Anyone else completely unmoved by Star Wars?

Also yeah, I agree with the people who are saying the Flight of the Navigator comment betrays and murders the OP. That movie is legit good.

But I do have some fond memories of watching that film as a kid. However, I re-watched it recently and it was a bit naff.

I like Star Wars but I'm not fanatical about it. I enjoy the original trilogy and I'm excited for the new one, but that's about it for me.

Me. I've tried to watch several times. My wife is a fan and we've got the box set. I can't get through them. The series does nothing for me.

Episode 5 drags with Yoda.

Except Terminator 2 came out before Terminator Salvation. It's more like expecting Terminator Salvation to suck if Terminator 2 sucked (which it didn't). At the time, George Lucas had a very solid history producing Star Wars movies and proved himself more than competent, which is why I was hyped for TPM. JJ Abrams has not proven himself to be competent at directing a Star Wars movie yet, so like I say, my expectations are tempered. Buy into the hype if you want, but I've done that already once, and I learn from my mistakes.

It's not more like that, as the time they came out is irrelevant. The creative teams are different, so judging one by the other makes no sense. I do, however, agree with your assessment of JJ Abrams, so my expectations are tempered. Those expectations have nothing to do with the prequels, though, as they're irrelevant in this situation.

It is not a cinematic masterpiece and I am not sure why it has garnered such a following when there are much better well made blockbusters out there that have actually aged well. It is not bad or anything and is a fun romp but that is it.

Star Wars was breezy fun, nothing more for me, and I thought Empire was legitimately very good, and the 3rd the lesser of the three. So, I'm not big on Star Wars much at all, but I'm looking forward to the next flick, regardless of my disappointment in Abram's as a director.

I've never seen a Star Wars movie and I don't have a particularly strong desire to. I figure the upcoming movie will be my first though.

Please post impressions if you do watch the new one without ever having seen the others. I would be very interested to see what someone with no Star Wars experience thinks of it.

I was pretty big on the series as a kid, perhaps not as much as some of my friends but still as a nerdy kid you couldn't not be into them. I rarely go to the cinema; I'll probably go for TFA, but yeah I'm not exactly hyped. Not concerned or pessimistic either as I'm pretty confident this will be a much better film than any of the prequels, just not very excited for some reason.

Loved the first two films but RoTJ was dismal and the less said about the prequels the better. I dare say whatever JJ Abrams has cooked up will be suitably reverential and full of 'hell yes' moments for die hard fans, but based off of his Star Trek films I have a hard time imagining him bringing anything substantive to the table beyond nostalgia with a twist.

Yea they're not that great for me. I have fond memories of watching them on tv repeatedly every Christmas time when they were on, while building Lego sets I got as gifts.

Recently rewatched 4,5,6 and the special effects are downright dreadful, really take away from the experience and ruined the nostalgia I had for them. The sfx just haven't aged well at all, I totally get why Lucas wanted to redo them.

Its not just star wars either. My wife flipped when I said I hadn't seen the Never Ending Story, so we watched it and I thought the effects were teribad in that too.

I'll see the new one, but I'll probably go on a weekday after a few weeks and the crowds have calmed down.

If people are hyped, more power to them, I hope they enjoy it.

I mean, Star Wars is okay. I don't get the rabid enthusiasm some people have towards the movies. Nostalgia I guess?

I only rate ANH and ESB as decent movies but nowhere near masterpieces They are enjoyable enough as kid's movies and a gateway into a fun universe, for sure. Don't really get what people see in them beyond that. The almost-religious reverence some regard Star Wars with is baffling to me, but I guess that's true about most fandoms.

Never really cared for Star Wars. Seeing it opening night but I'd rather see Hateful Eight. Star Wars, to me, is like Elder Scrolls where the game has a hardcore following but then blows up because everyone has been dying for a sequel. Sounds more like band wagoning at this point.

Can't say I'm a big fan of the Star Wars world. Probably due to growing up with the Prequels. I just don't get it. It's hard to have nostalgia goggles for Episodes 4-6 because all the special effects turn the experience into watching with campy goggles. Performances are so stilted and rigged too. And don't get me started on the 1 main female thing per trilogy.

With that said, I'm somehow super excited about Episode 9. I feel like all my complaints have already been addressed by the trailers alone. I don't know why.

Star Wars is an excellent entertainment option for the whole family. From Episodes 1 to 6 and the new film, STAR WARS: The Force Awakens, coming to theatres in December 2015 (tickets available online now), you just can't miss!

is the new one that's coming out not episode 7?

Empire is the only really good movie. New hope is mostly fine but nothing of note. Everything else is pretty bad and boring.

Boba Fett looks cool though

I enjoyed KOTOR more than the OT films.

I watched IV but it didn't really do anything for me and I didn't bother watching the others. I'll probably eventually go back and try again but yeah I've yet to become a fan of Star Wars.

I did play KOTOR and one of the N64 games though and liked them both.

I enjoyed the films, especially the OT. But the EU is superior to the films in most ways, especially the Old Republic. Which is now non canon :/.

I'm a couple of decades removed from being personally invested in Star Wars. I was the most into it in my mid-teens, when I played TIE Fighter and read some of the Thrawn-era EU books and pored over the LucasArts catalogs. It became a thing for other people with the PT and the surge of EU nonsense since that time. The way it always seems to be highly visible somewhere on the internet, from recent video games to comics to novels to merch to nostalgia articles to endlessly rehashing plot points on forums, has removed a lot of the mystique for me. The trailers press some very obvious nostalgia buttons, and I'll definitely watch the mainline entries in the new trilogy, but it's not really my thing anymore. That's OK.

Don't care, there's nothing I've seen that convinced me to think this won't be a bog standard Marvelesque film. And I've stopped getting excited about big franchises, not to mention that overall Star Wars isn't that great of a franchise to begin with. You got two good films, one okay film, and three of the worst films ever. It's like getting excited about a new Simpsons movie.

I thought a few of the Star Wars movies were fun. I'd probably like them more if the fandom didn't run everything into the ground.

Alright, stormtroopers, darth vader - can you cool it a little?

There are plenty of people like you. Nothing wrong with that obviously. Most of my family and friends are completely uninterested in it. I need a new family and friends.

The only thing I ever really liked was Jabba the Hutt.

It remains my one and only dream to become Jabba the Hutt.

what the hell does this mean

It has some ( actually many now that I think about it) anime tropes in it. Plus cool sword battles and powers , So I wouldnt really take it all that bad.

I've never been into Star Wars. The storylines are way too anime for me.

ROFL ... This is true , but its also why I like the series. And I enjoy my lightsaber battles , yea that shit alone basically got me into the series.

its super overrated (mostly in terms of plot, dialogue, and acting) but I grew up with it so it still means something to me. normally i don't get super sentimental about media but for some reason i guess thats the case for star wars

I remember watching Empire Strikes Back in theaters when I was like 5 or so in the 90s.

I hate Star Wars/Star Trek.

With Star Trek, I actually think the ideas in some of the movies are interesting but the execution was lacking. And all of the TV series looked terrible.

With Star Wars I just don't like the characters at all. It's just way too cheesy for me. Luke was unlikable. Lei is your typical tough bitch. Chewie is ridiculous. And Han okay at best. The mentor dude is your typical mentor. And Yoda is a wise muppet. I understand if you saw this back in the day and had your brain melted, I get that sense of nostalgia. But it has no effect on me.

I've always turned to the Alien series (at least the first 3 movies) as a universe that's more interesting to me. And I liked Guardians of the Galaxy.

TBH, whether they're canon or not doesn't even matter to me. Make them Earth-2 or whatever I just want more well written Star Wars properties.

Actually the exact opposite for me. I've never really been into Star Wars. Used to be pretty blase about the series. But recently, after watching the trailers, I've grown very interested in the series.

I've considered watching all the movies and read/listen to a couple of audio books. I don't know why, but it just suddenly clicked for me.

And I love it.

I've always been terrifically uninterested in seeing the Alien "universe". I liked it as a backdrop for a horror film, and then a military thriller, but the more they dig into lore and universe-building, I just shake my head.

Star Wars hinted that you had wandered into a larger universe the moment the first movie began, so it feels like less of a diversion to explore it. I'm pretty fatigued with exploring it outside the mainline films though.

I agree OP. My coworkers are so offended that I don't like Star Wars. They lost their shit when I said it's an acquired taste. Look, I don't hate SW, but space ships that sound like vacuum clears and lazer swords are an acquired taste.

I think it's an acquired taste. Or really, something that just clicks for some people and not for others.

It's a really wierd series, and I'm surprised it's this cultural mega-phenomenon, even though I count myself among it.

This is crazy but I didn't really know what Star Wars was about, and barely remember it, I was too young when I watched the original trilogy. But I was always addicted to that Star Wars arcade game.

Anyway like you OP always wondered why everyone was so nuts about star wars. Then one day when i was 11, I played the Phantom Menace game. I really liked it bad as it was. Lightsabers where like waahhhhh. Then when I was 12 I watched Phantom Menace. (YES I KNOW) 1 year after it was released and somehow as shitty as it was, I really loved it. I then started to read Star Wars books starting with Return of the Jedi....I just imagined everything in that book not knowing what the movie was about. Then a year later I watched the prequels on this DVD set that the bookstore was selling and it was like everything came to life from the book and my dreams came through. Never looked back since and have wasted so much money on Star Wars everything with NO REGRETS.

Wish you luck OP!

Well yea, that's why I'm dissapointed it's non-canon. The lore in TOR is really good and makes the universe better as a whole. I agree though. Fingers crossed for the films, but I feel like it's going to be as black and white as the others.

Visceral is working on a Star Wars (ideally frostbite) game makes me somewhat hopeful even if it doesn't look like a KOTOR/DragonAge styled RPG.

Star Wars Episode 7/8/9 are the new TLoU, Bloodborne/DS, Witcher series, Undertale. Hyped to infinity by its fanbase.

I'm sure it will be good though.

Edit: Can't wait for the "clickbait" claims on a negative review.

I am the same OP, the movie aren't that great and I don't get why everyone makes a big deal over them even to the point of hijacking a day just so they can celebrate the movie, we get it you like the movie but that is no reason to rub it in everyone faces.

Star Wars isn't sci-fi.

It has Sci-fi setting so yes it is.
