Anyone try overnight oats? Or... oat prepping?

Do you guys cook the oats first? It seems weird to have raw oats soaking with milk overnight expecting it to be edible by the morning

I did this for a few months but it got boring. I'd use almond milk and quick oats then add berries in the morning. Currently I just cook the oats on the stovetop with almond milk and in a separate pot put frozen berries and water until it simmers, it makes a nice fruit sauce for the oats. My favourite cooking method for oatmeal is oatmeal baked in the oven but it takes the longest to cook.

I tried overnight oats and they didn't taste good unless I dumped a lot of spices and sugar in it.

Now I just blend a serving of rolled oats into my protein shake with spinach and PB2.

Chocolate peanut butter was pretty good. Will experiment a bit.

The most surprising thing is how filling this stuff is. I had breakfast at 9 in the morning and I was still full 5-6 hours after. That never happens to me.

I'm sorry, maybe I just don't understand the concept (probably). This sounds very unappetizing. So you're leaving uncooked oats in a jar/bowl of milk overnight? The oats then soak up the milk and have the texture of cooked oatmeal? But are...cold. What is the benefit to doing this?
They definitely have more of the texture of uncooked oatmeal. I was really excited when I tried this, but it was at best unnapetizing for me and at worst inedible.

Recipe that sold me was

http://www.theroastedroot.net/vanilla-chai-overnight-oats/

Coconut milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger and a bunch of oats

You can eat it cold, but honestly tastes better heated up for a minute or so in the microwave. Oats don't taste uncooked due to the overnight soaking and it tastes great

Cold does have a thickness to it that I could get used to, but after I warmed it up a bit I couldn't go back. Still much faster than actually cooking the oats

Tried with steel cut oats. 1 part oats to 2 parts fluid. No sort of congealing happened at all, so this morning I was stuck with milk with soggy, chewy oats. Rolled oats turned out much better. Any idea what happened?

I might try a recipe I found where you fry the oats in butter, add liquid, bring it to a boil, turn off the stove and leave it overnight...

Okay, I am about to try my overnight oats. I prepared them yesterday. I put about two cups of old fashioned oats, with three spoons of peanut butter, two spoons of chia seeds, half a cup of greek yogurt, and some cinammon powder stuff I got.

I hope it tastes good. Oh yeah, and I used almond milk. About three cups.

This is 100x harder than stock oatmeal...

It is really good!

It tastes somewhat plain, but with some tweaks it can taste much better. I am thinking of getting some vanilla extract to add, along with a banana and use a different peanut butter.

For some reason the peanut butter I got is saltier and drier than other peanut butters I have tried (now supposedly this one is organic).

Eaten halfway through my jar, and I am already satisfied. It's a strange feeling of satisfaction since I have always so unwisely skipped breakfast.

I put yogurt, peanut butter, chia seeds, and almond milk with the oats but didn't measure and now i have about a pound of grey slop but it tastes ok

Tried some different portions. Definetly not of fan of all rolled oats. A little too chewy.
I like half and half or even 2/3 steel cut oats.

Yeah, steel cut oats should be brought to a boil before letting them cool overnight. They won't work as well as rolled oats otherwise. If you plan on using steel cut oats, I recommend making a giant batch that will last you a week, and then reheat what you want in the morning with whatever additions you would like (fruit, honey, sugar, spices, milk, cream, yogurt, etc.)

What are some good bland recipes for this? I don't like soupy oatmeal at all. I like it pretty dry, moist, but dry oatmeal. PB or Bananas do not interest me at all. I generally throw in some honey or brown sugar into my oatmeal along with some cinnamon and if I have any around some diced apples. Strawberries or raspberries might be cool, maybe even blueberries. But I'm pretty simple in what I eat with it.

I made it last night and it wasn't soupy. The oats were still pretty solid.

If it requires reheating in the morning, it stops being useful to me.

The thing I love most about this is the fact that I grab my big shaker out of the fridge and it's a instant nutritious breakfast that'll keep me full for a long time. I'm not going to be futzing around with pans or boiling water at six in the morning.

Alright I gave this a shot tonight, we'll see how it turns out tomorrow. I didn't really measure anything... kinda just went for it.

Quaker steel cut oats
Dannon vanilla yogurt
whole milk
Hershey's cocoa powder
Peanut Butter & Co. white chocolate peanut butter
vanilla extract

Its either going to be the best tasting thing ever or garbage mush. It looked like ass in the container after I actually mixed it.

My second attempt turned out better than the original. Adding in the chopped dates, raisins, and blueberries added sweetness to it. My "extra thick rolled oats" don't soak up too much milk though, so it is closer to simple oats and dried fruit in vanilla milk than what I might view as oatmeal. I'll have to try with different oatmeal.

Made 2 bowls of this tonight to try tomorrow. If it ends up being good i'll share what i added to them. But they look promising!

Did a cocoa and peanut butter one last night. It tastes too much like a delicious pudding for me to truly believe it's nutritious :P

ate these for a couple weeks last year before stopping for whatever reason

never went very complicated with it though just oats/milk/chia seeds/maple syrup/fruit

easy to make and you can make them for multiple days at a time

Made some yesterday and had it this morning.

It was alright. Maybe I kinda had the wrong expectation going in. Since it looks almost like a smoothie in the pictures I kind of was expecting something like that. Bit sweeter and something a bit thinner/watery.

I did 1/3 cup oats, 1/3 greek yoghurt, 1/3 almond milk, chia seeds, two tablespoons of peanut butter, mixture of different kind of fruits.

Probably will try it again and put in a bunch more almond milk in it, to try to get it a bit thinner next time. And maybe a bit more fruit and a bit less peanut butter. Any further tips?

Edit: It's fucking great energy wise though. Had it this morning, worked out, and now a couple of hours later I still don't feel the need to eat something.

Play with the ratios, and don't forget that chia seeds absorb liquid and turn jelly-like. You can try reducing oats and putting more chia.

And I hope everyone knows you can toss some oats into a blender to make creamy smoothies/shakes? No cooking, overnighting, or anything needed.

Question how long does this stay good?
Can I make like 3 of them on Sunday and spread them over the week?
Or does it go to crap after a day or something?

Yea this looks delicious - subbed.

However, the nutrient macros in these might not be the best if trying to cut weight for the summer. Mostly fat/carbs and little protein.

Will give it a shot but doubt I'll be replacing my protein shake/flaxseed combo breakfast.

Yeah, that all depends on what you put inside the thing.

All I plan on using is Greek Yogurt, a banana, dried cranberries and chia seeds.

If I get my hands on some, I'll throw some whey in it for a extra protein boost after workout.

I tried throwing in a half scoop of unflavored/plain whey protein powder recently, it went in just fine. An easy +10g of protein to the entire thing.

Yo - need a low carb version. Am shredding.

Well low carb is hard to achieve. My protein rich mix is 70% rolled oats with fiber,20% soy protein powder and 10% cocoa powder.
for 100 grams it is:
29.3 grams of Protein
7.6 grams of Fat
37.8 grams of Carbs
361 calories

In other news. Too much salt today. Ugh not tasty. Not uneatable though.

Bought everything, will try tonight. Then I looked st the Quaker Oats container. They had recipes for exactly this on there. I guess they're embracing it.

made some with peanut butter, yogurt, rolled oats, and bananas. it's solid AF, i was expect something more soupy.
It depends on what you put in it and how you distribute the ingredients.

I'm going to try adding some black coffee to mine soon.

I mix mine up and don't bother putting things in specific spots.

I've switched the whole milk for coconut milk, which seems to make the oatmeal more congealed overnight. I may just be using too much liquid though. The grocery store sells chia seeds, but it is $12 per bag; compared to flax seed at $4 per bag, that seems a bit high in price.

I forgot my oat jar at work so I had to scale down.

This batch:
Greek Yogurt
Banana
Whole Milk
Honey
Cranberries
Instant Oatmeal.

My container was too small to fit peanut butter. We'll see how this tastes in the morning.

Lots of good protein in there. I'm probably going to make my own almond butter for it.

I forgot to follow up on this.

Had them the day after and they were really awesome. Personally i dislike porridge, but i really liked this one. Thanks for the thread and all the different recipes. It did encourage me to try it, and i found an easy breakfast to prep here and there. I'll start trying some of the recipes from here. :D

I've been making this combination for a few days. It tastes a bit like apple strudel ;)

50g rolled oats
100ml milk
1/2 tsp sugar with vanilla
75g greek yogurt
1/2 chopped apple
75g apple puree

My wife loves it. She demands it every morning.

I go for the layered approach, btw. I don't even really mix it up before I eat, as I like having the different textures.

What is a good oats to milk ratio? The recipe I followed said 1/2 cup of oats to 1 cup of milk, which I thought was too much milk.
