Why would I make the jump "from" one of the PC headsets to PSVR?

If I already own one of those headsets, and if I have enjoyed VR enough on it to still want the tech on my PS4, why wouldn't I also keep the PC headset?

I mean, I guess if the only way to afford PSVR is to sell the other headset, but that still seems really premature.

Welcome to Gaf, where everything is amazing, but only until it's out. Then it's a disappointment in regards to wild expectations that were usually only based on imagination.

I could see WHY someone would do that:

-Disappointed with the output of Vive software
-Thinking PSVR being lower priced means more adoption and more support
-Seeing big franchises and developers supporting makes you think the games will be better (ie. more AAA-like experiences)

Personally, I could see PSVR games being even more pricey for what you get. While there may be a little less junk to shovel through and a little more quality from recognizable IPs, this early period will mainly be filled with similar caliber of content at a price that is probably more than you'd pay if it was just a 2D game.

It may give you a bit more money to spend by going with the cheaper headset, but I wouldn't assume it is going to be the better experience, especially when you have something like Drive Club which sounds good but is also the type of experience that is going to be hampered by the lower resolution when you are going to be spending 99% of the game staring into the pixelated distance or motion control stuff that doesn't feel much beyond the motion control games we already had several years ago or traditional games have a controller and will either have a good chance of making some people feel motion sick or are watered down to the point where all the teleporting and "comfort mode" control make it a different experience.

We'll see. I can only think the expectations of "I want to finally play Call of Duty and Skyrim in VR." could be disappointing for people if and when it doesn't pan out that every game doesn't have a VR mode, but it could be fun if there is more good support for games like that in the future. The reality is that even if there is, it will come with compromises.

Nope. Ill hold on to my rift. Besides, vr is not really condusive to gaming outside of specific scenarios.Personally,I only use it to enjoy videos and virtual desktop.

People will get over vr for gaming like they got over the idea of motion controls. It's just a matter of getting over that honeymoon phase.

I'm not making a jump but I'm going with PSVR over vive. Even though my PC is way more powerful than my PS4, I feel like the content for the vive doesn't have as much direction as the PS launch stuff. I watch all of giant bombs vrodeos and there have only been like 2 games that I actually thought looked cool. With PSVR there's more than 10 games just out of the day one line up that I want to play.

Might already be aware, but if the non-room scale Vive games (many of which are on Oculus as well) looks interesting enough then you don't need a full room for the Vive. You can plug in only one base station which would take up the same amount of space as PSVR or Oculus.

So much negativity, so I'll reiterate why I've made the switch, as nobody seems to get it:

I got a Vive at launch & loved the thing. I really enjoyed my time with a few of the games that have been released for it - Audioshield, Raw Data, Budget Cuts demo, Fantastic Contraption & Vanishing Realms.

But the problems - there's not much on the way that I'm interested in for Vive & to be honest, I don't really have the space in my house to make the most out of room scale.

I sold my Vive which easily funds PSVR, motion controllers plus a bunch of games to get going with it.

Now I can play the dozen or so games I know are coming out for PSVR within the first couple of months. Games which either aren't coming to Vive (RIGS, Until Dawn, Stardust), or won't be coming to Vive for a good long while (Resident Evil 7, Rez?)



Also, to be honest I find the PSVR more comfortable on my head (though to be fair, from short sessions at EGX this year and last) and screen quality to be better on the PSVR, even if the graphics aren't going to be as impressive.

And it's not like I can't jump back on the PCVR train in a couple of years when there's a bunch of content for me to be excited about again.

Curated VR content on PSN is a mess right now. The line up is pretty solid and huge, but you actually have to fish around yourself though. Sucks

The problem with indies is scope. Those games usually rely on a good gameplay gimmick and that's that. Rinse and repeat until boredom, which like mobile games, sinks in pretty fast.

You may have indies and AAA games mixed up here....

I never understood this.

the vive only requires this for roomscale experiences. It too does seated experiences and standing experiences, just like PSVR... well, only better.

Eh. I have about the same problem. Really wanted a Vive, but honestly, I just don't quite have the room to take advantage of it. PSVR can do sitting and standing games, as well, so the main advantage of room scale is gone for me. I did also recently upgrade to a 1070 for VR, but since that will future proof me on PC games for awhile, it seems like a worthy investment anyway.

The library of release games seems fine. They are numerous (somehwere between 25-30 on launch day, IIRC... some have been added very recently to the list) even if they won't all have a broad appeal.

I fully expect PC VR devs to port many of the popular titles to PSVR in some form another. Job Simulator is already coming along with The Assembly. Raw Data is supposed to be in the works. I'd love to see Tiltbrush and SPT make it over and I'm almost certain the latter will (Tiltbrush is still exclusive to Vive "for now"). And hell, though I doubt it well ever happen, if Valve ported over The Lab, it certainly wouldn't be the first of their games to pop up on a Sony platform.

Some of this is obviously wishful thinking, but sales are sales. If PSVR can even sell 3, 4, 500k units, it would be pretty difficult for devs to leave that money on the table even at the expense of full roomscale experiences.

It all depends on your criteria. PSVR takes the freshly paved road just outside the city. Vive takes the path through the jungle with a machete.

Vive represents a paradigm shift, and with that comes starting from scratch with rusty game ideas. PSVR is pretty focused on enhancing what's already been built to date.

Vive can do everything PSVR can, it's just a matter of bringing the price down so it's affordable to more than just the hardcore VR enthusiasts. My hope is that as the audience for Vive grows, plenty of developers continue to chop away and don't just revert to traditional games + stereo headtracking.

It support standing and sitting play area too.

AC7 was supposed to be exclusive to PS4 unless that changed. Resident Evil 7 not being exclusive on VR after the first year doesn't mean that it'll get it anywhere else necessarily either. Until that's announced, I wouldn't expect it elsewhere.

Rigs is not indie or indie-like.

Farpoint has a lot of money put into and is being pushed heavily by Sony.

Rez and Golem are by small studios, but by industry vets.

Battlezone isn't a Ps VR exclusive either, and you should go youtube some golem gameplay video...its shit so far. And lets not pretend veterans like Squanchtendo (new studio) are not making titles on PC Vr too

Dirt Rally on the Rift is great. I've only briefly touched Project Cars but it looks solid on the Rift.

With the Touch getting a release date tomorrow at Oculus Connect 3, they'll have Super Hot VR, Serious Sam VR, The Unspoken, Wilson's Heart and I Expect You To Die all coming as Touch games, all of which look really good.

I dont really think its time for VR exclusivity, its not good for the VR scene and exclusivity shouldnt be promoted.

I have a Vive, i was interested in PS VR but it's just not quite at the technical level i want from a device like this. Room scale is easily the best thing about VR and i see some issues popping up with occlusion when it comes to PS VR. Not to mention games come through thick and fast on Steam with Onward already being my pick for the best VR game available, i can see games drying up fast on the PS if Sony stop investing in it.

You're right, they're valid. This whole thing started with me slightly empathizing with jaxapollo in spite of some of the silly stuff in his post, and I've conflated his rough argument with my own and made this thread needlessly messy, so I'll try to rephrase:

I'm assuming that jaxapollo isn't aware of the seated games playable on SteamVR, as a lot of people that don't follow VR very closely are only aware of the Vive through brief clips of key roomscale games like Budget Cuts. I can see why someone with limited exposure to the library (don't get me started on the seldom-discussed Oculus games playable via Revive) would get the impression that it doesn't have many games with high production values compared to the PSVR launch lineup.

As a Vive owner who loves the thing yet is also starved of roomscale games with high production values, I understand the want for that. I understand where he's coming from and am excited to play the PSVR launch games, even though I'm finding plenty to enjoy on all sides of VR (low-budget, relatively higher-budget, seated, roomscale).

I feel like developers are already going to avoid roomscale a bit because of Oculus.

Hopefully all three do well enough over the next couple of years to be considered successes & Sony/Oculus look towards room scale for their next major iterations

That's the thing - "pretty closely" doesn't cut it in VR. If your hand is steady, yet your virtual hand is slightly shaking, it pulls you out. If your virtual movement lags behind your real movement, it pulls you out. Simply put, the level where things can get annoying in VR wont be conveyed by a video like that.

Actions like gun reloading are completely tangential to the performance of the Move in VR. If it couldn't do something that basic, it'd be useless.

Well most previews have been pretty positive so, not hearing anything like any major lag or being pulled out of the experience. Batman VR is supposed to be great and really immersive, that uses the Moves and not heard any reports about it not working correctly.

Going by the Batman video that went up briefly last night, I can't say I was incredibly impressed by the tracking. Also some obvious frame drops at times. Like I said, not enough data points to make any absolute conclusions. That said, the Vive controllers are hardly perfect despite being much more modern. The Move controllers will have faults. It's just a matter of how many and how bad.

I am a big Vive fanboy but the supposed ease of use for the PSVR is tempting. That reminds that I really need to sell my DK2 before it's price drops. For some reason they are still fetching a good price.
