Real talk @NeoGAF EviLore -- How do we get user activity back up to pre-RE levels? Is there a hope in hell of this ever happening again? Are activity trends still seeing positive inflection?

The most valuable part of GAF was the insanely high user activity that turned this site into the best real-time breaking news aggregator I had ever seen. I learned about some of the most important stories of the past decade within MINUTES of it happening - well before CNN would break the news. Now RE has the users and the excellent user activity, but the alt-left moderation makes the site an unusable echo chamber.

Look on the first page of RE off-topic. Half of the threads show the latest post "a moment ago" (i.e. <1 min). Now look at GAF. It's still like a graveyard.

I don't have the answers. I know some will say "I like the slower pace these days!" but that's not true for the vast majority of people. Activity > content >> activity >>> content >>>> etc.. Maybe there needs to be some kind of mass sign-up drive. Or some kind of incentive system to get people to post more/create more threads. Hopefully smart people than me have better ideas.

The difference is that now it feels much more ok to post "centrist" views here. Center opinions became increasingly more hated in OldGaf and trying to look things from many sides and see if there's a middle ground felt that you absolutely have to pick your words right or you will get dogpiled or even get banned. Now it doesn't feel like that anymore here and while I can't say what it is on Era as I don't visit that site much at all I would assume it at least hasn't got better there. Like, it's kinda amazing how it even could be so that you felt you were walking on eggshells for trying to find a middle ground.

Made an account on RE recently but only to contact someone, and I read programming and Apple OTs from time to time. But I'm not into the narcissistic political and victimhood culture that's taken root there, so I find the place pretty unbrowsable. Just not that big on forums in general these days anyway, which is why I don't post here too often.

I have been on NeoGAF since 2005-2006 and never even considered leaving during the enema. Re-signed up when GAF was reborn and absolutely loving it.

Normal, intelligent adults can converse again now that most of the special children have departed.

But that place is totally nuts at times, for reasons already mentioned. Some bans just boggle the fucking mind but here the moderation is much more reasonable. The few bans I've seen were deserved.

I visit both. I preferred it when it was just all under the old GAF, but that's not coming back. Both sites have their pros and cons. The hostility between the two is stupid. I've mentioned this before but I think it's embarrassing that the top two community threads here on GAF are still both about people complaining about ResetEra.

Honestly I preferred their previous setup, especially on mobile with having the navigation buttons at the bottom.

Basically Era is good to read/browse and GAF is good to post and discuss.

In an ideal world GAF would have maybe 50% more traffic than it does currently. Too much is bad as it makes it impossible to properly engage in conversation since everything moves so quickly but GAF is currently a little light on content and could do with a boost. Hopefully that will just come with time.

We decided to let this thread run individually as opposed to merging it with the general off site community discussion. As has been noted era does have a captive audience due to fast aggregation - something GAF was noted for. An amalgamation of reddit, 4chan and all other sources in one big pot. And as a result, some members of that captive audience may want to have a voice in a seperate thread than the latest meltdown highlight. And it's right that we give those honest voices a platform to have an input.


It's not lost on our own staff when certain newGaf policies, standards and ideas supplant those already in place at other places. So to address some of the more pertinent points made in here


1. Traffic and members are increasing, and post count at the start of November was still trending up significantly. Thread creation is not as active as posts per thread, which mirrors what we see - generally the new/?old? cohort of posters prefer a longer running thread with more tangential discussion than starting new posts. Whether this is a hangover from GAF or just laziness/cohort preference is still being identified;
2. When we are trending upwards there's a lot of investment when making a change so our policy at the moment is changes that are manageable and dynamic/fluid. While not ideally our first choice, we didn't lock ourselves out of rolling the old themes back if the community were vociferous about wanting them back. This takes a little more time, but is more graciously received as a choice rather than 'have this and like it'. So site improvements are coming, site enhancements and integrations are coming and we're going to use them to establish a 'pull' mechanism for member growth in terms of USP's;
3. Our next big update will be really exciting for 'communities'. Splitting it out was a precursor to the work we have on simmer at the moment. The harsh reality is that trying to just do what GAF did ten years ago won't be enough to distinguish it in the same way. As an enabler the fresh start we got to have was really a chance for us all to sit down and examine how we can recapture the magic GAF had in its early days in the modern environment of reddit, discord, 4chan, twitter etc. GAF had a reputation and a stigma. With the advent of resetEra, the stigma was definitely transplanted, and it's up to us here to rebuild the reputation. You can't just pick up years of heritage, archival and importance and try to bully your self importance onto people and press;
4. All the staff love this place, genuinely. And what we want is to foster that tight community feel. The ones you'd often see when teams were making mods for games and engaging on a direct basis with excitement and fervour. We ask people just enjoy games really and discuss them.
5. For those users on both sites, it costs nothing to float the same type of thread if you are interested. At the very least you'll get more points of view. Probably a broader set of perspectives if that makes sense. If I may politely ask one question in return to those who have weighed in - You gifted era a community (some bad, some great) - the question really should be 'what are the custodians doing to keep you?', because right now it seems it's just the user generated content that is keeping you captive. UGC that you are then heavily moderated on and for if it doesn't align with whatever 'issue of the day is'. In response, I will only iterate what i can - please do keep popping in and even post a bit, we believe over the coming months with the improvements we have scheduled we will demonstrate that what we're doing or attempting is genuinely in the interest of bringing people/players together. Not only to discuss the latest industry article but to bring back those in depth discussion on level design, character creation and RPG mechanics as examples.

I kind of hated it here when it was too PC in the last years but now I feel it's perfect. You actually have freedom to voice your opinions and people generally respect each other.

I think I visited Resetera twice since its inception and I feel no urge to go there.

It's been a while since I posted here. I have commented this before, but Era is basically an alternate Gaf. The only ones I noticed about Era is the moderation is very very strict. I don't have any grudges with either forum's community or management though.

I joined GAF, but was still pretty inactive back then, barely checked the topics here. ( wasn`t really checking any gaming forums, just game sites or youtube ) Then when the big controversy happened and they made resetera I joined there too.

Recently got there banned for the stupidest thing, because mods there can't just give a warning for the first time. After being banned for like a week for nothing and then constantly reading the stupid shit they say in their echochamber I said fuck it and just provoked a life time ban.

I still use their forum for fast news and to laugh over the incredible stuff they say about heated topics. ( head hurting stuff ) xD

But I would never wanna participate in discussions there ever again, you just can't if you so much as slightly disagree with them.

I don't post on ErA because of the socially enforced one sidedness. It makes twitter pile ons seem open minded. I'd much rather have a discussion with people I disagree with who are willing to listen. That said some of the "gamergate" associated talking points and videos posted to the game forum of late come from a similar echo chamber. I post on a few of those forums like KiA sometimes because no one is going to ban me but I do get mass downvoted if I ever question "the narrative", especially if it overlaps with right wing talking points parroted by people coming from TheDonald. I found KiA by Google search at the height of NeoGAF election insanity. At the time KiA was less politically aligned but it seems like those forums have become increasingly right wing as other forums have become politically one sided, maybe explaining why there are so many conservative/reactionary posters here. I don't fear getting banned on ErA it's just it's like talking to a bunch of Mormons, with page after page of piling on with low value comments drowns everything else out. One of the advantages of a slower going forum is the possibility of having an actual conversation not just dumping over emotional tirades into the void of a 40 page thread

Spamming an entire forum with "white people are trash" and "men are trash" is racist and sexist, regardless of context, because the concept of "context" is incompatible with massive, timeless generalizations like that. Context implies a specific group of people at a specific point of time. "All white men are trash" does not. It's just pure hatred. Likewise, celebrating the death of people simply because they had different political ideologies than yours is pure hatred as well. And those things scare people away from posting or even reading a forum.

Tried to see what was going on in the BFV thread here, and its straight barebones compared to how Gaf used to pop off on gaming OT's. All I heard during the implosion was "lets get back talking about games" and its just not there yet.

Damn. It's extremely similar except a smaller font (which it's always had). I gave them the benefit of the doubt (ha) when they tried and spectacularly failed to create a politics subforum right after NeoGAF did it (successfully). But this one is just too obvious. Some people over there are still, a year later, working tirelessly to try to undermine NeoGAF at every turn.

Probably has something to do with the forum software getting upgrades and whatnot.

This is basically the only reason why I prefer Era over GAF.

Then please point those posts out and report them, otherwise members here will assume you are full of malarkey. We continue to hear how this place is "full" of "alt-right/incel" BS, but when we ask for receipts - no one provides anything outside of one or two posts that were already moderated. If it is as big of an issue as you claim, you should not have any issue getting a good 15+ references made over the past week.

Given how much of a failure BFV has been, there really isn't any surprise that it is not active. Meanwhile check out the RDR2 thread which has more than enough people conversing about the title.
