Anyone else thinking of becoming a primarily portable gamer next generation?

Hasn't even crossed my mind.

I didn't buy a 61" 1080p LCD and home theater system for the occasional blu-ray movie. It was mainly for games 1st, TV/movie 2nd.

Oh and the fact that Japanese devs focus more on portables, means that I'm less likely to play games on them. I love the Western dev focus this gen and I'm loving every minute of it. Best gen ever, by far.

Another stealth NGP thread?.

Stealth? :lol

I've thought about it for a while. Not because I prefer handhelds but because the type of games I like are shifting to handhelds. If consoles keep making the kind of games I like, there will be no reason to do that. It would be a shame to be forced to stay on handhelds only, sometimes you just feel like playing on the big screen with great speakers etc.

No.

I can't see a day in the near future where I won't prefer sitting in front of a nice big TV with the home cinema cranked playing with a nice confortable controller. I'm impressed with handhelds, I have a DS, but to be honest, I never find myself reaching for it. I have an HTC Mozart for portable gaming (ilomilo ftw!) and play Xbox/PS3/Wii at home.

But yes, PSP2/NGP (have they decided which it is yet? Or does it actually have two names?) does look incredibly impressive, and I'll probably get one, but I'm sure the next wave of home consoles will garner much more of my attention.

I'm thinking of going with a 3D projector and a Razer Hydra (when it's released) as my main system. So, yeah. I'm not Japan. I like big. And immersive. Handhelds will be replacing nothing. They have their place.

Same here...but without losing the core design of handheld gaming (good for short bursts of gaming)

Just means you play different games at different times in different situations.

Personally, I prefer DS games because they seem to be better for play on the go than the PSP's full-on cinematic experiences.

There's no reason you can't have both types of games on the same system, letting you play them in either context.

Nope, thinking of primarily PC gaming though.
Why can't we just have fewer formats so I can play more games.

Also, what does the increasing power has to do with wanting to switch over to it? I don't care a whole lot about the graphics in the game, and when the next generation consoles come, the 3DS and PSP2 will look outdated again.

It's mostly more power consuming.

So am I actually.

With portables increasing in power, and with the subsequent Japanese development going to them, do you see yourself moving exclusively to portables for the next generation?

Of late, my consoles have just been gathering dust, not because their lineups have not been compelling, but because it's much easier for get gaming done during my commute. So I'm glad that we're seeing good progress in this field--the high end with 3DS/NGP and the low end with iOS, Android.

do tell us about the next generation consoles u apparently been tasting.

I haven't. It's just for my lifestyle, portables provide the best bang for the buck. My resources are limited--time and money.

I also take public transport, so gaming on the go, it's much easier and frictionless than console gaming for me.

Hypothetically, if Sony decided to skip the next console generation entirely and just decided to make super powered handhelds with TV out and controller support, I'd be totally cool with it.
This is a great idea. That way, you could eliminate another box from under the TV. Just make a little stand for it, built-in motion peripheral support ala PlayStation Eye with the devices camera. You could even code games that utilize the screen for maps/inventory/options etc.

No.

My PSP has been gathering dust despite 20+ games. My problem is that I'm a sucker for gadgets, the new PSP looks sexy as hell, but I'm afraid it will get the same amount of playing time as the first PSP. I never play on the go and when I'm at home I'd rather look at a 42" HDTV than a small handheld screen with headphones on.
This is me as well

I have a 20 minute drive to work, on break the last thing on my mind is playing a handheld, and when I get home I'd rather play a AAA game on my 56" HDTV then stair down at a 5" screen while my hands get cramped

I have a 3DS on reserve, and last night convinced myself I would reserve the psp2 but just thinking about the fact I haven't turned on my DS in a year, and even longer for my psp made me realize that I'm exclusively a console gamer. If I want some entertainment in the go I have my iPhone 4

I go where good games are regardless of platform.
This seems like a sound philosophy. I prefer playing games in the comfort of my own home anyway, so portability isn't really important to me.

Many people play their portables in their homes as well. I would imagine the number is insanely high compared to those that only use them on the go.

Yep, no more tethering for me.. done with TV-hogging gaming. It doesn't fit with my lifestyle.

This is another reason I'm making the switch. I like to multitask a lot when I game I'm finding. I find myself constantly pausing a game to flip to another channel to watch something and then back. Being able to pause the TV helps. However on my PC I usually have the TV on so I can look back and forth. It's easier to just look down at a hand held and back at the TV the way I do with my PC.

I already do most of my gaming on portables. The DS/PSP/iPhone combination are filled with way more innovation and fun than the console's offering this generation.

I am so excited now as it brings me back to 2005 again - one of my favorite years of gaming. Lumines, Kirby Canvas Curse, Mario Kart DS, Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center, Nintendogs, Liberty City Stories, Ridge RacerÂ…Â…..

entrement, I know you know, but you should have switched this generation.

I have to admit, making ports of Nintendo 64 games is a pretty novel concept

You remember the 1st year lineups of this generation's consoles, right?

Oh, I definitely do too. Even though I prefer other systems, I ended up with a DS, a PSP and 50+ games.

If the DS and PSP2 (what is this NGP thing. Are people really taking that Wired article seriously?) have the jrpgs again, then sure why not.

Edit: Actually no. I just won't buy a xbox360 2. Nintendo and Sony's console may be interesting.

This is my problem with handheld gaming too. I drive to work and I'd rather talk with co-workers and/or read some news during my lunch breaks. When I finally get time to game, which being a gamer-dad means around 10pm, I'd much rather play the AAA games in my backlog on my 61" HDTV + surround sound than some some screen +headphones.

I have a DSLite that hasn't been turned on in at least 8 months....probably a year though.

EDIT: Actually, that's not correct. The wifey & I played some Tetris DS while we waited for Tron Legacy to start. :lol

I'm leaning towards having no consoles or handhelds next gen. I've got more important things to focus my time on (my son) and I don't play games like I used to anyways.

I've primarily been a handheld gamer for about a decade now, and I can see myself not buying either of the next-gen portables. Nintendo and Sony both seem to have missed the point in a pretty epic way.

No and never. Portables have always been a nice side thing for me. I have never really put much thought in them and I probably never will. No portable game has given me the same amount of enjoyment as a console game. They are usually nice diversions, but that's about it. I had a DS and there wasn't much interesting on it. I have a PSP, but only a small library of games on it. They are quality games, but nothing really worth spending time on. I'll probably feel the say way about whatever comes out for the 3DS and PSP2. And while I think the PSP2 looks cool, I'm in no rush to get one. I like my console gaming and that's where I want to stay.

I'm already primarily a handheld gamer, but neither 3DS / PSP2 appeal to me at this point because most of the games that have been announced are too similar to controle titles for my liking. Just Layton vs Phoenix isn't enough to push me over the edge.

You're gonna have to turn in your gamer card, good sir. Hahaha. :P No, but seriously, it looks like the 3DS will have a good mix of console-like and more pick-up-and-play titles. Sony seems to be marketing the NGP as console gaming on the go...

Already am. 90% of my gaming experience is played on the DS and the PSP. The only game I have played constantly is Bad Company 2 on the console. And you know what guys, it feels great. While you lot moan about the framerate and texture somewhere I am enjoying Dissidia pheonix wright 3

Not primary, but I am over buying another console. Most of my vent buddies agreed. PC gaming will be my main platform, and then my handheld will supplement. Plus I feel like the PC does Western games that fit my tastes really well. Where as I feel handhelds give me what I really want in terms of Japanese games aka a lot of what we'd use to get on consoles.

I've been primarily a portable gamer this gen, DS mostly, so it's certainly a possibility that that trend will continue with the 3DS and PSP2.

i grew out of handhelds once i became an adult, i dont play games on my phone either (except solitaire on the shitter)

Already am. After just preordering a 3DS and finding out NGP preorders start Friday, so it shall remain. Though I don't see myself getting a NGP for a while if ever.

Nah, I could never limit myself like that.

I'm curious as to what games will push me over the edge and get me to buy these upcoming portables, though.

hahahaha, no.

I didn't drop $2,500 on this sweet PC for nothing and my consoles are still providing infinite amounts of entertainment. A portable system will be for those days outside.

I'm thinking about going mainly PC with handhelds. I've used the PS3 for its media capabilities more than games, and the Wii for the occasional mario. On the other hand, I do play the DS on a regular basis. I think puzzle/adventure games, or games you can just play in short bursts are starting to appeal to me more. Good for before going to sleep, or when I'm lounging on the sofa ;)

That said, it really depends on what the next-gen consoles have to offer. I may very well fall for the hype (again)!

No fucking way. NGP and 3DS look sick and I will buy both, but I'd never be able to do ALL of my gaming on a 5-inch (or smaller) screen. Shit will make you go blind, bro.

Yep. Preordering my 3DS from Target today. I knew this gen would be my portable only gen months ago.

Handhelds + PC would be nice but I don't think I will be able to resist whatever shiny new consoles come out next gen.

fuck it im gonna be bold and declare this right now: next gen, consoles will be like laptops. fully portable with screens and everything

im predicting portability will be the #1 selling point for almost every known piece of tech in the coming years

to answer the OP, i already am. i game on my laptop, my ds lite, and my psp go. by next year at this time, i will upgrade both handhelds.
