Anyone else thinking of becoming a primarily portable gamer next generation?

I cant stand playing games on a portable system, the games are fun, id gladly buy them as content fora console, or god forbid the damn systems let you line out to a tv.

But some small ass screen? fuck that.

If I could easily do multiplayer from anywhere (read: 4G speeds) and have awesome battery life, I would probably go full on portable.

I think portable gaming is more immersive than PC or Console, since you aren't locked to the big stationary TV. It's like reading a good book.

I might be going 3DS only for a while. It'll probably be my only mode of play in the next generation simply because it'll probably be the cheapest.

Steam/iOS bro

Nope.

I might be a PS3/PSP2/3DS player next year.

I'm thinking of remaining a Wii/DS/PC gamer for at least 2 more years, then maybe will get a 3DS if there's a cool revision out and the games are there. They probably will, as MK3DS will have come out by then, Super Street Fighter IV 3D will be dirt cheap and there might be a new NSMB/Rhythm Tengoku/Ouendan.

Failing that and/or if I don't have much money, I'll probably still be playing mostly on my Wii (platformers for life + Rhythm Tengoku + maybe Zelda + maybe DQX + Monster Hunter 3 + Zangeki) and on the PC. Minecraft will be so awesome 2 years from now, and I'll probably get the latest Mount & Blade as well. Might buy Diablo 3 at some point too, not sure. I'll have to buy DQIX at some point too, looks awesome.

Yes, pretty much all the games I mentioned for the Wii and DS have already been released, but I don't buy many games a year, and I was cured from the day-one-itis.

On the offchance Nintendo really gets it right with the Wii 2 (like, not making ultra-retarded choices and actually following up on their promises this time), I might get that too. I'm doubtful that Microsoft/Sony will bring something that caters to my tastes, but who knows. The PSP2 certainly doesn't.

Well, of course ;)
If it wasn't for Steam I wouldn't have lasted this long without an HD console.
IOS, well...I'll probably own an Ipod Touch soon but I'll have it for a while so I won't be able to play any of the major titles it might get in the next gen.

My intentions are to do so - I was planning on sticking with the 3DS for as much as possible. This is because it is obviously cheaper and also forces me somewhat to be more focused on playing the games I actually buy.

Inevitably I will play PC games - I always have and that han't change - but already I can see myself drifting away from that. Dawn of War II: Retribution and The Witcher 2 are the only big games currently in development that I'm really excited for.

Also it will be impossible for me to ignore the next Nintendo Home Console because I adore the Wii and it would be very difficult to ignore their excellent games.

I've been handheld only for about 2 years now and it feels great.

I haven't touched my TV in months. By now I've basically decided that I'm skipping the whole entire "HD Generation."

EDIT: Part of it is I'm growing to dislike "big" electronics over time. Massive TVs, huge consoles, a mess of wires and controllers. I honestly appreciate the way handhelds are entirely small, modest, self-contained units, and this is part of why I prefer them over consoles even around the house.

It's sorta of akin to the way for me (and many others) desktops lost their appeal as laptops improved over the years. And now tablet computing is taking my attention away from laptops.

Possibly. I am having less and less time to sit in front of a tv and when I do I would rather watch something with the wife then play a game. I could definitely see myself going 3DS/PSP2 at some point.

Primarily probably not, but I can see myself playing even more on them. Mostly because it seems like that's were Japanese games are going.

No. My job doesn't require massive amounts of time spent traveling.

I enjoy and embrace the PC, handhelds and home consoles.

Aw hail naw. I'd much rather play my games on a big screen with a proper controller, instead of hunched over a tiny screen and crippling my hands with tiny controls. I played Valkyria Chronicles 2 for over fifty hours on the PSP, and I think I permanently damaged my eyes and neck.

Never had much an interest in handheld.

Could never see myself playing a gears, fallout, mass effect, etc type game on handheld.

With XBLA/Indie Games, it seems like the few handheld experiences that I might want are actually on the console now as well. Not the exact same games most of the time, but, something like Limbo is just as good as anything I've seen on the hand helds.

I don't really like portables but i will get a NGP so i will be both .
I do play some games on portables but i barrow a PSP or DS from friends .
This will be first gen where i buy one for my self.

If this haven't been mentioned already I'm ready for a hybrid console/handheld, portable platform.
Me too, I'm secretly hoping PSP2 is PS4 and can come with a 'DockStation'. It's not going to be, but I think next-gen, we'll get something like that.

I did it on the eve of the Xbox 360 launch. I was a DS only gamer and I had a hell of a time with it.

I think I felt betrayed by the next-gen: the HD, the price, the game price, the early launch...It all felt like I wasn't being included at the time (I was a college student, not 12).

Right now, I see the same thing occurring again, but for different reasons. I like the personal nature of a handhelds, and there is definitely a "neato" aspect to both new systems. I like tossing on some headphones and sinking into my bed or having sports on while I game because time is precious.

I feel a little betrayed by these clunker consoles not making the jump to 1080p, 60 fps, and post processing. I'm happy with the graphics, I just need performance. The motion ventures are also a little off putting.

I like the unknown and excitement of launches. I like seeing who will win, and I have a greater fondness for the early games when looking back at any system.

This gen I bought all the consoles, all the handhelds, and a gaming PC... I can say with high certainty I won't be doing that again.

I'll definitely keep buying whatever Nintendo makes. I'll probably still get a Playstation console too. But with my gaming PC, my 360 is completely useless so I won't be getting another Xbox. And if NGP costs more than 3DS I'll be waiting for a good while on a price drop.

Current predictions for me: 3DS, Wii 2, PS4 for next gen with NGP in the 'maybe down the road' category.

Nice, neat, just a handful of consoles to worry about... Yet still having access to probably 95% of new games that come out. But no, not handheld only just yet.

You are supposed to take breaks. Don't blame the handhelds for your lack of self control.

Most definitely not. In-fact, both the 3DS and NGP have put me off handheld gaming almost completely.

In the case of the 3DS, poor battery life and high (UK) price combined with games that appeared two generations ago for todays console prices. As if that wasn't bad enough, you also get the handheld VC service designed to be played with games with a d-pad which is in the same awkward position on the 3DS that the analog nub is on the PSP.

In the case of the NGP - big HD widescreen, dual analogs. I might as well stick with the TV console. Don't get much bigger than a 42" flat telly.
