Anyone here retro game exclusively or more than current gen games?

A friend of mine has been bitching to me for years about current gen titles. Even the best ones, he hated all of them, he just couldn't get into them, and would always pine for the good ol days of gaming. I used to tell him he's too hung up on nostalgia. So he modded his NES, SNES, and PS Classic editions and he's been loving it for months now. So for him it's much more than just nostalgia I guess.

I don't dislike the current gaming landscape, so I'm not in desperate need to do this, but I do plan to go through a retro gaming binge at some point.

Does anyone here game more retro than current gen and if so I'm curious of your opinions on it? Do you prefer it to modern gaming or is it just a short term nostalgia fix?

I play more vintage games than modern games. For me, it comes down to time constraints and ease of picking up and playing. I do play a lot of retro games on my Switch too. I'm not looking for my games to be a cinematic experience. I'm looking to play action packed games in short bursts.

I rarely go back to previously played games. I might play them on my phone via totally legit means and a bluetooth controller, but not enough to drop newer games to mainly game on old game systems. I prefer modern gaming without a question.

Many indies have been fixing any possible itches i have to go back.

I think the reason why retro games have grown in popularity is because modern gaming has become complicated. You no longer just pay a set price and get a working game, you basically are paying to access an ongoing beta with non stop updates. Games these days barely ship compete and there's always some nonsense day 1 patch. The exception to this seems to be Nintendo first party titles.

I still play modern games more, but absolutely adore retro gaming and it's simplicity. I'm actually kinda hooked on the merging of these two things: stuff like enhanced BC on the Xbox One X, modding classics (for the modern benefits of bluetooth controllers, loading games from SD cards) and even basic stuff they provide like the ability to play on modern TVs.

My biggest guilty retro pleasure is definitely RetroAchievements - loading up retro games in an emulator and getting to unlock community-built achievements is amazing to me. I've gone back and played a lot of the games I loved as a kid (nostalgia) and even played through several games I skipped out on at the time (pure fun) as a result. In fact, I'm getting ready to start Legend of Dragoon (which I never played when it came out, as I was in college at the time and didn't have a lot of time to game) which I hear is pretty good.

Myself, I love the 2d arcade and pixel art style, in fact lately I only play retro games on Switch and only in physical format. In digital I don't buy anything. I give you some examples of my last purchases:

Horizon Chase Turbo
Ultracore
Blazing Chrome
Capcom Belt Action Collection
Tiny DX the barbarían
Streets of Rage 4

My next physical purchases:
Castlevania Collection
The Take Over
Gunlord X
Súper Blood Hockey
The mummy demastered
Bloodstained curse of the moon 2
Shantae

My friend just beat Live a Live the other day and said it's without question better than any RPG of the last 3 generations. Obviously just his opinion. That and Bahamut Lagoon were always games I never played but wanted to.

Your friend has great taste in games. Don't know if I'd personally agree with his "better than the last three generations" statement since that includes the PS2 which had some bangers.

Legend of Dragoon was very good, it has a FF feel, but I think PS1 titles aged the worst out of all the gens, because of how choppy the graphics are. The battle system I don't think ages well, but everything else probably will.

I have a friend who does.
His favorite platforms are: DS/SNES/OGXbox/Amiga/C64.
He never plays anything outside of those platforms.

It's easier than ever to play retro stuff so why not? I don't limit myself to books or movies made within the past 10 years. Just because videogame companies try to bury the past doesn't mean I need to.

My "desert island" console* used to be the SNES. I've actually found in the last few years that's now the Switch, but mostly because it can also play SNES games and do so portably. Also, the Switch has a lot of really great retro-inspired games (Stardew Valley, Curse of the Moon, Shovel Knight, The Messenger, Mega Man 11, Monster Boy, Octopath...)

Anyone who dismisses retro games just because they are old, isn't doing themselves any favors.

* desert island console = If I were stuck on a desert island, and could only bring one game console, which would it be?

Recently finished super Metroid and symphony of the night for the first time in my life. I was too dumb as a kid to enjoy these metroidvania style games.

Playing some of these old games really show you how utter shitty some modern AAA walking simulators have become.

I tried to enjoy days gone before these two games and boy, that game sucks! in comparison.

Might start a 16 bit RPG (thinking about lufia or phantasy star 4) soon, when the days start to get colder. No need to always buy the newest games, there is an ocean full of awesome games yet to be discovered.

Me! But only because I sold both my Turing GPUs in preparation for Ampere and my backup GPU is only good enough for low demand classic games from ages ago :messenger_grinning_smiling:

I go back and forth. PS1 and original Xbox are my main jams as far as retro shit is concerned. I'm a huge fan of PS2 and 360 as well.

Of course on PC, it's not uncommon that I'll be playing something older than dirt also. Depends on the game. RPGs tend to age better than most other genres.

Playing Red Dead 2 mostly now - so that's kinda hard to top. It's all gravy to me.

I have a TG-16, Saturn, and DC hooked up sitting on the floor next to me as I type this. There's a PS4 as well but I only really use it for VR. Retro all the way for me, forever!

No, but I do for periods of time. Recently hooked the GameCube up to play Thousand Year Door and started looking at hooking up a bunch of old consoles. Ended up playing through Final Fantasy 1-5, before stating on TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima.

VR is another point I usually make when trying to describe "modern retro". Stuff like this

Is crazy. And the Genesis collection got a VR mode as well.

I recently played Streets of Rage 4 and got in the mood for some retro stuff. Currently, I'm floating between Actraiser and SimCity for the SNES.
I'll finish Actraiser tonight, on the final boss rush stage, and am thinking about starting Final Fantasy VII on Xbox GamePass.

Starcraft came out in 1998 and I'm still watching all the latest tournaments based around it.

I don't believe old games have an expiration date. When a developer makes something with the full intention of being fun, it remains that way forever.

Sadly, can't say that about some modern games that are just designed to collect money until someone pulls the plug on their servers.

I didn't count the hours but I probably play more past generation games than current ones.

It is not nostalgia. I like many gameplay mechanics and art styles which, for a reason or another, disappeared. People who doesn't play classics would be surprised by how many great ideas were tossed away for inferior ones.

I like to experience a different zeitgeist also. How cool would be if the anime games of today had a 80/90s manga art style? I'm interested in Scarlet Nexus, seems a really cool game, but what if it had an Akira or Appleseed like art instead of modern anime? I would be hyped as fuck. For these, I play old games.

I like how Contra has an 80s Action Hero influence, mainly Aliens and Castlevania has a Horror movie + 80s anime theme. Hard to see these types of influence these days.

Yes I play old games more and new games these days. Love my Xbox One X. In addition to all the retro compilations I have all those XB and 360 games.

Well I'm debating between starting Legend of Dragoon, or Front Mission 5. I'll probably play both.

Meanwhile the biggest game I'm looking forward to personally is tomorrow's launch of Rogue Legacy 2

I'm also planning on buying a Series X almost completely because of backwards compatibility with previous generations.

I game mainly retro, indies and AA's. Like your friend i also hate the majority of AAA releases (although not all of them).

I seriously suggest introducing him to indie and AA games, there's stuff there he might end up liking.

Man, I *LOVE* retro games, I'd say that 90% of my gaming nowadays is with some retro console.

I just finished Mario Sunshine, after that I beat super ghouls n ghosts on cps1 and sega genesis, today I started lunar silver star story complete....after that, I'll play ace combat 3 with the english translation and then....I don't know, the sky is the limit!

And to piggyback off this, I would've bought the PS5 near/at launch if it let me play my PS2 and PS3 collections (and the few PS1 games I own).
I bought a PS4 pretty close to launch. At the time, there were a lot of rumors that they were bringing PS1 and PS2 "Classics" from PSN (PS3 + vita purchases) so that they would be playable on the PS4. I was really excited, I have something like 80 PS1 Classics I own on PSN. A lot of new PS1 games even released on the platform after the PS4 came out even. It never materialized, and I'm still pissed about it.

You'd think with all of Microsoft's talk about backwards compatibility giving their console the advantage, Sony would at least attempt an effort here. I mean, I just want to play Mega Man Legends 2 on my PS5 - I don't need it to be upscaled, I don't need trophy support, I just would like to play the game I bought without having to dig up a console that's getting ready to be two generations old. Yup, still pissed.

I haven't intentionally tried to play older games, but I haven't been drawn to many new games in the past few years. I'm doing the 52 games in 2020 challenge this year and there's only a few new games in there (out of 45 so far).

To me it comes down to a fun gameplay loop without fluff. Games these days have fluff for days, so in turn I'm not really playing them.

I did. I put him onto Hollow Knight and Axiom Verge and he called them "ok, but nothing special" and when I asked what he didn't like about them he just said he wasn't all that impressed. He liked Shovel Knight a lot, that's one he liked.

how is the physical of that? I wanted to purchase but it missed the convertible dlc if I remember correctly and I was sad given tHe outrun inspiration.

I swing between retro and modern.

It's kind of a mood thing.
I tend to skip systems and generations. Like beat a 350/PS3 game then play something 16bit. The earlier generations have so many 2d platformers that I don't want to get sick of any console.

Did you suggest bloodstained curse of the moon? I really resonated with that.

Yeah, he was interested in that one a lot.

Been on a retro kick lately.

Just got done playing through Super Metroid and We ❤ Katamari. Also Beautiful Katamari on 360 but that's not really retro.

Played a little Rampage, Karnov, and Life Force on the NES and then fired up my Nintendo 64 today. I only own like 14 games for the Nintendo 64 and I don't have much desire to buy more. I'm sorry but I just never liked that system very much. Had some good memories with Goldeneye, Star Fox, Zelda, and Mario 64 but that's it. Terrible controller, bad graphics that didn't age well, expensive games, and a terrible selection compared to the PS1. Gamecube was a masterpiece by comparison and I might even like the Wii better despite not caring for that system much either.

Edit: hell I forgot I just rebought a GBA SP and have been playing Super Mario Advance, F-Zero:MV, Castlevania CotM (what a terrible Castlevania game), and Mario and Luigi.

I used to be largely a current generation gamer - but the current PS4/XBOne generation really doesn't seem to be doing it for me. I've been playing a lot of PS2 stuff recently...
