Anyone else hope Luke never fights with a lightsaber in Ep8/9?

I most definitely want him to, but if they want to show how powerful a Jedi Master looks, I'd rather they take inspiration from Rogue One with
Vader's hallway scene,
although obviously less stiff since he's not confined to a suit. Basically an extreme level of skill and confidence, shown by no wasted movements
as opposed to the prequels high acrobatics and unnecessary flashiness and flair.
This is my thinking as well, I want to see him having developed a style akin to Vaders peak fighting style, maybe with less full-blown brutality but still 100% confidence and outcome with every action.

There should be a scene where Luke puts his hands together like he's holding a lightsaber when in fact there's nothing there. Using the Force, his sheer will takes shape in the form of a lightsaber blade and he uses that instead.

Why not both?

Luke should definitely use his lightsaber, but also be incredibly powerful with force powers.

I want both.

I always figured a logical next step for a Lightsaber was literally a big beam of light you simply manipulate with the Force.

I'd bet you can at least pull some Ivy shit with it. Or even do something like Yondu's arrow from GotG.

I'd prefer that, but I trust Rian Johnson to have enough restraint so we don't get a repeat of the prequels, with Yoda flipping all over the place.

With episode 9, who knows.

Thematically, I love the idea of restricting Luke's combat to the force. It's tricky, though. And not just because lightsaber battles have historically made for such iconic set-pieces.

Tricky bit #1:

It doesn't make for particularly thrilling cinema to watch two 9000+ force users throw shit at each other. Take Yoda and Dooku's force-off, for example, which is neat for all of about 5 seconds. Palpatine's fry-up with Luke in Episode 6 fares much better, of course, but that's because it's less of a visceral action scene, and more of an emotional-climax. It works, but for different reasons. Likewise for Yoda raising the X-Wing, Leia calling out to Luke, and Kylo stopping the laser. These are quiet, ephemeral sequences full of mystery and wonder - not action.

Tricky bit #2:

On the other hand, if you push the force too far in the other direction, suddenly you're in Neo-territory. In other words, a character whose power is crazy to watch, but so incredibly vast that it often borders on ridiculous. Neo's abilities have no obvious limitations. This, in turn, robs the character of his vulnerability. In The Matrix 2 and 3, the presence of Neo immediately removes any sense of danger from a scene. It can be slick as hell to watch in short bursts, but the further you get into The Matrix trilogy (and the closer Neo gets to "God-tier") the harder it became for the Wachowskis to craft action scenes around him. That's why he spends vast chunks of Reloaded and Revolutions out of commission. It's also why, when he is called to action, it's usually just to swoop in and save the day at the last possible second.

It's the superman conundrum. And while it's cool thematically to watch Neo grow "beyond" the system, at a certain point, you'd rather just watch him perform feats of wire-fu with dual-pistols in tow.

So, yeah - two pretty big extremes there, but the TL;DR version is this:

Thematically? By all means, force-only all the way. But find a way to depict it in a visually thrilling way, while maintaining some semblance of vulnerability. Failing that, maybe just keep Luke out of combat altogether, preserving any display of his power for the big, show-stopping moments (on the level of, say, guiding an ion torpedo into the death star, only times a million).

Or just hand the dude a lightsaber.

Nice points. I have considered the difficulty in visually depicting force-only battles in a thrilling way if you were limited to working within the narrow lines of what's been established already (throwing shit at each other as you've said). I do contend that there are a lot things you can do with the force that wouldn't turn the user into Neo.

What if the show-stopping moment were reversed against SW traditions -- Instead of the force being used as the closer, it was a lightsaber instead? You still have Luke use a lightsaber, but in a moment of desperation when all else fails.

That show was hilarious

That show was fucking great

Still the best action in any Star Wars film or cartoon.

easily

I wish someone at Lucasfilm would give Tartakovsky the keys to a movie. I really do.

It'd be cool to have a scene where Force user controls a beam shot from a blaster and uses it to take out multiple guards at once.

But Guardians of Galaxy 2 already kinda has that scene so bleh. Maybe just a better showing of powerful force lightning or blasts would be cool. Or something new like force plasma blasts. Slower than lightning but greater range and power.

I hope he uses it, and I hope it's the mother of all lightsaber fights. I don't want him flipping around, I just want him wading into a crowd of opponents and destroying them like it's nothing. I want the Star Wars version of the village fight from the second Rurouni Kenshin film.

Honestly I can't see Lucasfilm able to make exciting battle scenes entirely out of force techniques. If there have been any, lemme know because I honestly don't remember any.

I like lightsabers and I enjoy seeing masters of the craft using them. I want Luke to kick fucking ass with his lightsaber. I was a kid when I saw AoTC, and I was hyped as fuck when Yoda took out his saber. Without the lightsaber, it's barely any different than just watching wizards fight, not Jedi/Sith/Miscellaneous darksider.

And honestly there really aren't too many magic vs magic battles in cinema either. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Voldemort vs Dumbledore in OoTP. So really, I think hollywood has a better track record with sword fights. Let Luke kick ass with his saber.

I do, but as a last resort sort of thing.

I can see him being so blasé with minor foes that he can just brush them aside with the force. Like how a martia arts master effortlessly dodges and overpowers his opponent with seemingly little effort and with grace and style.

When he's up against it though, out comes the saber. A green one at that.

I want his true power to be concealed throughout most of the film, maybe because he came to realize that using the force for "one side" always ends in an imbalance. That way, they could legitimize him using a saber instead of his force-powers.

I want him to have one badass Saber-fight-scene in VIII, not a 1v1 (that one belongs to rey) but a total destructon of a large crowd of enemies as a last resort to save the day. Without breaking a sweat, being more concerned with his inner struggle of having to use violence again than giving a single fuck about his opponents.

And a big (like, really big) show of his force-powers in IX, maybe even causing his death and/or becoming one with the force because his human body cant handle his power anymore.

I thought about Luke turning evil and fighting against rey, but Luke has to be so OP canonically that i cant find a solution to make this fight work within Rey´s characer development.

I really wouldn't care what he did with his lightsaber ... lit a fire, imported a Taun Taun to the island and killed it for game, carved his name on the wall ... it'd just be cool to see him with his green lightsaber again ... or shit, dual wield the green and blue ones. I'd literally implode in my movie seat.

I'm always disappointed by how short Anakin dual wields in Episode II. Like, maybe 5 seconds before he loses one of them.

Just give him the Super Star Wars special moveset. Stand at the entrance to a first order building and force throw your (green) saber into in and it flys down all the hallways taking everyone out.

Or like Dr. Manhatten and make things self dismantle as he walks through. He looks at the storm trooper and his gun just falls apart in his hands.

I do love the idea of force hadoukens too.

You can't just have force blast battles between force adapts because it's boring. Who has the stronger force push? Boring. Fight would just be over based on that alone.

Go full hermit and use the force to control the lightsaber. Fuck it.

I've been waiting my whole life to see Luke Skywalker go full jedi master I want him to annihilate knights of Ren left and right have him control 10 lightsabers at the same time using the force while he's in meditation mode full god mode

It's only boring if you have zero imagination of how to stage an action scene.

Part of me doesn't want to see him in any combat, but damn it would be good to see that green blade light up again.

Green and yellow are the GOAT saber colors.

Thank you. A lot of responses so far in this thread show a) a lack of imagination or b) too much imagination.

There's space in the spectrum between on one end a traditional Force Push and on the other end a Force Wormhole that you could do a lot of cool but relatively grounded stuff with as long as its presented right.

The Jedi philosophy puts a gloss of spiritual benevolence over naked forms of domination. I'd love if Luke had reached a point in his contemplations where he's realised this and transcended the need for such a showy, ostentatious display of violence. Where he's instead wracked with doubt about using the Force. It's one thing to demonstrate how powerful he is by making him the most adept at killing the most amount of people in the shortest amount of time, it'd be a lot more interesting if the film paid some attention to his perspective on violence and the force, whether there's any point to continuing an endless, pointless conflict between green and red lightsabers.

The lip-service paid to the Force as a mystical ideal which can provide enlightenment is at odds with the expectation that these movies should deliver large amounts of gratuitous violence.

I'd prefer full Yoda. Maybe he busts it out ONCE for like 5 seconds to help Rey out. Definitely doesn't need a full lightsaber battle with it.

Yep.

Luke not using a saber would be as stupid as Yoda using one. And thankfully stupid people aren't in charge of the franchise anymore.

The only reason they felt they had to have Yoda use one is because he has always been regarded as THE lightsaber master in the films.

I would like to see Luke walk into a room and try the Mind Trick, a few of them buy it and leave the room; the rest he just waves a hand or makes a fist and they collapse to the floor unconscious. Then he could make a statement about the Lightsaber being a tool of last resort.

i mean, it's whatever the narrative dictates. if it makes sense for him to go SSJ4 and use a bunch of CGI then fuck it, go all out

it's sort of like saying the U.S. has a bunch of nukes so what do they need ground troops for

I want to see luke go full on kenshiro, walk in the place with the hood up, badies drag it off, bearded luke is shown then luke force punches them all.
