Anyone else upgrading PC instead of next-gen launch purchase

Thinking about it more and more. I was never planning on getting a console at launch so I'll see how I feel.

I got a 770 on the cheap(had a 260 before) so that'll probably be my only upgrade until I can get a worth i7 920 upgrade.

I will probably buy some slightly nicer stuff for Titanfall in March. Like $300 or $400 worth of low-end gpu, mobo, and cpu which would still end up being more than what I currently have. A fully fledged build is a loooooooooooong ways away though.

am curious about titanfall. it is a source engine game, so unless its heavily modified, i can't imagining it requiring a lot to max.

on the contrary, I've been hemming and hawing at upgrading my i5-750 and 5770 for like two years and next-gen has caused me to put it off even further. When I can eventually get back around to iphone development will probably be when I upgrade my CPU and GPU to something more modern.

Fuck no. I chase the dragon with the PC every few years. So they DON'T coincide with a generational launch.

We're (hopefully, if any of these damned offers would go through!) moving into a house and my PC won't be close to the HDTV anymore so I'm not upgrading just to be stuck in the 3rd bedroom. I like my comfy couch (which right now I also play PC games on). But going forward I'll be doing less and less PC gaming based on the geography of the home. I never build a super computer so the graphics/performance won't be a huge jump in comparison to the PS4.

I originally preordered a PS4 when they were available back in June. But as time passed, I realized that there arenÂ’t really any launch games I want enough to drop $500+ for one. Kill Zone just isnÂ’t enough for me yet. So I cancelled my preorder and got a new R9 280x.

So for less money ($300) I now have a system that can play most of the other ‘big launch games’ such as Ghosts, BF4, AC4, 2K14, with better performance than either PS4 or XB1. I should add I also have my PC hooked up to my TV for some comfy PC gaming. So that probably helps too.

I will definitely pick up a PS4 eventually, probably next summer / fall when some of the big exclusives come out and they have all the kinks and features added and worked out.

But a PC upgrade in lieu of a launch system pick up seems like a pretty wise and cost-effective alternative at this point with the current games available.

Not 2K14. Pc has the last gen version.

And I'm doing both. PC for most multiplatform games. PS4 for exclusives and mp.

It's definitely a viable alternative. I would be putting a new video card in mine if I needed (as much as I want a new card, a 7970 is still plenty powerful).

That PC/WiiU combination should be good until the first price drop for the One and PS4. At that point there should be enough of a worthwhile library for me to pick them up.

Need to wait til at least mid gen to upgrade...doesnt make sense to upgrade a card now if multiplat games arent going to really take advantage of it until then anyway and by that tie current cards will be much cheaper

I'll upgrade later on when the GPUs are cheaper and more future-proof once the next-generation multiplatform games aren't cross-generational any longer.

The games next year or so will be much more demanding than what a current affordable GPU will be able to cover.

I was considering the upgrade route as opposed to plopping cash down on a console as I've been a PC gamer for likely longer than many here have been alive, however, it really doesn't fit my lifestyle any longer.

I also like the console exclusives.

Decided to grab a 780 over the ps4 while whatever kinks get worked out and better games come out on the ps4.

Just upgraded my card to a R290x and getting also PS4.

But had it been one or the other it would be the PS4. PS4 should last longer, and I would hold out on a GPU(if you plan on keeping the same card for years) for Maxwell.

My nextgen budget got eaten by virtual Spaceships. My "unborn" WiiU (and its games/controllers) is now two Auroras, a Freelancer, a 350R and a Cutlass as well as some other kickstarter pledges. I will, however, spend roughly a PS4's worth on a GPU once the dogfight alpha of Star Citizen releases. I would not do that if I hadn't gotten all those Ships.

So, in a way, yes, my nextgen budget evaporated for the sake of PC games and upgrades.

hmmm... i was thinking of doing this as well... but then i realize my ps4 would be collecting dust at launch because i'd rather play ac4 and bf4 on pc with better framerate and resolution.

Xone has the better launch line up for me, but piece of shit hardware for ÂŁ400 is never happening in a million years.

PS4 has acceptable hardware, but the games look lame as fuck.

PC cards are in a weird flux currently, ATi has beast chips but they're equipped with gak cooling solutions. the 780's need another price drop...and there's the ever looming shadow of 20nm next year.

Blue balls all around TBH.

I keep hearing that 20nm isn't happening next year.

Probably so, but I only have built a new PC about three years ago. Might upgrade it when there will be a new generation of video cards, but little interest in buying a new console.

Nope. My PC is pretty much next-gen ready. Only thing I've been thinking about getting is a bigger/better monitor. I'll probably upgrade my video card next year or so.

No chance from me I can see why some people do it but I have a imac 27" that I use for post production and music. To me a computer is for work and productions. Also I am a playstation fan and couldn't care less for the marginal performance gains from dropping ÂŁ400+ on a GFX card. Also I am in love with the work Sony studios does and to me gaming would be very hollow without those experiences. Even though I do love some multi-plats usually even the highest quality ones are only just about on a par with stuff like Uncharted, TLOU, the Gt series GOW and quantic dream (personal favourites of mine)

I do get it though it's like me pining after a Rickenbacker 330 so pricy and I'l get one eventually but some people may say a guitar is a guitar.

I got fed up with everything over the past couple of months and decided to cancel my PS4 and XB1 pre-orders. I'll wait a year and see how everything shakes out with them. Hopefully there will be a better picture then.

In the mean time, I'm going to upgrade my graphics card.

Couldn't pass up HD7950 for $170 AR. Upgraded everything else wholesale for the first time in a while, got a i5 4570 (non-K) system that's ripping through everything. I'm stuck at 1920x1080 as I'm hooked up to my TV, considering how good steam sales have been I should be saving way more than I would have if I went the next-gen route.

I built a new pc in september to replace my 2009 rig, next gen consoles look pretty underwhelming, will wait a few years for killer exclusives to collect up and price drops.

Nope, my PC is fine for now. I don't fret over minor GPU upgrades so I'll be set for 2 years about.

PS4 is well worth the price of entry and I'm interested in a few of the launch games. If I wasn't then I'd save my money on both fronts.

This man speaks the truth in all three topics.

I am waiting another 2 years, PC currently have enough power to walk over Ps4/Xb1, but since devs will be lazy I will hold out, so this way even a mid range PC 2 years from now will handle all those lazy ports galore..

PC all the way.

This console generation is shaping up to be the lamest in history.

- Biggest power discrepancy to PC ever.
- Monthly cost for multiplayer gaming.
- Season pass shenanigans (although on PC, too).
- Shit awful launch games.
- Xbone can't even do 1080p.
- PS4 can't do 1080p BF4 or 60fps Killzone multiplayer (huge dealbreakers for me).

In order for me to jump in I'm going to need to see a game that really blows me away.

I did upgrade my PC in september with an 780gtx and I did plan on buying the PS4 but I have lately become unsure... thinking about buying a 144hz screen instead. Not sure, being apart of a console launch is fun in itself.

I upgraded my PC with an EVGA 780 SC and a 120GB Samsung Evo SSD. Now I can watch my backlog of Steam games grow in style.

Personally I think the new consoles offer terrible value for money. The consoles themselves are relatively cheap, but there is no way being locked into a Sony / MS storefront can offer the value or range of experiences the PC can.

I preordered a ps4 the moment it became avalible but canceled it about a month ago. I will get a ps4 sometime next year probably, but for now i upgraded to an 280x. I regret nothing

No. I'm going next gen. That hardware will get me through another 6 maybe 8 years. My computer still has legs on it. I can run BF4 on medium at 60 fps without trouble. That's good enough for now.

Aready have a good PC. Will go next-gen as well, cause there will always be stunning exclusives down the line. That goes for the Wii U as well. Mario 3D World will likely be fantastic.

Some part of me wants to get on the next gen hyped train.

Then there's another part of me that says no.

I did build a PC summer 2013 , i will buy Ac4 on that one and I rebought most of my ps3 library during steam summer sale and some pc exclusives, will only buy Ps4 for second son and destiny next year until then i am covered.

Not 'upgrade', necessarily, but I did decide to build a PC instead of buy a next-gen console. So I've got a massive library of games available, many of which already have next-gen graphics, modding ability, 60fps on normally 30fps games and also the ability to upgrade in time for some beautiful, insane Oculus Rift goodness in 2015.

Couldn't be happier. I got to play some next-gen games a week ago and I was underwhelmed by it. Pretty, but really nothing particularly special compared to whats achievable on the PC right now, even with a mid-range rig like mine. I was genuinely excited to play these games too, I was not looking to justify my PC purchase. I was completely expecting to come away half tempted to buy a PS4, but even Killzone didn't look nearly as special as I thought it would. Driveclub was the most impressive game I saw and its not even my type of game.

I'm quite excited, as I think I've jumped in on PC gaming at the right time.

Shitty time to upgrade imo. DDR4 will be releasing any day now, you don't want the same RAM as them consoles do ya?

With prices and a budget in mind, the ideal time to revamp your pc will be about two years into the console generation. Aim for the newest chipset that comes out around that time and get a fast CPU for it. I'd get a mid-range GPU as this will be the only component you should ever need to upgrade for the following 6-8 years. The RAM situation might be tricky as far as price goes; hopefully 8gb sticks of DDR4 will be affordable.

I'm still rocking a $900 PC from 2008. Upgraded to a 4890 prematurely when the 8800gt crapped out. Only mistake I made was starting with two sticks of 1gb DDR2, where I quickly added another two sticks but now my board is full and I could really go for 8 gigs right now heh. Definitely feeling the squeeze at 1080 these days but I don't mind dropping settings and there's a huge number of games I've yet to play.

I think it may end up going that way. I still haven't decided if I'm going to drop my Amazon pre-order. But I think it will happen. The more I think about what games are there at launch, and what I can get for the money to upgrade my PC, the PC comes out on top. A new case, new mobo/cpu is really all I need.

Just don't know yet.

Did a year ago. Console exclusives very rarely interest me.

Might buy a WiiU when it has more games to select from, but otherwise I'm sticking to PC. Need PC for WRPG's, strategy games and adventure games. Consoles doesn't really help me there.

Might upgrade some part of it if The Witcher 3 demands it of me.

Going to wait till mid next year. I was really surprised at how my mid range setup (i5 750, 660, 8gb) ran bf4 at higher settings and res than the ps4 version so I'll think I'll stick with it for multi plats for now. However I still really want Infamous so still getting a ps4 for that and other exclusives.

There's always something better coming up. Never really a bad time to upgrade unless new GPU's are just around the corner.

Keep up with the PC curve and worry less about the consoles.

Sticking to PC. May upgrade in a year or two when Star Citizen comes out.

No console exclusives that interest me at the moment.

Sold my pre-ordered PS4 for $50 over retail.

Going to buy another 680 for SLI.

Keeping my XB1.

Will cop a PS4 by Christmas or shortly after I'm sure.
