Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival Announced (Wii U, Mario Party System, Holiday 2015)

What the hell Nintendo? We wanted Animal Crossing on Wii U, but not like this. Not like this!

Wait, who wanted a traditional Animal Crossing on Wii U? People were seriously pining for them to make the same game with only slight tweaks again? I love the Animal Crossing series, but it really wasn't that long ago that New Leaf came out.

I do not understand the outrage on this one. It's a better use of the series name right now. It also doesn't look like Mario Party - looks more like an Itadaki Street game.

Me. I'm actually not that big a fan of actually playing the mainline games and Home Designer and this are both more appealing. Animal Crossing is better suited for handhelds and a Wii U AC would probably just turn out like City Folk anyway. If this actually does play more like Fortune Street than that is just icing on the cake.

Why? Explain to me what's appealing about it?

They should use the Monster Hunter formula. Make a new console game and use that as a base for the next handheld one, not the other way around.

They did that with Wild World (Taking the GameCube game and improving on it despite the inferior hardware); Of course they did toss out collectable NES games in the process, but they definitely made up for it come New Leaf.

Then City Folk tried to be Wild World on consoles, so, that was a case of Nintendo not getting the hint, really. Now look at where we are. :L

Biggest disappointment of the show for me.. I don't like Mario Party at all... Why not a proper Animal Crossing game??? Fuck this game

See, I LIKE Mario Party, and it was still the biggest disappointment of the show.

It has Animal Crossing's charm, but I fail to see how this can be applied in a competitive multiplayer game like this. It's cute but it doesn't look fun, like it's way too passive.

If they include anything like the mini-game in Nintendo Land I might bite, though.

A huge disappointment for me. I was excited for 3-4 seconds until I saw the tiles and pushed myself back in the couch in despair. I was really looking forward to a home console iteration since we're two people using the Wii U and we could have had our own houses. Only one of us owns New Leaf (me) and that game has been shelved since Fall 2013. While I agree AC works better on a handheld, they could have made use of the gamepad, brought back the separate accounts as well as improved on New Leaf's features to make an awesome home console game. I'm a fan of Fortune Street, but I didn't ask for this. Will still buy the Nook amiibo.

When they tapped that amiibo I was like, "HERE IT COMES, BABY!" And that quickly turned into disappointment.

The game doesn't even look like it has mini-games. I kept waiting for something...just rolling dice? C'mon now.

This really made me upset. I LOVE New Leaf, and I still play it. But MAN, I would've preferred a City Folk style of port to this.

I just realized the Amiibo Festival bundle will probably come with exclusive amiibos and cards. You know, amiibos and cards that aren't sold separately and can be used with Happy Home Designer to unlock exclusive content... In the end, collectors and huge fans will be forced to purchase this game. We're screwed.

this would have been acceptable as part of animal crossing wii u even with needing to buy amiibo and winning a nominal amount of bells and getting to hang out with characters you normally don't get to

as it's own game it's the worst part of amiibo and the worst part of modern gaming mixed into one stinky pile of shit

Yeah, this would have worked well as an activity within a proper AC game. Hell, even let people customize the board and all that.

I'm curious to know if the Amiibo cards (which have been toted more with Happy Home Designer) are going to be used with this game, too.

Curious observations:

The amiibo cards seem to have references to the board game elements of Amiibo Festival (aside from cards naturally fitting in with a board game theme).

Even though the game has random dice rolls, each of these cards has a specific dice face on it. Would scanning these cards give you a specific die result as a powerup or something?

It seems confirmed by this part of the trailer:

There's definitely something going on with die results on cards

Then there's the other features of the cards: the rock-paper-scissors icons. Since these come in booster packs of 3 cards each, I wonder if they're going to pack a rock, a scissor, and a paper in each pack.

And finally, the oddest part of the cards is the stats on the bottom - each card seems grouped by BG color, and each BG has an icon for something on the bottom, with two numbers (like an attack / defense, or whatever this could correlate to).

Yes, they work. The game even comes bundled with three of those cards, and the box art shows characters using both the figure amiibo and the card amiibo.

Also, in the west, booster packs are 5 standard cards and 1 special card.

Oh shit! hahahah, I didn't even consider that!

What if our birthdates....were our attack and defense?

...I get this is like Mario Party, but where are the mini-games?

It seems like there are encounters, but not minigames. Really not sure how that will work.

It seems like there is also a stalk market going on, with landing on different spaces making the prices fluctuate.

If this game has a way to mitigate dice rolls (which is the most abhorrent thing about these types of games), I....might be in

Did people watch the trailer? It's not like Mario Party at all. It's an event board game, closer to Fortune Street. It's not a mini game fest.

I just watched the trailer again and I didn't see a single bit of user interaction. Pieces moved to a slot, some dumb text was displayed, and then it moved on. If there is more to the game then Nintendo did a terrible job with their trailer.

I'm part of those stupid fans who want Animal crossing HD (just look at MK8 graphics *drools*)

I felt hurt but not trolled and I had to buy back animal crossing 3DS to fix my disapointement.

Animal crossing, just look at what you did to me. Never I wanted to buy the same game in HD so much.

As someone who has never played Fortune Street can you describe the difference to Mario Party esp multiplayer aspect?

Super disappointed there's no mainline AC. Was hoping for more online features and more content. Still going to pick it up because AC is my favorite franchise, but damn. At least I can play it with my dad, who can only play Mario Party, Fortune Street, and Wii _____ games.

It's like Monopoly but with stocks. Basically it's completely different apart from featuring Mario and being a board game. Fortune Street is one of my favorite multiplayer games.

Y'know, I dig the idea of transforming Nintendo games into new experiences, I just think this fucked up the transformation process. No one wants a party game out of Animal Crossing! The idea I've always had for an AC game (or spin-off) is to have an adventure focus. So for this spin-off, you could have it be that you and the villagers go camping in the forest, allowing you to explore and find cool stuff. It would almost be like a Zelda game without the combat, where your exploration abilities are limited by your bravery and stamina (both of which would be upgradeable). This way AC fans still get something that has the spirit of AC and the feel of it, but with something totally new.

And the rule of thumb is that because I came up with the idea, it'll never happen. :[

I know the bundle comes with amiibos and the set of cards. is the card set complete tho? I'm never opening Isabelle but I wanna use Isabelle without buying a second amiibo

New Leaf isn't that old guys

It's not time for a new Animal Crossing just yet.

Wild World released in Japan in 2005, early 2006 in the west, City Folk followed that in 2008.

New Leaf released in Japan 2012, early 2013 in the west. A Wii U game was due to be followed for a 2015 holiday release. So yeah, that's why a lot of people expected it this year, but instead we got this 'fuck you' from Nintendo.

I'm not ready to dismiss this just yet, it might end up being a fun little game in its own right. Having it instead of a shiny new Animal Crossing sucks for sure, though.

I'm really bummed about no AniCro WiiU, but after having the betrayal settle in a bit:

1. After all the ridiculously awesome stuff they showed off in Happy Home Designer today, it's clear they're using that game as a testbed for features in future Animal Crossing games, and to tide us over until the next release. Not only does that game look much cooler than I expected (I thought it was just a home-designer minigame), it makes me excited for when the next Animal Crossing actually does come out.

2. I hate that it exists instead of an Animal Crossing WiiU game (especially after the Mario Kart 8 track that was gorgeous), but this game looks cute. The amiibo figurines are really nice and the game itself looks like an adorable version of The Yawhg. Definitely going to be playing it with friends.

I'm disappointed, I really am, but at least they're clearly releasing this stuff to buy time while they work on the next game, instead of the disaster the Metroid franchise has become.

I feel like I might be an idiot, because I don't get it. Like, from what I could tell in that video, you tap the amiibo, move X spaces, some text appears (or maybe a picture!) with some random change to the stats, next player goes. Then whoever got the most random happy points wins the happiness. Surely there's more?

What do you actually do? Wow, that feels like a dumb question to have to ask.

I'm wondering that too tbh. Looks like a whole like of nothing.

Hopefully there will be a treehouse live which goes through things.

I also hope there is a tap once per game mode as I hear tapping when it is your turn got tiring in MP10.

Given the phsical release in a cynical way I hope the 3 cards are exclusive or random (given they are face down could be this) otherwise they going to be like 1st edition Machamp (the only 1st edition card worth less than the normal one).

I just realized the Amiibo Festival bundle will probably come with exclusive amiibos and cards. I have to wonder what happens to the eShop version...if there is going to be an eShop version. I imagine it could be a lot cheaper. Assuming the characters/cards are exclusive it is a shame they can't offer cards & amiibo only pack for digital owners via a specialist store (actually Nintendo Germany and Nintendo Germany only did this just this when Kid Icarus Uprising when it came out on the eShop you can buy the stand and some AR cards for €5, the eShop release was also €5 cheaper than physical RRP but seeing as most people are not German it is not terribly helpful).

That's the point. If it actually WAS like Mario Party with minigames, I might have been ok with it. This looks incredibly boring.

I'm not familiar with Fortune Street - what types of user interaction are in it? From the trailer for this game, it looked like all you did was press A to hit a dice block and then just passively have your bell balance shift depending on what random nonsense text came up from the space you landed on. But there is surely - SURELY - more to the game than that.

I really hope Treehouse Live does a segment on this -their time with Happy Home Designer (another game I was really down on, since the Animal Crossing fanatic in me was feeling forsaken) made it actually look really neat. I'm holding out a fool's hope that the same can happen for amiibo festival if they go in depth/do a better job of explaining it than the trailer during the direct did.

I'm a huge Animal Crossing fan and I honestly didn't want a normal AC game on Wii U. I like the portability of the 3DS version of AC and that's honestly the only way I want to play it now. I'm actually pretty happy about them using the franchise for a different game type. Plus, I get AC amiibos, which I didn't think I would get when they talked about the cards.

Animal Crossing just works better on handheld devices.

You want an Animal Crossing for your WiiU? You get it in the form of a spinoff. Did you all really expect a mainline AC game after what has been said in this regard?
Considering the series started on consoles, yes, I expected a mainline game.
