Anime cliches that need to die.

Nuke it all from orbit. Find a planet where anime wasn't invented.

No, there is good anime if you look for it, and still tons of untapped potential as far as the medium goes. Problem is that all the big money is in the creepy, tropey and teasing stuff so it's loaded with tons of crap.

Hopefully the Ace Attorney anime is legit.

Pointless gender swap stuff.
Teen couple having some sort of kid, be it human, an alien, robot, AI, whatever
Main protag being a loner with a shit personality that really nobody should like, but everyone does.

Ugh! I especially hate it when said couple are a pair of friggin' 17 year olds while the kid's like 12 and she (its usually a "she" because oniiiiiii-chan) keeps saying she sees herself as their daughter. Or at the ery least that she sees the main female lead as a mom. A mom in all her 17 years of wisdom, of course, who's only 5 years older than said kid character!

Also scenes like this:

Bad guy: *laughs evilly after seemingly beating the protagonist*
Good guy: "Your power is indeed incredible."
Bad guy: *smiles smugly*
Good guy:" However..."
Bad guy: *smile disappears, eyes widen*
Good guy: "I've been holding back"
Bad guy: *shocked face usually followed by "What?!"*

When presented well, this kind of thing is great!

I said it already, but I do it again:

The overused "oniiiiiiiiiiiii-chan!?" makes my skin crawl. I know it's one of the more normal things, but the way the characters try to sound cute while saying this by pitching their voice even more, and making it way longer than its supposed to be is awful.

But that's just me personal. Overall I agree with most stuff here (expect for the Shounen-battle stuff. That's cheesy as hell, and I love that)

I love a lot of these tropes but yeah some are overused.

Ones I do not like

- Whoops I tripped and grabbed your boobs. There were like 3 series that did this in their first episodes this season...wrrrryyyy

- Reaction Faces. I love One Piece but goddam it, Toei. It is generally done as padding and it shows.

- Wimpy MCs. Very few shows pull it off well where that character's growth from wimp to G status is done well.

- Bland MCs that somehow had everyone...and I mean everyone on their dick. If you are going to make a Mary Sue/Gary Stu at least make them interesting and cool. Most shonen leads are by nature potent gods but they can't just be a random boring ass dudes.

- Mistimed Humor. Humor is hard as hell, especially across language and cultures...but there is a time and place for it.

Really hate when the main character does obviously stupid things that then happens to be the right thing and make everything okay, even if he or she didn't know that. Like punching a person because yolo, but then that person is actually evil or not following a reasonable plan that turns out to be bad unforseen circumstances. Let the protagonist act smart on the knowledge he has, not on coincidence, goddamnit.

The loveable stalker is a pretty bad one.

"Oh that wacky stalker, they just love them too much!"

I've had a friend who dealt with a legit stalker. It's actually pretty scary in real life, not something to be glorified.

Dots or lines for noses. Even my favorite artists(Murata Yusuke) and studios(Kyoto Animation) are guilty of this.

Teasing a yuri couple, then PSYCH! no they're actually straight and want to hook up with one of the male characters. Ex:
Sound! Euphonium
.

This can't die fast, hard or soon enough.

The no one becomes a couple until the end of the series all of a sudden everyone is paired up even if it makes no sense.

Also flashbacks or character development flashbacks for bad guys right before they die.

The schoolgirl who is late for school who runs out of the house with a giant piece of toast in their mouth.

In their haste they bump into strange looking schoolboy who looks lost. She falls into him/he accidentally grabs her breasts/sees her panties.

She unfurls a volley of abuse. Later in class that day the lost schoolboy is introduced as a transfer student.

She instantly becomes tsundere.

I'm wondering, was Avatar (The Last Airbender) show popular in Japan?
I mean, it was basically a shounen anime except (american) it didn't fall into any anime tropes and actually had a storyline that went somewhere.

EDIT: Never mind, I just found a trailer for the second season. With this terrible a dub I wouldn't have paid it any mind either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlbn2zUQACQ

Don't know if this is a cliche' for sure but it's quite annoying from Bleach & Naruto. When Everytime the main story starts to get good they throw in "a side story" right in between the episodes. Very tiring and makes me want them to get to the point.

I really that all the shows are animated. Like, really? You're doing this too? Have a little bit of creativity. I don't think I've seen a single anime without this trope.

Yeah I've wondered the same thing. And I'd argue Legend of Korra is even more anime-ish and mature (with way better production values) that's almost indistinguishable from real anime in style (not so much content because of a lack of oniiiiiiiii-chan shit). You'd think this could make Avatar/Korra popular in Japan wouldn't it? Or a lack of pandering to otaku, fan service, and high school setting hurt it?

I'm only half kidding about that last part.

Talking all self important and pretentious... with closed eyes.... no one doest that...

I do

but seriously one reason why I like Watamote is because she is such a different female character. The fact her whole mental state is observed rather than just being a piece of eye-candy or prize for a male protagonist makes it one of the best anime i've seen.

I don't think it's popular in Japan, but it's probably more to do with the fact the Fire Nation are the bad guys and are transparently based off of Imperial Japan. Don't know about Korra.

I don't think that would be a problem anime have plenty of evil japanese government in all times and it's not that rare that the protagonist is non-japanese, especially in fantasy worlds (in that case if course the equivalent of Japan).

Magi is doing good and that has arabs as protagonists, Arlan has persian turks and Seven Deadly Sins has british people. It doesn't matter that much to anime. People are mostly japanese when it's set in Japan where - let's face it - most people are japanese.

I hate 99% of all the stuff mentioned in this thread but this is awesome rofl

It's just my speculation, but evil modern governments are one thing. Basing it off of Imperial Japan specifically, is another. There aren't really a lot of anime that like to go to that time period.

"Oh no, I've caught a cold/bug/the flu while running around outside in the rain without a coat on. Now I'm indisposed and completely bed-ridden for the next few days. Good thing my love interest is here to nurse me back to health by putting a wet flannel on my forehead."

THE WORST!

If I see one more motherfucking character sneeze after someone mentions their name.......

As far as I can tell, Japanese people have a crippling inability to say anything to somebody they like other than their name under their breath while said person is walking away/breathing heavily after some outburst/destroying robots by using their hidden transformation powers/etc.

I mean, going by anime, anyway.

Also, I frequently stop watching an anime once I get to the "oh man the whole gang is so hungry we gotta work some odd jobs because we're so hungry hey oh man that bakery smells so yummy oh god why am i so hungry if only we had parents to cook us some food hey do we have any food left nope cuz i'm shaking the food container and nothing is coming out oh my god who could've seen this coming now we're all hungry and we waited until the last minuted guess we gotta work odd jobs which luckily pay same day or else we'd really be hungry hahahaha" episode.

Beta ass fuck male protagonist in harem shows.

"oh my god this goddess of a babe is naked in my bed right next to me and clearly would not object to banging right this moment... better be all scared and flustered at it for the tenth time!"

GTFO with that shit

Too long intros.

And what's up with the super calm and chill outros?

I know it reduces the length per episode, but it's not like many series milk still-shots for all they're worth anyway.

Having a serious talk standing back to back. And often at some distance.

I just want to see one series show how silly this is by having a character complain that he can't hear the other or something.

Definitely harem and moe. It's a piece of shit cliche that's running rampart in not just anime, but japanese video games as well.

Oh yea, and idols. I cannot stand idolization. Just no.

Yes, the shy away from depicting the era too directly, notable exceptions like Night Raid 1931 and several movies nonwithstanding, but we have stuff like Ghost in the Shell are clearly aiming at that era and the theme of false supremacy and superiority of people based on genes or heritage are very common.

The large openings are cool, I always get disappointrd bythe ten to thirty second jingles of western shows :(

Yugioh Abridged made that joke and it was glorious. I think it was at the beginning of the Anubis movie. I don't think that counts, but everyone should have seen yugioh abridged anyways.

That's a cultural thing. I guess you could call it a trope but I wouldn't really count it against strictly anime no more than I'd count someone saying "speak of the devil" against western media.

I'd have to say the dude that states he must protect girls because, well... They're girls. Doesn't matter if oftentimes these chicks are head and shoulders stronger than the dude (see History's Greatest Disciple) or at the least strong in their own right, he's got to "protect" them.

Harem and moe abuse is the cancer of anime. We could have had so many really great shows if those things were not a thing.

Also resetting romantic relationships like nothing happened in a previous season or episode. Shit is infuriating. Like you watch a season of a relationship developing and then they throw that shit out the window (AiYori)

Kennichu is one of the better bad examples because the series is self-aware that Myu is actually much stronger than him since she got more talent and a longer history of training, which is actually an important thing for the managa. Jarring fanservice aside, the manga makes a good job having girls not actually be weaker because they are girls. Not even that one Yami master since that one was out of choice.

It's worse when women get degraded into healing or utility positions or to the point where they lack behind so much behind the male characters that they really constantly need help. And then there's of ciurse the category that fights only against other women and get their clothes shred or wet during the fight.

But there are a lot of positive examples of strong, fighting women in anime and those really appeal to me, like Black Lagoon or Gintama.

Fucking laserguided amnesia all the time in all kind of anime. stahp!

When the final fight against a boss ends with a clash with both characters using their "strongest attack" and the villian is defeated. Also I would love to have animes where villains "win" and everything doesn't end on a good note for the good guys.
