Anyone else avoid games with a reputation for being hard?

People said Bloodborne was hard so I was a bit hesitant going into it, ended up being my favorite PS4 game. I don't consider myself that good a gamer, but didn't have too hard a time of it.

So remember that challenging != you have to be some elite gamer to hope to beat.

I used to, and would even play most games on Easy, but then Demons Souls happened and I came to appreciate difficulty in games

Whether or not I pass on something that’s hard comes down to a “how do I feel about playing something hard now” than any kind of overall desire to avoid hard games. I play easy and hard games equally

I get bored easily if I start feeling like a game is going easy on me intentionally. Rather I tend to knock the difficulty slider up a couple notches on pretty much everything I play.

I think Bunny Must Die has a bit of a reputation for being difficult OP. :P
To answer the question though, no I do not, I just play games based on my tastes, and because I like old school dungeon crawlers that just so happens to have a lot of difficult games contained within the genre.

Yes. I'm no longer 15. I don't have the time, energy, or patience to constantly replay a level until I master it. I don't want a cakewalk either, but I do want to relax and unwind.

I don't really concern myself over a game's difficulty so much as whether the content interests me or not. But yes, if there is a game I'm interested in AND it has a rep for being really hard, I am less likely to devote time to it. Which is kinda the opposite of how I used to be, heh.

Depends why it's considered hard. Lots of grinding, bullet sponges, unfair mechanics, yeah I'll avoid those. If there's just deep gameplay with lots of aspects to master, I'll actually be more interested. There's a reason why StarCraft is my all-time favorite game.

With Cuphead now wowing everyone with its style and shocking most with its difficulty I'm again staying away because "hard" is not a selling point to me.

There are many games that advertise themselves as tough as nails (especially since Dark Souls got big), seems to be a big plus for some but to me that's an instant avoid, even if the game otherwise sounds interesting.

Anyone else feel that way?

I avoided the Souls series until Dark Souls was free on Games with Gold (I forget what year that was exactly)

Beat it, liked it and went on to purchase Bloodbourne, Demon Souls and Dark Souls 3.

Haven't played a souls game because of it's reputation.
That reputation is a kind of overblown. The Souls games are all about patience and caution. They're challenging games for sure, but they're challenging in the way a racing game is challenging, in that once you understand the track and how to manage your car's handling and how to corner and so on, you can master a track that seemed insurmountable

The older I get the more I appreciate Easy modes, I usually will start on normal and if I get stuck, will drop it down. For me games are for relaxing and while I appreciate a good challenge - I really don't want to spend alot of time in any one area.

It's an overblown rep. The best thing I can say about the difficulty in the Souls game is that if you play them cautiously, pay attention to enemy patterns, and don't get too greedy/foolish then you'll be fine. It's mostly just that the game punishes you hard if you don't play by their rules.

I used to. I remember reading about Demon's Souls and how its difficulty was part of its appeal and I scoffed at the idea. Who in their right mind would enjoy that?

Then I actually played it. Now I actively seek out challenging games.

Are you me?

It's the opposite for me usually. Unless the genre is uninteresting to me.

Ninja Gaiden, Super Meat Boy, Dark Souls, Binding of Isaac, Spelunky

All games that people were saying we're super hard and I played them just to say I beat them.

Now that I look at the list though, these are some of my favorite games.

Same here. Once I played Demons Souls, that opened up whole new avenues of games. Roguelikes. Precision platformers. Hard-ass puzzlers like Spacechem. Sims and tactical strategy games. Weird games that require you to learn their rules and mechanics to understand how to play like Sethian

The reputed difficulty of the Souls games has been a turn-off, but the real turn-off for me is that I don't find their "worlds" and "environments" very interesting if that makes sense. I remember hearing about a sci-fi game for PS4 that was supposedly a Souls clone, and that sounded interesting, but I never followed up on it or heard anything about it after. I assume it wasn't very good (I can't remember the name offhand).

Edit: Might've been The Surge?

I have no time to master incredibly hard games. I normally play SP on Hard but if I'm dying constantly or have to grind too much I'll pass.

I seek out hard games sometimes. gameplay without a realistic chance of failure started feeling less interesting in action and platforming games at some point last gen

It's real easy to not take dying personally when I know games were designed to wreck me.

I'm often more put off if a game has a reputation for offering no challenge at all. Well outside of a few genres I'm bad at, if someone complains of an easy bullet hell then its probably "normal" for me. In general though its hard for my interest to be maintained if I can just cakewalk through a game.

Not really, Souls games are considered hard and they are not hard at all, pretty much every game considered hard in this day and age gets that consideration from people who didn't experienced gaming in the early 90's.

And I won't skip a game due to its difficulty if I am interested in it.

If it's -hard- to the point of not being fun, then yes. I don't mind a challenge, but if it's cheap then no thanks.

For reference, I played Demon's Souls and didn't find it enjoyable, so I skipped the rest of the games in the Soulsborne line.

But I enjoy a challenge like SMHUPs.

I find myself putting them on the back burner a lot nowadays "for when I have the time and patience because this looks still interesting despite the difficulty" and then obviously never getting around to playing them.

Sure, between a hard game and a normal one launching at the same time and at the same price, hard one will go into a wishlist and wait for sale. I don't have enough time to fight with artificial difficulty only because some developer decided that it's "fun" to replay the same area for 10-20 times.

Cuphead, Ori and Souls all force you to learn the maps, enemy attack patterns, easiest way to kill each enemy while avoiding damage, and maneuver around the level. I feel like it's more of a challenge simply because the game expects you to learn and pay attention.

Yeah I was going to say, that's quite the avatar / OP combo. Is there a story behind it?

cupheads difficulty is overblown considering you have infinite instant restarts and theres an easily toggle-able simple mode

its harder to beat contra than it is to beat cuphead

I don't avoid them per se but I do usually wait until they are really cheap before purchasing because I expect I may only get an hour or two out of them if they are truly that difficult.

Yes I play games mainly for relaxation. If its too hard ill stop. If all people do is brag about how hard it is, I'll never play it.

Barely have time to play games as an adult. I welcome all easy games with no chance of losing any kind of much valued progress (time or otherwise).

Opposite - I gravitate towards hard games. Nothing puts me off more than hand-holding in games.

You want me to advance down that road and take out the enemies? Please don't put a huge arrow pointing towards that, the distance, the number of enemies, etc. I'll find my own way there, thank you very much.

I just try to avoid bad games and games that I'm confident I wouldn't enjoy. I definitely like easy, breezy games like Snipperclips but I also got a lot out of Nioh and the Crash N. Sane Trilogy. Looking forward to Cuphead when it comes to PS4 or Mac.

With the exception of Soulsborne games, I avoid trying out games with that kind of reputation like Shovel Knight and other 8-bit games that rely on repetition and gradual improvements because I get bored really easy. I could use my time better by watching a good movie or playing games that are focused on escapism.

Real life is depressing enough; I don't need to be reminded of how bad I am at things.

Totally! I never much cared for tough challenges in games. Beating my head against the wall on a hard part until I get that "one lucky run" never came off as fun to me. I'm wary of Metroid Samus Returns now due to people talking about how hard it is on the base(?) difficulty. Dunno if theres a truly easy mode in there though.

Yeah. Life is too short to waste doing the same thing over and over again. If a game advertises an easy mode, I'll be way more likely to give it a shot.

Difficulty is more than just run-n-gun/platformer style "repeat until succeed" challenge

What do you think of games like SpaceChem and Stephen's Sausage Roll?
