InaudibleWhispa said:Above or below the TV is optimal. Between 2 and 6 feet is the recommendation for camera height. I wouldn't worry too much about uneven lighting, that video was describing the best possible set-up imaginable. As long as he doesn't have, say, a dark room with a floodlight in the corner or something, it should be fine. We'll have to wait until launch to truly see how well it performs in different environments, but it seems pretty flexible to me.
6 feet is recommended for full body tracking. It will work closer, but it won't be at it's best.dskillzhtown said:How far away do you need to be from the Kinect sensor? That is my one concern. I would assume it is the same as a wii sensor.
Yeah, the lighting is mostly an issue for anything that needs to use the RGB camera, but it shouldn't effect most gameplay that uses the IR depth data. If the system needs to see your face, naturally it has to be well lit.Chrange said:If there's a bright light behind you and none in front, it'll have trouble identifying you for the automatic login. Same for a bight light above (ceiling fan for example) if you wear a baseball cap while playing, so your face is in shadow.

IGN posted their unboxing video yesterday:

Same 5 games included + bundled Kinect Adventures.
Seems that MS is focusing all of its attention to its own published titles (plus Dance Central and YourShape), probably a wise choice, these 6 games have the most positive impressions.

It helps reaffirms preconceived notions that Kinect is "broken."Sho_Nuff82 said:Why, of all videos, does that one have 200k views on youtube?

Kinectimals is ferociously and dangerously cute.
and btw cats > dogs, if they really wanted to copy Nintendogs they would have done a game with wolves

maybe a stupid question. but does it have to be looking the same way as the tv does?BenjaminBirdie said:I've also heard about people putting it behind the TV on like a bookshelf or something, but high enough so it can still see you. That might work too.

If it can still see you, yeah that would be a good way to shorten the distance needed!BenjaminBirdie said:I've also heard about people putting it behind the TV on like a bookshelf or something, but high enough so it can still see you. That might work too.

Most important thing is that it can still see the floor.BenjaminBirdie said:I've also heard about people putting it behind the TV on like a bookshelf or something, but high enough so it can still see you. That might work too.

Snuggler said:I never thought of that, but that's a great idea and it sounds like the perfect solution for me since my living room is kinda cramped.
Now I just need to get rid of my 4 ft long coffee table since it's made of glass and that could potentially be a problem since its in the middle of the room.
I can see myself flubbing a dance move and crashing through the glass.
When you set it up you are required to record the rooms natural ambiance, so in theory it should try to compensate, though it would naturally have some effect. I'd just avoid boxing Kinect in.PopcornMegaphone said:If Kinect is buried deep in a bookshelf I would think it could possibly impact the voice recognition/detection. Not sure though.

SeaOfMadness said:yeah that's the only explanation. They must have doctored the video.
it's called having final hardware and software.
Videos of the recent builds have all looked a lot better, just as the E310' builds looked more responsive than E309's. It didn't suddenly just go from laggy mess to acceptable, though I can see why it would seem that way if you've been linked to specific comments/videos only to then watch a more recent one. It's been a gradual improvement, but the final builds definitely look a lot better and the tracking is cleaner too. An hour of play and no real BAM moments. When applied to an avatar, movements are still a little stiff, if I was to be critical at this point, but that is definitely something that will improve as the Kinect software is updated.Rad- said:Eh, I'm not trolling or anything. I just have a hard time believing it's suddenly that good. I really had to look for the lag to even notice it.
If the final product really plays like that then darn, I'm buying myself one at some point.

Well there's no reason for them to edit it to make it look smoother. And there are times without splitscreen where you notice just how smooth the latency is compared to older builds.Rad- said:Eh, I'm not trolling or anything. Looks like the base isn't very large so it might be useful for some. If it is a standard mount connector, you might could even use a tripod you already own.
Joy Ride has always been, from what I've seen, the most problematic of the big launch titles. It seemingly worked fine for some people, refused to even acknowledge others and responsiveness depended on how it was feeling that day. Kinect support wasn't added until later in development so they've just had to work out the kinks right til the end. It seems to work pretty well and consistently now.Rad- said:Well the last video I watched was like a month ago some JoyRide footage and it looked way laggier. Like a half second lag or something, looked really unplayable tbh. Totally different case here.

Well they used a green-screen effect, so they were able to take some liberties, one being modifying the synchronization.Rad- said:Wait, is this video edited or something? The response time seems way better than in previous videos.

Listen during Dance Central/Poker Face. There's an echo cause by hearing parts of the song from the direct feed, then through their studio microphones. The amount the direct feed audio is ahead of the mic audio should be equal to how much shifting they did.
It comes on the Kinect Adventures disc, so they'll be fine. A guy on YouTube got his early too (though his videos aren't worth watching). Won't be able to connect to Xbox Live though!Jtyettis said:Edit: Though I have to wonder anyone lucky enough to get one early will they even be able to use it without the new dash? Keep in mind that Gamespot most likely uses TV or monitor running in game (or whatever low latency) mode because they actually know what they are doing, and most of the time many game show tvs, or projectors, are running with factory settings using many filters that add lag to the video. It's totally impossible to notice when you watch someone playing with a joypad for obvious reasons, but someone waggling makes it way more easy to see, especially when it's 1:1.Rad- said:Eh, I'm not trolling or anything.
