Anyone else hope Luke never fights with a lightsaber in Ep8/9?

If they made fucking Yoda fight with a lightsaber in the most ridiculous way, you can bet your ass Luke will.

The beautiful thing is, they now know what NOT to do with Luke since Yoda's fight was so wacky.

I'm hoping for something similar to Obi Wan and Anakin's last fight in Episode III, which was way better.

I'm struggling to understand why people think Luke should be some super Jedi.

I mean, he *probably will be*, if only because Lucasfilm knows that's what people expect, and that's how he was in the old EU.

But as far as I can recall in the OT, he never displayed super advanced force abilities.

He was a novice Jedi in the OT. He never received proper training until he was rather old by Jedi standards and yet was able to go toe to toe with Vader, although Vader sandbagged some. And Palpatine also saw potential him.

Vader sandbagged *a lot*

And seeing potential doesn't equal all powerful Jedi.

I'm just asking the questions. I fully expect him to be some god-Jedi in the movie

they aren't topping that in these movies outside of stopping hundreds of blaster shots or bringing down a Star Destroyer

these would be great, the former made me picture neo. it would be great to see a moment like that in a star wars film, i'd love it if they really upped the ante on force powers.

i want some lightsaber fights but I'll be fine if luke doesn't participate.

He's had 30 years to train, study, meditate and whatever else, and he isn't confined by any Prequel era Jedi rules and regulations. And now he's being written and directed by Rian Johnson, too. I basically want to see the equivalent of Looper's time-travel-torture on Paul Dano scene, but with Star Wars.

Yeah that movies boring.

Vader
tho.

My statement stands. I love that scene and wish more of the movies had that level of brutality.

It's such a shame the rest of the film couldn't match it. I get it's fanservice but if it was some OC going HAM I still would've loved it. Rogue was just filled with original characters looking bored, acting bored, and being boring.

They're gonna do some clutch shit with the saber though, I can just feel it. It'd be the film's big crowd erupting moment.

I hope he calmly wades through an army of stormtroopers, but instead of deflecting with his lightsaber, the blaster bolts just curve around him and hit the guys on the other side like he's Fortune in MGS2.

You know they're gonna make him whip his lightsaber out because the general audience will complain about not seeing luke with his green lightsaber.

I hope we don't.

I know that Expanded Universe is out the window, but is Luke really that strong?

Anakin had the greatest Force potential of any being ever, well beyond Palpatine and Yoda, but given that he was basically in a half-dead/half-robot state for half of his life he was never able to come close to actually reaching that potential.

Luke has the same potential as Anakin, and he's been training for three-and-a-half decades, over which period he has researched the oldest Jedi knowledge, communed with multiple Jedi who managed to come back after death and joining the Force, pursued new knowledge, and (from the tiny bit we've learned from the TLJ trailer) appears to be taking an entirely novel approach to understanding the Force in a way the Jedi and Sith never did.

So yeah, Luke is definitely powerful as hell.

You know they're gonna make him whip his lightsaber out because the general audience will complain about not seeing luke with his green lightsaber.

I hope we don't.

I don't imagine Rian Johnson being held back by worries of how the audience may react.

Also, I highly doubt the general audience gives a shit one way or another. It would only going to be a subset of fanboys who would whine about the lack of the green saber, and then they'd go see it 15 times anyway.

Agreed. As set up in Empire Yoda shouldn't have suddenly gone ham with a sabre and neither should Like at this point.

If they must I hope nice clean green sabre used sparingly.

Come to think of it, I think there's a good chance of him using it during the extended flashback of his school's destruction. Maybe he'll have cast it aside after that.

Would I like to see the lightsaber? Hell yeah, you wanna talk about a hype moment I'm not sure much could ever top that in the franchise. But I just need one scene of Luke kicking ass, even if it's just the Force or whatever. Vader in Rogue One on steroids is what I'm talking about.

If I don't see Luke kicking ass with his green saber, I will riot.

If they kill off Luke without giving us a single scene with his green saber, most of the Star Wars community will riot.

Given how Hamill continuously mentioned during SWC that these films "aren't about" him anymore, I actually expect that his role in this film will be disappointing to most. He'll train Rey, she'll need to leave to save her friends/defeat the First Order/meet up with Finn, and Luke will say something about not wanting to fight again, it's past his time, or he's "getting too old for this", and will elect to stay on the island and will be absent from the last 40% of the film.

Hamill did say that, but Kathy Kennedy followed him up by saying Luke's role is very significant in this film.

My only hope is that one of these movies makes more money than avatar so Star Wars can finally qualify its greater cultural importance.

In this new canon, is Luke actually all that powerful? That legend shit doesn't count anymore. Kylo didn't seem to have much trouble breaking off and torching his new academy in front of him. He doesn't seem to be very emotionally strong either (running away into exile...yet leaving a treasure hunt to find him, ha ha.).

So, how strong is Luke exactly now?

Wouldn't mind if his force powers would be similar to the telekinesis guy from Legion

Just turn people into freaking cannonballs

We have no idea really. The only post-ROTJ story Luke has been in was Shattered Empire and that took place shortly after the film finished.

Snoke being afraid of him in TFA is the best hint that his powers have grown. Then again, we don't know how powerful Snoke is yet.

There's always the Darksaber possibility.
it won't happen, but hey, I like black lightsabers

Really though, it'd be cool if he used his green one, or created a new blue one while he was with the new Jedi Order.

I actually think it'd be cool if Luke used Darth's Red Lightsaber, showing hes not following the Jedi tradition and paying homage to his father.

Though I always suspected Kylo's saber was using Vader's cracked crystal, thus the unstable edge it had.
Maaaan, this would be so visually awesome, with such an easy to digest message. But they won't do it because Kylo likely has the crystal.

And even if he didn't people would bitch too much about Luke using red. (But it would fall in line with reports of how Mark Hamill was upset with some of his characterization)

I'm pretty sure Vader's lightsaber is gone. It fell down the same shaft the Emperor did.

There's a group of dark side fanatics in the Aftermath books called the Acolytes of the Beyond that buy what they think is Vader's lightsaber. Whether it actually is or not is another question.

As a kid I always thought the coolest thing about The Emperor in ROTJ was his sort of sarcasm toward Luke for relying on his lightsaber, since he obviously didn't need one to defend himself from Luke, even without Vader's intervention. Really disappointed me the way he used one in ROTS.

I do want to see Luke fire up the green lightsaber for nostalgia's sake, but I'm going to be really bummed out if his skill is portrayed by jumping and twirling around like Yoda and Palpatine. That really sucked.

Strange. You would think Luke kept that. Or destroyed it altogether. If he didn't take it, then surely it got lit with the Death Star 2.0.

I don't want to see them give Luke the same treatment they did Vader in Rogue One. I will be slightly disappointed if Luke is as feeble as Obi-Wan from the OT but also if he's as acrobatic as Yoda from the prequels. I hope there's a happy medium found.

The fanboy in me wanted to see Luke light that green saber in the teaser trailer. However, story wise it probably makes more sense that Luke has evolved beyond lightsabers, similar to the Emperor in ROTJ.

I hope we have a compromise that we see him briefly use one in the flashback to the temple burning down scene.

Luke should go into battle with Ray against Kylo and the Knights of Ren + New Order and when it looks like they might be out matched, Luke should remove his Jedi robes and reveal his secret weapon.

And the proceed to punch Kylo, The Knights of Ren and New Order right in the cock, with his mighty fist.

Seriously though, Luke needs to fight, we need some of that green lightsaber greatness.

Team Nosaber

I was 6 when I saw Luke ignite his green blade and make short work of Jabba's henchmen singlehandedly. Saved Han, Leia, Lando, Chewie. I fell in love.

But I was 6. I want to see Luke make it rain lightning bolts now.

I think that Rey and the Jedi kids will end up fighting against him in the end. Luke will be the ultimate bad guy - Snoke and has been manipulating them all to finally bring balance by destroying all of the dark/light and leaving nothing left but grey force users.
