I love female protagonists. Don't understand why they have to be 50% of all game protagonists though. Us ladies are fully capable of playing a man in a video game. Sometimes I even make my character in customizable games a dude just for variety.

But the companies behind them have big support and fund them with ads, so it is easier to blame some niche Japanese games who were not even created for export in the first place.

I feel like presenter wise E3 has had a disproportionate amount of women for years. I'm not against it, it's just plain to see that they've made the effort to increase female presenters. Just because it's not a 50/50 split doesn't mean it's still not commendable, but with people like Sarkeese, when you give an inch they look to take a mile, so it'll never be enough...

So she heard only 15% is female-led, so she decided to start counting.
She counted and got 9% females, vs 32% males. Assuming the rest of the games are basically non-humans or you can select/make your own gender.
Math: 32% + 9% = 41%.
41% of all games announced had a gender-specific lead. The other 59% is irrelevant, because controlling a rocket-fueled car isn't part of the discussion.
9% of 41% means:
9 / 41 * 100 = 22% of gender-specific lead are females.
So she ended up with a better result than the original statement.... so it's basically going into the right direction

This is what I find so dumb about it all.
When I was growing up, you were a complete and utter dork if you admitted to playing videogames. Girls were absolutely repulsed by the hobby in every way. And now I'm told I was part of the "problem" and was "gatekeeping" to keep girls away from it for all those years. It's all made up.

The reason this all happened is plainly obvious though.
A previously unknown person enters an established community and proceed to talk trash about said community.
The problem is that this person is talking shite and some of their "takes" are just flat out nonsense.
So, like most communities online, people want to present a counter argument and take her shitty takes apart.
However, comments are shut off and likes and dislikes are shut off.
What's worse is anyone who has a go at criticizing her is branded an "incel weirdo" or whatever.
So this creates a feedback loop.
On top of all that people with a bit of clout in the community support her AND misrepresent her critics.
Lets say a new poster comes to NeoGAF and talks trash about Playstation.
People try to debunk their points but no no no this person has the entire forum on ignore and usually just makes an OP then bails.
However, they DO go to Twitter and moan about "XBox harassers" then come back to the forum and have another ill informed take on Playstation.
THEN mods and community leaders here start promoting the anti-Playstation threads and calling anyone who speaks out childish names.

The problem with Anita and the gaming community was always that criticism of her work was never really given any mainstream platform.
Like criticism of gaming was held up as this really good and amazing thing. Yet, criticism of the criticism was a huge no-no.
If Trump says videogames cause violence you will get plenty of articles pushing the counter argument.
If Anita says videogames cause misogyny it's just accepted as fact and no counter argument will be given the time of day.

More diversity is always a great thing. But you can't have more diversity without.... more diversity. So if there aren't more women within the industry, then there won't be more women at E3. That's all there really is to it. Hell, I'd think it'd be cool to see a lot of things, but you can't and shouldn't think about forcing them.
