Do GAFStaff just find animated avatars annoying? If they're under the current 50kb size limit then it wouldn't be a size issue so I guess there's another issue.

animated avatars are so distracting

I wouldn't risk this until I get Evilore confirmation. :p

Plus, with the limit, it's pretty useless for anything but sprites anyway.

I think that's perfect. Small, understated animations that aren't a burden on the eyes or the network.

There were plenty of poorly looped five frame gifs before the change, the only different now is that they would be even lower quality.

edit: oh god it's already happening

I'd prefer if it was a user option.
Specify normal or animated, and only show the later if it's toggled in the user control panel.
Having an option doesn't solve every problem. Too many options and you get Facebook's privacy settings.

I hate animated avatars but this is the one exception. GOAT

You can also just rename a avatar.gif to avatar.png and the system will accept it and play the animated gif.

But animated avatars of any format are not allowed. Using an animated avatar can get you banned or have your avatar privileges removed.

Installed the Chrome extension.

I think animated avatars are fine, within reason: if there was a way of limiting the frames through file size or something, it could mean people could just add nice effects to their avatars without much server strain.

i just went to add that chrome extension and it says:

This extension can access:
Your data on all websites
Your tabs and browsing activity

what does that entail, exactly?

btw, i don't miss animated avatars at all
