Apartments: First or second floor?

GAF, I'm looking to move into a(nother) 2-floor apartment building. I've lived on the first floor in two complexes and I'm kind of tired of hearing my upstairs neighbors walking around and dropping things. Also, at my current place, the air conditioning from the unit upstairs has leaked (and been "fixed") at least 5 separate times over the last year.

Does anyone strongly prefer living on the first floor? Has anyone had bad experiences with living on the top floor? The place I'm looking at has both floors priced the same, so that's not a concern.

First floor's always best (if you have decent upstairs neighbors).

You don't have to go up/downstairs for groceries and stuff! And moving out is 100000x easier!

Top floor is great because you don't have any annoying people above you. But it also sucks because you can inadvertently be the annoying guy upstairs walking around or dropping something. It also sucks when moving or bringing home stuff since it is a longer haul.

Bottom floor is great because you don't have to worry about annoying anyone below you and it is easier to move in or bring groceries since there are no stairs. But it also sucks because of upstairs neighbors sometimes.

I personally prefer ground floor but my wife prefers top floor.

You're also less likely to have your place broken into on the top floor. Criminals don't want to be lugging your wares downstairs.

Top floor - not only is there less noise, but better protection from burglars and stuff too (though my apartment on the second floor was nearly broken into - luckily I was home that day).

Only thing that sucks is having to carry heavy shit like air conditioners up/down the stairs. That's a huge pain in the ass but it's only an occasional thing.

Top floor.

Better views.
Less noise.
Less bugs.
More security.
All the cool people live upstairs and will be your neighbors.

Only drawback is the possibility of a fire and getting stuck. But if you are only on the 2nd floor you could just jump.

This. I lived on the bottom floor and got broken into through the window. Much less chance of that on a higher floor.

Like everyone else, top floor. I'm currently third floor in a four floor condo complex. Apartment above me is empty, neighbor to the right was just foreclosed, and to the left is a stairwell. Heaven.

You will hear sex if you're under another unit. You will hear them wake up in the morning if you're still in bed. You might hear them play videogames. If that bothers you at all, don't let it happen. For a two floor building I'm doubting you have elevators, but stairs are not that bad.

Plus it's reassuring to know that your upstairs neighbour's faeces isn't flowing past you inches away from where you're brushing your teeth.

I'd only go with the first floor if you're on the backside of the building where you have a sliding glass door/deck.

If you're on the front side there's no advantage/reason to being on the 1st floor unless you're too lazy to move your furniture up some stairs.

2nd floor, obviously. I am now living on a 4th floor of 6th floors apartment complex. It's the best thing. Less noise, less insects trying to get into your place, less wandering eyes, better views, security (although this goes for every floor since my apartment has double the security and only people who live in particular floor can use the lift to get to that floor), etc.

Top floor is definitely the best unless you're in a particularly hot location. Just try to be considerate.

Oh and no subwoofer for you :P

Top floor is less accessible to criminals.

Humans can jump a few feet and they're fine. It's not like he is diving off the Empire state building...

Personally, I am loving my Second Floor, since my Dorm goes up 7 floors. Having to lug Groceries up a single floor is more then enough in my book.

Bottom floor. No climbing up stairs when moving and I don't feel like I have to walk around like a fucking mouse. Plus, you get to jump around and exercise and shit. Although, I say that living on a second floor. :P

If you are worried about break-ins, change neighborhoods.

I would go first floor, top floor get hot in the summer as the roof cooks all day. Second floor you hear the upstairs people and you can't be too loud as you'll bother the lower floor folks.

Ground floor, you can be as noisy as you want (in terms of jumping up and down, etc) and it stays cool.

You guys on the top floor not worrying about robberies don't know much about ninjas.

Also, less chance of insects/etc the higher up you are.. I think.

Top. Peace & quiet, less likely to have a break in as well. Break ins happen anywhere for the naive. Less bugs/spiders/snakes/scorpions than being right on the ground.

I've always lived on a top floor. it feels like you own the building in a way, lol. HOWEVER, my neighbor got robbed three times so i'm not sure it's always a deterrent.

Top floor all the way. Moving can suck though.

Lifesaver.

I've lived in both and it is a myth that you get less bugs on the second floor. You get less bugs if you have clean neighbors, or neighbors that have no pets. When people with pets moved out the bug population always dropped a ton.

Top floor sucked for me because I had loud neighbors living under me and sometimes I wanted to workout in the aparment but couldn't. Plus more top apartments were broken into in my complex. It had to do with the way the stairs were facing and no one really paid attention to people going up and down the stairs.

First floor sucked for having loud people living above me,but it is a lot easier to move in and out. There is more foot traffic walking by your door ,which can be very annoying. Also less privacy if you want your windows open.

1st floor easier for break ins and you have to listen to people walking on your ceiling.

Top floor the best, except you need to wait longer for the elevator and if there is any big air conditioning equipment on the roof the low hum of it will piss you off.

I've lived on ground, 19th, 16th and 13th floors. the higher the better.
