Anyone buy TOCA3?

Just curious what impressions are like. The reviews sound a bit dissapointing, sounds like the driving model was not very good especially for off-road vehicles. But 2 was excellent and didn't get much love.

Anyone?
 
I didn't even see it yesterday...not that I've got the dosh to afford it anyway. This along with WE9 will both have to wait till March.
 
I'm going to see if I can track it down this weekend. I haven't played the TOCA games before but I've heard worlds of good about it. I need something to play on my PS2 besides Guitar Hero, after all.
 
Horrible peice of shit physics model. Everything seems golden, the presentation, your Scottish pit manager, and all the cool events but all is ruined as soon as your tires loose grip there is no feel of the road to get your car back undercontrol, plus the AI is brutal and wont hesitate to spin you out. Driving on wet gravel is impossible. All the other events are mildly intertaining but the shallow physics are mindnumbingly boring.

That actually sounds like good physics to me. I've never seen a race car hit a gravel trap that has had no difficultly in getting out.

I was refering to the rally races.

Actually I forgot I was playing with Pro-simulation handling, I just went back and its much easier with normal handling. ...hmm
 
I've played through nearly the complete game. There is absolutely NO problem with the driving physics. In fact, maybe the best physics I've ever experienced in my opinion.
And what a great game, by the way. There is so much to do, from kart racing to Indy car series to stockcar to rally to Formula 1...
Presentation is very nice, great cutscenes, beatiful visuals. My only complaint is that the AI drivers are sometimes a bit unfair and crash you out of the race.
In my opinion TOCA3 is a lot better than TOCA2 which was already great.

Did you try the pro-sim handling option? It felt good at first but as I progressed, the rally racing became infuriating. I just switched it back to normal physics and I am loving the game again. Looks stunning on the PS2.
 
Xbox version is great. I was about to say something about Gek complaining about the handling but I haven't tried the rally events yet (and will try to keep away from them anyway). I've always hated the rally mode in this game and I don't see that changing this time around.

I agree with thegodsend, the physics in this game are incredible. Running the Australian V8's through Adelaide was a dream, you're no longer able just to throw your car through a corner and abuse the handbrake to save yourself. If you hit a gravel trap you will come to a halt the majority of the time. The AI is pretty aggressive most of the time but you can't just take their line and hope for the best because the damage model is now very harsh. I rear ended someone on a straight and ended up with a completed broken front axel with wheels pointing perpendicular to the way I was trying to go.

I don't know where the "average" reviews are coming from for this game because it's an improvement on an already excellent game. I can only think they didn't care for the non-core racing components, but honestly the rest of it is so well done and polished this time I couldn't mark it down for that.

As for the earlier demo, I heard it was based on a build that was made sometime last summer. So it really wasn't representive of the final game, though that's no excuse to put out a demo based on such an early build.

My friend and I rented it today, and AFAWCT, the game only supports the DFP in Legacy Mode, but the force feedback feels pretty good... seems as strong as it was in GT3, and is much better than the virtually nonexistent resistance in SR2006. Control-wise (and we've barely scratched the surface), I'm off the road quite a bit (^_^;), and it doesn't quite feel as intuitive as it should, but we'll see how it goes from here on out.

LOL yeah i like the game alot. Having played the shit out of TOCA2 in league for over a year (and liking the game alot) i must say i was ready for disapointment.
Seems like i'm surprised. TOCA 3 really surpassed TOCA 2 in simply every way. Forget about the reviews, there is really a resistance here in America against good racing. It's like "err, Nascar or bust" or something.
Try it Musashi, there's 3 times the amount of races and different racing disciplines, all the circuits are real and even the old ones are completely redesign. The "pro sim" settings are awesome this time too, no more stupid icy feel like most sim racers.
TOCA3 for the win. This game was worth a 9.something.
 
The screenshots of this game have got me interested, but I don't know a damn thing about it really. I've never even played a Toca game before and i'm a racing game freak.

Does the PS2 version have online play?

Cool, I plan to pick it up next week then. I know you felt a lot of what I did for 2 (but with way more experience) so between that recommendation and Gek's it's hard to say no.

I've played both demos, does that count? The first demo really shouldn't. Does anyone know if those dreadful Hondas or whatever they were are in the actual game? And if so, can you somehow avoid them in the main career mode?

I think it works great with the DFP. 900 degree rotation is included, but it's optional, which is a nice feature. I think the optimal amount of force feedback would be between the Normal and Hard settings, but one or the other there's enough input to know what's going on with your car. Switching to Pro-Sim handling on the cars is a must for the steering wheel, I think.

My general impression of the game is that I'm overwhelmed with stuff to do. Even though a lot of the cars feel generic, that's okay because of the variety of tracks and disciplines. I can't wait to unlock Indy and the V8 Supercars and a lot of other stuff.

There's an exclusive branch of the game that's dedicated to Hondas, and you need a code from the Honda UK website to unlock it if you don't want to unlock it manually. It's cool though, because you can race on some of the high-end GP tracks early, and race on lawnmowers.

That's right, lawnmowers.
 
Shame it is the only recent game that has the 2006 Honda Civic (despite it only has the 2006 SI from the demo, I wanted to drive the EX 4 door the one I dive). I was hoping one of the more mainstream friendly games would get the Civic 2006 like the next Gran Turismo, Microsoft, or gasp even an EA racer.

But why a non dedicated racing game that doesn't stick to one kind of racing. Lawn mower racing???? What is this a mini web flash game or something from My Street??!?!??! I guess you Toca fans are staying as Toca fans then. I only ran the pc demo but my xp2600+ processor is slow (under 30fps at multiple cars) comapred to over 1 gig of ram and geforce gt6600. I would get the game one day when I can afford a Logitec wheel and the price goes down. Now return to your regularly scheduled Toca discussion.
 
If TOCA had stayed as nothing but a simulation of the British, Australian and/or German touring car series has it had been before, I'd still be a fan. The fact that it covered so many race disciplines so well in the last game (and seems to have increased the number of disciplines and quality with 3) makes it pretty much impossible for me to resist.

yea, it makes it a lot of fun online too. a lot of variety to the matches.
 
Why have a simulation handling when the AI stays with the normal handling with heavy stability control?

I didn't like how it was implemented in Race Driver.

I like the idea of lots of different disciplines, but let me control how I approach them. Don't force me to race fucking trucks or some other shitty vehicle just to progress.

If I want to play only touring cars, let me. I'll arse around with karts later

Is the race selection more flexible in this version? Is there a 360 version planned?
 
No 360 version planned.

Apart from the world tour modus there is the new pro career. In pro career you choose one discipline and have to advance there. For example, you choose Open Wheel, start in Karts and progress through Formula Ford, Formula Palmer Audi... until Formula 1.
 
Codemasters have forgotten how to make realistic physics :( I don't feel the car's weight. The car is floating all the time, it's almost as if

I always play from cockpit view if available :/ and the feeling is not there IMHO.

Ok. But did you went further into the game? The first cups you get to do (like GT lights, Super Copa, etc) Are very light...
And well, if it still does not feel right for you then... be it.

Well, I tried Toca3 yesterday evening, along with friends, and because they are not fans of simulation games I did not try the pro sim mode. The gameplay was totally shit, and that's because I was disappointed. I thought that changing to pro mode will not be that different, and because it was too late, I did not try it. I WAS WRONG. It's totally different.

I decided to try the game just now and change to pro mode to see if Wyzdom was right, because his impressions were really well written, and because I really desired TOCA3 to be a great sim. And it is :) The control of the car changes in every single way. Its like night and day. I did not expect to see such a change. I have seen a lot of Novice/Pro control setups, but that is maybe the biggest change I can remember. I'm not talking about turning Driving Aids on and off -Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix being the king IMO- I'm talking about a whole reset of physics parameters in the physics engine.

All I can say is thank you, Wyzdom, now it will be colosus / races / colosus / races XD

Anyways, I have only tried it 5 minutes :P I will play more tomorrow and I'll explore its simulation gameplay :)

95% of the time you have 3 different styles to choose from to advance.


Codemasters must be hurting to put cheap 3rd party ads on their website.
