of the laptop dock is weird.

No one should complain, ever, even if they don't sort it out. They are just numbers that only tech nerds care about. They really mean nothing.

To be fair, I don't blame Sony Ericsson completely for it. Google has just as much blame to be placed for the mess that is software updates and manufacturer skins that the individual manufacturer has.
Google keeps claiming they won't step up and do anything because of the open nature of the platform. Well, when the openness of the platform actually begins to benefit users as opposed to carriers and OEM's, I'll be impressed.

Honeycomb looks really nice. It's really pulled me away from getting an iPad 2 and heavily leaning towards a Honeycomb tablet. Widgets, tabbed browsing, notifications, all look great. Really want to see more of it though but that 10 min video was nice. I hope it comes out polished. Apple really is going to have to pull out something significant to pull me back into considering an iPad.

Since I'm considering an Android tablet, can anyone tell me what my options are for reading comics on the device? Anything like ComicZeal?

Personally speaking Honeycomb doesn't have a wow factor.

Google is still following in Apple's footsteps for Android unfortunately. iPad didn't really have the wow factor either.

I'm still iffy on tablets in general, but I thought Honeycomb was at least a bit more interesting than the iPad. They look at least like they're making an effort to take advantage of the screen and not just with apps, but the UI in general. I still want to see more but it's at least promising. I really wonder what Apple is going to show in a month or two from now. Something that really makes the iPad unique or something that still makes it look like a larger iPhone.

Could Chrome OS become the standard "dock mode" for Android phones?

I suppose but I hope not. I'd like something with a little more functional, like what Motorola's done.

Maybe they'll add tabs to the safari UI and really bring the house down. Or maybe they'll save that as a nuclear option, for when they really need it.

Just like folders... was that the nuclear option to bring the house down?

Widgets are the nuclear option. Tabbed browsing is like a MOAB

If you really hate talk to this guy, why do you keep on starting arguments with him? :lol

Its like Packers fan going to a hardcore Bears bar to watch a football game.

EDIT: oh shit. Didn't see your avatar.

Widgets, taking better advantage of the larger screen size, and finally getting a notification system that's up to par with everyone else would be a great starting point. Tabbed browsing would just be icing on the cake.

He's just bitter that I was right and somehow has to get a dig in to make himself feel better rather than admit he was wrong.

I must say, I'm surprised how smooth it runs. Going by the leaked videos yesterday I thought it would be the usual Android experience with a 'kinda 60 fps-ish UI, but not really'. That makes it more appealing than QNX on the PlayBook or WebOS (at least so far).

Napoleonthechimp said:

Yeah, same here. I don't think the UI looks very good or pretty and I'm not a big fan of widgets.
Blu_LED said:
I'm kind of confused. Honeycomb is exclusive to tablets, or is that just what it's starting out on? Will we ever see it on phones?
Honeycomb was designed for tablets. That's all we know.

http://www.cyrket.com/search?q=comic&market=android - current apps.

Comixology just released their android app and I assume a big update for Honeycomb upon it's release.

Longbox announced at NYCC they're going to be on the Adam, would not be surprised to see an Android/Honeycomb version of their app as well.

People also really like this for now:

If we don't see ComicZeal itself, I'm sure we'll see something pretty similar. :)

ok, so that verizon video of honeycomb. he talks about dungeon defenders being better on the tablet. are we going to see tablet and phone versions of app's like apple now? :(

i still don't see why people are so unimpressed with honeycomb
