My favorite show as a kid. Captain Tsubasa:

I was too young when they showed a lot of the 80s animes, I only vaguely remember watching them:

I was a bit older and Mashin Hero Wataru was a popular anime where I lived, so it was my favorite anime, and also Mister Ajikko (cooking anime) which I found hilarious.

These were the cartoons of my childhood, running non stop on local tvs.

We're talking 80s anime and not a mention of Akira? Or are we just doing series and not movies? Saw Project Ako so I assumed movies too.

Akira and Ako were my firsts. Really changed my perception of cartoons. I was probably way too young to have watched Akira (maybe 4th grade?) and I can remember not really getting it but loving every single second of it. Thought about it for weeks. Still one of my all time favorites.

For people who may be looking for good action series with humor should check out these series.

Any other series of that nature would you recommend?

Oh right, Jungle Book Shonen Mowgli! Best animated adaptation of the book by far - none of that Disney-fication shit.

american sensitivity most likely stop a lot of those from coming in the US..
in France we watched most of those, when i came to FL most kids were watching Tom & Jerry couple years after the DBZ craze hit. that was in 1993.

Seen several faves mentioned (Touch, Patlabor, Ikkoku, Gatchaman, etc), so I'll throw in Crusher Joe and Venus Wars. Loved the Galaxy Express movies when I'd catch them on USA every Saturday or whatever it was. Those were the days.

They Were Eleven is a surprisingly good movie. I'd highly recommend it.

I haven't seen the movie, but it's based on a manga by Hagio Moto, which is one of the few works she has translated into English. I recommend reading everything by her if you can find it!

I haven't read the manga, but I got the general impression that it improved on the weakest aspect of the anime, in my opinion, by better giving a sense of the developing of relationships and tensions between the individuals on the ship. It wasn't done poorly in the movie, but it could have been handled much better with an additional 20-30 minutes.

The bulk of the anime that I own happens to come from this era, heh.

City Hunter is another pretty good one.

It's a show that somehow manages to be light-hearted and badass all at at the same time. Good, mostly self-contained stories. Think Miami Vice meets Lupin the Third. Great stuff.

Was pissed this wasn't in the OP with all those other Mecha. Dizer is fucking amazing and Duke becomes Nagai's best lead, not to mention he has crazy super human powers. Need an update so bad, christ even Gaiking and Steel Jeeg got one, where is Dizer and Shin Great? Nagai? WHERE????

We didn't get Grendizer in my country, only Mazinger :P

These were two of the first animes I ever saw.

I don't know how they hold up. I liked them when I was a kid, but I haven't seen them in probably 25 years.

ffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkk yeah

UNICO, motherfuckers!

These were actually rereleased fairly recently on DVD by Eastern Star. I have watched them several times since then and they are as trippy and fucked up as I remembered.

Attack No1!

There were more, like City Hunter, Orange Road (Johnny y sus amigos! hahaha) but they werent shown often, or didnt get a huge following for one reason or another. Back then it was all pretty hazy and different local channels usually didnt carry over from state to state.

oh man, the wave of nostalgia from this thread. So many good series mentioned!

Used to own VHS copies of the lodoss wars OVAs (my first buy), but seen a lot of the others. I'll need to go rebuy Akira at some point.

Still need to see North Star and Saint Seiya. at least with north star I can watch over at CR... cant say the same about Seiya :/

Saiya is a bit hard to watch these days, it makes the padding and charging up of DBZ episodes seem tame by comparison ... and the downside is that the manga sucks, so yeah
