Anyone else thinking of becoming a primarily portable gamer next generation?

I'll remain primarily a PC gamer with handhelds on the side. I'll grab a 3DS for sure, and maybe a NGP down the line, especially since I missed the PSP and can pick up some of that off PSN.

Other than that, the only thing that could sell me on Nintendo's next gen console is a 2D Metroid (or a Prime successor, but I'm not holding my breath), so hopefully that remains a handheld affair. I skipped the PS3 and 360 this gen, but my PC has filled that gap nicely. I'll borrow a friend's PS3 for The Last Guardian next year, but otherwise, there hasn't been anything "must-buy" on either for me.

As others have said, the vast majority of Japanese games already go to DS and PSP, so there's no reason to think that will change in the next generation. If I had the choice, I would rather play the games on the PS3, but the NGP would be fine as well.

Primarily, though? No.

I don't. Microsoft's plan is to "own the living room". They want the Xbox brand to be like VHS and DVD players to people, a machine you keep on the shelf in your living room that provides you with entrainment. Not that I wouldn't love portable home consoles or anything, I loved that the Gamecube was designed to be small and easy to carry (a freaking handle!).

And that's a plan they lost big time this gen when the living room family audience went to Wii.

Kinect is the fightback. They won't go away from that unless they lose another gen big time - and even then they'll probably try to spin it somehow.

Mmmm not yet...

For me some experiences are better enjoyed in a handheld and some in a home console/PC:

Handhelds BEST:

- Puzzle games (like Meteos)
- Small but good RPGs (like Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable)
- 2D Action/Plataforming games (like Castlevania)
- SRPG (like Fire Emblem or Advace Wars)

Home Console / PC BEST:

- 3D Action/Plataforming games
- FPS
- Strategy games
- Action rol games
- Simulation

I think that Adventure, driving games and fighters are tied in both categories.

Of course there are some exceptions. But for me, handhelds are a step further in some aspects and waaaay to back in others. And that is not even arguing the overall quality, battery life and comfortability (seriously, after playing 2 hours straight with my PSP lying on my bed my thumb always hurts)

When the original PSP launched I played it for hours on end. It was the single best thing that had happened gaming in a long while and I was sporting an 50+ games collection on the PS2. Lumines, Metal Gear Ac!d, Ridge Racer and WipEout became a way of life for me. I kept at it for almost 2 years playing wherever I went.

Suddenly it just died out for me. World of Warcraft and Steam happened and what once was my favorite console slowly started to gather dust. Since then I've been trying to get back in the game. I've spent 30 odd hours with Final Fantasy VII on a trip back and forth on trains and airplanes but it doesn't compare. The PSP2 will be amazing and I'll have a blast but a handheld will never again truely be my main platform.

No, but portables will probably take a bigger chunk of the pie. PC gaming is still in good shape so that will stay the same, but I wouldn't be surprised if I only went Playstation next gen as far as consoles go (until Fire Emblem shows up on Nintendo's console, anyway).

The opposite actually. As I get older, I don't have much time to be playing games on the go.
I couldn't care less about the portability aspect, either. Handhelds are just where the good games are now.

I don't think I'll ever be primarily anything. I play everything I own pretty equally. I can't predict what platform awesome games will be released on.

No, but I may cut out a system or two next gen. I haven't played either my 360 or PS3 very much since I built a competent PC gaming rig 18 months ago.

If western exclusives continue to dwindle, and Japanese dev support shifts further to handhelds, I could probably survive on 3DS, NGP, and one console. But we will see. This generation, I would have a hard time choosing between Wii and PS3 first party/exclusives. I love my 360, but there is less to give up. I may have to wait 6-12 months, but most of the best XBLA games eventually release on Steam or PSN, and I'm not really attached to their first party franchises. I'd miss out on maybe 2-3 games a year I wanted and could not get elsewhere.

No, but along with PC, it could help tide me over if the next consoles cost $500 at launch and take a while to get rolling.

This too. I'm done buying consoles near-launch. Jumped on the 360/wii/PS3 1-2 years after each system launched and I don't feel like I missed much. Probably could have waited even longer on the PS3 if I didn't want a unit that could still play PS2 games.

3DSPSP2PC here.

If fighting games would hurry and make the move to PC as well, I would have zero use for a console.
Ditto. These new systems, combined with my G2 and the Playstation Suite really spell out a portable + PC future for me.

there is a reson I invested quite some money into a monitor and TV and it sure as fuck isn't to further destroy my eyesight staring at a 5 inch screen

also never realy been a fan of jrpgs and platformers so there is nothing drawing me towards handhelds

I'm already a high-end portable gamer, having a notebook, but I'm seriously considering the NGP for use as a portable JRPG machine.

I'm 100% done with consoles.

I enjoy portable gaming more, but I still enjoy epic stuff from time to time. Not to mention console gaming offers multiplayer action for me as well. And as long as Nintendo keeps making awesome stuff on consoles, they got me by the balls really.

Despite owning all the home consoles, I rarely touch them these days. Yet I've been playing DS and PSP quite a lot.

I like the convenience of handhelds. You don't have to wait for someone to finish watching Eggheads to play your games.

I've never been much of a portable gamer, despite owning both a PSP and DS. Just never play them enough. When I'm home, I play consoles, when I'm out I use my iPhone to entertain myself.

Can't really get excited about either the PSP2 or 3DS.

I already play more portable than console.

The games are just more appealing to me. I think it has something to do with smaller teams and lower development costs = cooler games.

Portable+occasional/indie PC gaming will be my future I think.

This gen of consoles, whilst having some great gaming experiences, has overall killed my interest in console gaming. Things like hardware failures and waggle gimmicks have just tempered my enthusiasm. Also I've grown to dislike, even resent, long console games, it feels like a literal waste of time, especially with some genres (grind-heavy RPGs, online gaming playing the same thing over and over - e.g. fighting games, FPS).

PC and handhelds for me from now on (unless theres a new Nintendo console). Most of the must-have 360/PS3 games I can get as superior versions for much cheaper on Steam.

My main point is basically this though - it's a nice hot day outside, I have a day off work and I feel like playing a game. Am I going to sit inside infront of a TV? Like hell I am. I love having the freedom of playing a game wherever I want. I can take a 3DS into the garden, or run/walk to the local park, sit down to play a game for a while before making for the way back.

At night if I'm not seeing the girlfriend, or going out, I will sit down infront of the TV and play a game, sure. But I much prefer the freedom and portability of handhelds. I do quite a bit of travelling too - if I'm set to go to sheffield on the train, and stay in a travel inn over a couple of nights, I like being able to take my games with me - I'm not going to be lugging a PS3/PC around, and I certainly wouldnt be able to play those on the train.

I take it you don't live in the South. The last thing I want to do on a hot day here is go outside.

You're wrong. I live in the south. As south as you can get. Bournemouth.

Not everyone lives in the USA.

I ditched 360 and PS3, just have PC and ds/psp now. I don't find myself without a good game to play, anywhere, at any time.

Where do you live? I'm in Houston and July is really the only month where I purposely avoid being outside.

Us in the UK call Cornwall and Southampton 'The South', and I'm sure it's the same for most countries - but anyway.

Yeah, but that upper case S denotes I'm taking about a specific "the South."

It's like I said Tim Leary is dead, and you said: No he isn't! Tim Leary is the pastor of my church! Obviously we're talking about 2 different people.

I'm pretty much there already-80%+ handheld gamer.

If the NGP is priced at 250 with games hopefully around 40, I will definitely be a portable gamer this year.

I'm betting you won't "be a portable gamer this year" then.

Been thinking of quitting entirely.

PC is doing awesome lately with Steam! Love buying a game and owning it. Update pc? Still have games there.

FF13 was the knife in my console gamer's heart... :'(
