Angelina Jolie has a preventive double mastectomy

Great news for her as she won't have to worry about it. She is talking about how it's so simple to get the reconstructed breast done. Is that even covered by insurance? I'm sure it's really expensive.

It's Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie, I'm sure she'll manage.

Brave of her, she's incredibly wealthy though and can definitely undergo reconstructive surgery afterwards if she chooses.

edit: and she obviously chose to do it and good for her

Oh c'mon, I was joking. I was gonna make a Jennifer Aniston one but Tomb Raider seemed better suited for a gaming forum. Good for her though.

Scary stuff. My sister had a double mastectomy and chemo when she was 36. She's been in remission for 3 years now, but every headache, abnormal growth or CT scan is just scary.

Holy shit, both of them? I never heard of that before. She is pretty brave, hopefully she gets rid of 100% of the cancer cells and the fake breasts look good.

That's likely why she's coming forward- with the increased government intervention in Health Care, it's very possible she could help get this covered through legislation.

Sure, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. My initial reaction when I read she didn't have any active cancer was that she wanted implants and this was a way of doing it while making herself immune to scrutiny. But if the genetic tags are legit and accurate, the she probably made the right decision. Most women don't have that preventative option available.

The surgery sounds pretty invasive when you compare it to not having it done at all. Consider the fact that she had this done based on the possibility of developing cancer and not actually being diagnosed with it makes you wish there was an alternative to preventing breast cancer. Science will get there eventually, but for now this seems like the best option if you can afford it.

She doesn't have cancer, this was preventative. She had a 87% chance of getting cancer down the line before the surgery.

If I'm reading right, she didn't catch anything. She did it because she may be at risk later. Seems extreme.
The markers are extremely accurate to measure risk and many doctors encourage women to do this. It is a great alternative that gives patients the chance to get proper support and consider their choices without the pressure of a life threatening situation such as cancer.

Whoosh.....I was talking about for regular everyday folks. I was commenting on how she made everything so easy but with insurance possibly not covering the mastectomy and definitely not covering the reconstruction, it's unfortunately not an option for many in her situation.

Fuck breast cancer. My grandmothers on both sides have had it. My aunts have been lucky to remove anything that's started to look malignant early on, but shit gets scarier each year for them.

If the chance is so high, I can totally see the preference in just removing them and replacing them with implants just to get it over with. Minus all the insane stress and pain and treatment. :/

Angelina Jolie or not, I will say the following:

Fuck Cancer. My greatest hope is that science can provide a preventive measure or cure in the near future. 1 in 3 people will get cancer in their lifetime. That is a horrible statistic.

Wow . . . did the tabloid press show impressive restraint or was she really able to keep this completely secret?

I hope she has no complications and I'm glad she shared her story with the world to encourage others to seek diagnosis and treatment.

87% risk of cancer is insanely high - I think if anyone were in that position and had the money they'd have seriously considered doing it.

Kudos to her for speaking publicly about it as well, she probably could have gone on without revealing it considering she had the reconstructive surgery.

Not exactly a "good" story, but it's good that she's using her celebrity to spread awareness about how important that blood test can be.

Only thing is how does Insurance react to this

Pre-Emptive or Wait till a disease take over and pay out

I mean Angelina has the money to get whatever treatment she wants, but a lot of woman don't have the luxuries/amenities to be cared for like how she was

It's really crazy how some wealthy people get treatments and forget most won't get the same type of treatment due to many causes

One breast cancer the other I forgot what. =/. Although my mom's made it to 66 without any cancer so that's good news.

Ah, OK, stay healthy Lady!

You'd hope that they would cover pre emptive as it would surely be cheaper than having someone go through cancer treatment.

Very brave of her. Hopefully it all works out as planned.

Fortunately, most insurance companies will cover preventative mastectomies so long as specific conditions are met. However, how strict those conditions are will vary quite a bit.

Yeah but you hear all these horror stories of how insurances fuck over people after treatment and try to throw down gauntlets for people to go through just to get them coverage

I mean preemptive would be more beneficial, catch it before, and save money, but those who have shareholders and always want profits gonna go for it =/

That's good to know then

Never had Health Insurance my whole life, so it really is a fucking foreign thing for me

I think it's a bit unfortunate for her that such a personal and life-altering predicament becomes a matter of public scrutiny, but I'm glad to see her deal with it in a constructive way.

She wrote the article.

It is, but she chose to use it as a platform. Sort of made the best out of a bad situation. I think Christina Applegate did something similar.

Dang. This surgery is incredible. Pretty much elimates the risk with little to none change in quality of life. Western medicine yo.

It also depends on the state. Some will even cover the reconstruction afterward.

People talking about the cost apparently missed the part at the end where she said that lower income women are getting fucked by not having access and that needs to change.

This is great for her.
Great for awareness.
Great for an important national conversation.

And great because its like she took a snapshot of her breasts at the perfect moment and they will stay like this forever now. Thank you based medicine.

I know, that's why I said I'm glad to see her deal with it in a constructive way i.e. writing an article and explaining the situation herself. Had she not written it, I'm sure there would be a National Enquirer mag at your local grocery store with "Jolie on death watch! Brad Pitt doesn't care - seen with other woman!" emblazoned on the cover. She dealt with a very unpleasant scenario in a very tactful way. I applaud her for it.

I dont get it... her risk of cancer was high, but she didnt have it, couldnt she just have gone to check ups every 6 months or something and had them scanned >.<?
