Animal Crossing 3DS trailer

My first experience with the series was Wild World for the DS, can anyone tell me if the N64 version was better than that garbage? Was Wild World considered one of the "good ones" in the series?

The game was nice for the first day or so, but the town grew too quickly (and then hardly ever changed) and there didn't seem to be much variety in fish/plants/dialog. Especially dialog. It felt like every NPC would just cycle through 3 dialog choices. It makes everyone in the game feel like a robot.

In short:

I'm thinking of picking this up, and I want to believe Wild World was just one of the crappy ones in the series much like City Folk. Was it, or is this series simply not for me?

Well, the N64 version is only in Japanese.

The GC version was actually called AC+, so it was supposed to be (and is) an improved version of the N64 one.

Every game after that? Same game, with less features. It's an insult to consumers.

As someone else mentioned above, it makes sports games look good. At least they dont always cut features (although do you guys remember when Fifa had indoor soccer? And how there was weather and it went away for a decade?)

I remember a time on the Nintendo 64 that people wanted this series so much, and now people don't care as much.
Personally I have never tried a single Animal Crossing game.

me and the wife love us some Animal Crossing! I showed her the trailer and she is very excited!

I wish we could get a release date

Animal Crossing is my personal Zen Garden!

Well, to be fair, this is that 4th/5th version of the game and they have changed very little about it.

So basically every version after the GC one sucked? I liked Wild World for a bit. It was calming, but it felt so repetitive after just a few days. There were only a few things to plant, and a few activities to do.

I must admit that after watching the trailer on the 3DS, the AC world looks nice in 3D.
But as others have said, if you have played any of the previous games there is always this oppressive sense of deja-vu.
I played the Animal Crossing for the Gamecubebut couldn't get into the DS one or City Folk.
A vastly improved online experience and heightened sense of community for this 'communication game' would make it more compelling package.
Unfortunately, Nintendo seems perennially lost when it comes to what customers want in online.
So it'll be pretty easy to pass on this.

I might get this. I didn't play City Folk much but I played Wild World a ton. I think Animal Crossing works better on a handheld.

Most people consider Wild World to be the best entry in the series.

There were some things in GC that were missing (island to travel to, e-card reader features, holidays).

So, apart from Holidays, it was definitive. Wii version was basically Wild World, with holidays, fucked up palette editor (shirts/hats), some stupid "City" and other non-features.

The best bit was right at the E3 it was revealed at, someone asked, I think one of the developers whether they were going to fix the connection issues of the DS version's online, and they basically replied, "lol, nope." It was very comforting to know they were going full steam ahead on a product, knowing full well of a big issue with the last one and intending to ignore it.

Wow.

WOW!

I can't wait for random disconnects!

Treating the IP like Sega would, good show.

Heh, that's pretty much how I feel. It's a great game to relax with.

So basically I should stay far away from the series...

A shame too. The series seems like it has potential. If only there were more than like 4 things to do, and the NPCs said more than 3 unique things.

edit: Actually it wouldnt be so bad if I could just take long breaks from the game without everything dying and all my neighbors leaving.

I love trailers like this. I don't need all the extra hoopla, CG, musical score, etc in the background...just show me footage of the game and its different functions.

"To those Animal Crossing fans, I just would like them to know that there's progress and we should be able to offer a new download movie soon [eShop Trailer]. As for features and specs of the game, I can't go into too much detail, but players will be able to arrange their furniture the way they like, and we'll be offering new networking experiences."

Yay?

Nay, until they actually show something fresh. Little things like trousers and swimming are all well and good, but what this franchise needs is a massively expanded set of network features that allow for far less stilted play with friends. It needs regular content updates, not just furniture, but new dialogue, villagers and holidays as well. It needs to offer something new every day you play the game. I'm sure they've got something cooking, the scathing reaction to City Folk and the muted sales will have seen to that.

I'm honestly surprised that a company that still puts their focus on 'innovation' and new things would let Eguchi make the same game over and over again especially since City Folk and Wii Speak didn't set the world on fire like Wild World did. They also take quite a while to develop so I wonder what the catch is. Do they start from scratch with every version or is the Animal Crossing team just Eguchi and a couple of interns?

I personally liked how despite the city aspect being the big focus of its title, afterwards they basically went "It's the stuff that wasn't in the DS version!" considering what was shown.

Have they said anything more about you replacing that corrupt tortoise being the mayor? Outside of the dog assistant/stalker of course.

If you become the mayor... does that mean... he died? :(

Well, it is possible... I mean, if he pulled a Dwyer during the impeachment hearings. Or maybe the stresses of the job will drive your character, paranoid even. Soon you'll get old and, feeling guilt from years of corruption and mad proclamations, start wearing tortoise shells to protect yourself from the bullets of potential assassins. At the end, your character will change his/her name... revealing that this whole game was a prequel to Animal Crossing all along.

Or Tortimer probably just retired.

I considered Wild World the best iteration out of the franchise so I can tell you right now to stay far away from Animal Crossing if that's how you feel about WW.

My entry game was the one on Gamecube and I enjoyed it immensely. I didn't mind the fact Wild World was exactly the same game except with wifi features minus the awesome emulator games on the GC version because it was portable. I DID mind the fact that City Folk was the same game as the Gamecube version since I didn't need to buy the same game (and I didn't). The 3DS version needs a whole lot more features for me to get back into the series. And I really want to, really Nintendo.

On a side note, is anyone else peeved with this trend with incorporating Miis into every game? Completely unnecessary in this game much like it was unneeded to put Miis in NSMBMii. Just an awful idea.

It's not for you. All the Animal Crossing games are pretty much the same with a few minor differences, if one didn't suit your tastes then a different one probably won't either. And Wild World was arguably the best they've put out.

I played the OG GC game and Wild World like crazy, to the point that I felt content to put aside the series until it made a significant leap in either presentation or content. Two games later, and I'm still waiting. The trailer just screams "yup.. it's Animal Crossing," and not in a good way. I get they don't want to rock the boat too hard, but there's got to be some sort of creative spark in there to keep fans coming back.

Me and the lady spent so much time on Wild World on our DSes back in Christmas of ... 2005? Such an excellent game. She is actually waiting until this comes out to buy a 3DS.

I just... I know it is going to be exactly the same game with maybe one added feature. Oh you can swim now. Like the guy up there said, come on! Let us build more than one house, access our VC titles in game. Add stamp and coin collections, let us get on a boat and find other little places to fish. GIVE MORE TO DO. Let us have a garden! Moar.

Hopefully the get rid of the whole "Don't walk on the grass unless you want your town to be a desert" feature.

Oh my goodness that drove me nuts. That had to have been a glitch.

I always thought it was ridiculous that you couldn't have decorations outside your house. Why can't I have patio furniture? WHY?

Everything needs interactivity too. Let me throw furniture outside so I can have a couch out there. Have animals interact more. The possibilities are limitless, but they're being lazy.

Wild World was a perfect sequel (despite ditching holidays). I'm waiting for the perfect sequel to Wild World.

Meh... As far as Animal Crossing goes it seems like it's a bit different than the other ones but for any other series this would be completely abysmal. I can't comprehend how little effort Nintendo puts behind these games considering the sales and popularity for the DS version as well as the animated movies. With that said we really can't tell much from a minute trailer because it's animal crossing. I played the GCN version ,my sister and cousin enjoyed it a lot and played it for a long time, and I thought it had a good core concept that would hopfully be much better expanded in future iterations. However, the 64/GCN/DS/Wii version have all been quite similar and I wouldn't be shocked if this did little new as well. I'm more shocked that apparently there are dev teams working on it for a long time.

Some of the changes were not so great, agreed. That one in particular went against a lot of what I thought Animal Crossing was supposed to be. I think I got a bit burnt out on the Gamecube and Wii versions being so similar too. I'm willing to give the eventual Wii U version a chance, it's probably enough to sell the system to me if it isn't a carbon copy, but I'm not about to get carried away now.

The trailer is nice and mellow, and the bit at the end with the diving seemed neat, hopefully it gets it right.

If you check out the 3D trailer, you begin to understand why it still employs the fixed perspective. In 3D, it really looks like your peering into another world.

I'm actually kind of excited about this one.

Grats on the modding! Now, don't let that power go to your bald shiny tattooed head.

My wife loves this game, and I watch her play it sometimes. It is a neat little game, and it is very relaxing. I'll help her catch fish and shit while she is cooking or doing other shit. She gets so frustrated that certain fish and bugs are rare as shit and just wants to catch them.

I don't think she'll get a 3DS just for the game. It does look real nice though.

If Nintendo truly evolves the series and adds meaningful new content including online features for this 3ds version it could become a true system seller. The AC series is already a very successful IP with lots of casual appeal. The right additions with the right marketing could really light a fire under the 3ds sales. It could be like Nintendo's version of farmville and those other facebook games, get people addicted, causing them to forget about real life, forgetting to eat, and spending crazy money on dlc (would Nintendo do in-game micro-transactions? I hope not).

I mean, this game is just perfect for dlc. The whole game is about the items you acquire. Nintendo could make a mint with dlc for this game.

True if the game is able to tap into that addictive, must own everything mentality but because I love AC and like having money actually in my wallet, I don't want to see any sort of paid dlc for this game.

I enjoy animal crossing to a degree. I was able to get every item in acww, almost every item in the original but barely any in accf. I'm sure I'll get this one, but they really need to add more crap. I can't play the exact same game for a 4th time.
Since that won't happen, they could at least add some of the various suggestions I've seen here and one other thing. Storage. Actual storage of items you cannot buy from the catalog. I'm so tired of using letters and cabinets or whatever else they're trying to pass off as real item storage.
In addition, I want more than 15 slots in what I can carry. You need to carry around the axe, etc so after that, you have like 9? slots left I think. It's just dumb. And if nintendo delivers items again via wifi, please don't make me login every time to receive the item. I missed so many and I stopped caring after awhile. Just make receiving items a more fluid experience.
kthxbye
