Anyone else hope Luke never fights with a lightsaber in Ep8/9?

No, I want full lightsaber usage as much as possible. Luke should be the old Ronin come home to clean shit up

He's going to use a lightsaber, no use crying about it. Obi Wan looked even older in ANH, and he still used a lightsaber.

I hope he does

there won't be any cool use of force powers in these movies imo. Cool shit like force storms. I already thought Kylo stopping a laser bolt in midair was pretty good. they aren't topping that in these movies outside of stopping hundreds of blaster shots or bringing down a Star Destroyer. so I figure if insane force skills are off the table, may as well bring out the lightsaber. lightsabers are fucking cool anyway.

I just want one goddamn fight that makes me think "yup, this guy is a powerful force user". Compared to literally any other Star Wars media everyone in the movies looks likes a fucking padawan in terms of using the force.

I won't complain if Luke is the one Jedi to show off more than a weak force push or a slow ass force pull to slowly tow a small spacecraft, if Luke not using his iconic green saber is what it takes then so be it.

Using the Force is visibly tiring, though. Yoda is exhausted after lifting Luke's X-Wing out of the swamp and it takes Obi-Wan and Anakin - men in their prime - a few seconds to recover after they both push each other. Yoda after his lightsaber and Force duel with Palpatine is struggling quite a bit.

The Force is an energy, and expending energy is tiring work.

I hope we get to see Luke doing a mix of lightsaber and Force duelling. I remember Hamill talking about he and Prowse were told that the lightsabers were like big heavy claymores, thus their slower combat in the OT. Here's his chance to show off what he can do.. what a Luke who has spent decades training can do.

I might get back into the SW movies if the force actually becomes something of power like how it was initially promised. Imagine a lightsaber fight where Luke just uses a single finger to fight back, now that would be epic.

Aka: How to make Lightsabers seem shitty.

If I were one of the most powerful beings in the universe I would use a green lightsaber every goddamn day. It's a fucking movie about space wizards, why does everyone want see people get thought at to death? Break out the laser swords already.
Your goddamn right

Specifically on the purpose of fighting/combat, yes, I hope he withholds its use... Or rather, withholds its lethal capability. Deflecting blaster rounds, that'd be fine by me. Using it to disable enemy weapons, sure. Coldblood murdering enemies? Ehh.

I hope he does still have his lightsaber and uses it more in a utilitarian fashion, and not quite as a lethal weapon. His green saber is my favorite in the franchise, personally, so I'd love to see it show up... But I do kind of hope that Luke kinda wields it more in a typical Vash the Stampede style.

A scene like
the one with Vader at the end of
Rogue One but Luke not using a lightsaber would be pretty cool.

But I'd still want him to take out the lightsaber when shit gets serious. Since it's Star Wars you can make it super cheesy, like he keeps talking about how he's beyond using those things but then he ends up picking it anyway.

But this too.

Where is this from? A DBZ special?

I think he will use it a couple of times but it won't be absurd cartoon stuff like we saw in the prequels.

I need to see the green saber, maybe just when he's sparring with Rey.

Other than that, I want to see him pull star destroyers down from orbit, exploding TIE fighters etc.

Also, if force users have telekinesis, why don't they use it to make their own bodies fly?

Flying an (T-65) X-Wing with R2 into battle with veterans of Rogue Squadron alongside Blue Squadron led by Poe/BB-8 > Lightsaber battle.

I think it would be cliche as fuck if he just does the Obi-Wan thing and lets (the bad guy from TFA whose name I forget) kill him just to motivate Rey.

I don't think he's going to just let himself get killed but the wise old wizard always dies in this type of story. It's part of the hero's journey.

Maybe he and Rey face insurmountable odds to get to the bad guys; Luke goes all awesome and gets them 99% of the way there while using crazy force moves, then dies at the last hurdle, leaving Rey to her lightsaber battle.

That would be acceptable.

Keep in mind that traditional storytelling "rules" are always open to subversion/reinterpretation. There is no such thing as a fixed, immovable, unalterable law in storytelling.

He should not use it any real battles.

However they should just straight up rip off the darksabre training sequence from the recent season of Rebels and he should use his iconic green saber to train Rey.

I thought since Disney took over, the only things cannon are the movies themselves.

No.

Anything published after April 25, 2014 is canon, as well as the six original movies and the 2008 Clone Wars series. This includes books, comics, TV shows, games, etc.. There are a handful of exceptions, such as a Lego material (obviously, though some of it has been described as "canon adjacent") and some multi-part material that began before the cut-off date and continued after (SWTOR, some comic book arcs, some role-playing games), but otherwise you can safely assume anything you see released after that date to be canon.

The Lucasfilm Story Group, which was founded by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in 2013, coordinates and oversees all of the canon material, making sure it's all as consistent as possible. Another purpose of the group's creation was to eliminate the canon-tier system, so officially all canon material is now equally canon. It's also worth explicitly noting that all of this was internally decided by Lucasfilm, and the Disney buyout had no direct effect on the decisions.

I want to see some shit like Luke fighting underneath some big X-Wing/TIE Fighter battle and just casually redirecting TIE Fighter laser blasts out of the sky to kill guys. Kylo comes at him with a lightsabre and Luke just disdainfully unignites it for him, shaking his head in disappointment. I want to see Luke astrally project his own Force Ghost while still alive or some crazy shit; let Kylo strike him down and then reform his own body right there on the spot. "Oh, you thought you knew what the Force was about?"

He can bust out the lightsabre for a quick fanservice moment, I suppose, but what I don't need to see is a 65-year-old Mark Hamill in a hardcore action scene or, worse, Mark Hamill's face CG-pasted onto a younger body double doing flips and shit. Fight scenes starring senior citizens don't get me hyped.

Just show that he has a lightsaber. Uses it while training Rey. When fighting Kylo, show how powerful he has become. Including the reason he sidelined himself.

Who the fuck am I kidding? He will die in The Last Jedi.

The question is, why would he?

He should, in theory, be one of the most powerful beings in the universe. When you're as powerful as he should be, there's no need to dirty your hands with saber battles, you just force crush some bitches and go about your day.

I know that Expanded Universe is out the window, but is Luke really that strong?

Pretty much the entirety of Luke's "power level", for the lack of a better term, was EU bullshit. Jedi in no way reinforced the idea that he was exceptionally skilled or powerful.

Have him lose the lightsaber in the middle of a fight with someone who is actually putting up a good fight. You think all hope is lost, then he starts wrecking shit with force powers. I basically want the Obi-Wan scene from A New Hope, only Obi-Wan doesn't die.

I want Luke and Kylo to get drunk together and have a fight that's a shot-for-shot recreation of Ben Kenobi vs Darth Vader from the original.

The thread premise is so weird.

"Hey, who hopes that one of the more iconic warrior class type characters in modern cinema doesn't fight! In his most likely last appearance with the original actor"

If Luke never fights, there will be an internet shitstorm.
