Hardware competition does nothing to inspire Square Enix or BioWare to make better RPGs.

Hardware can inspire, but it always enables. Combine that with all the extra software libraries that the hardware vendors provide and software developers can make better products in shorter amounts of time. Would Xbox Live exist if Microsoft hadn't made it easy, and had standards for its implementation?
