Apple CEO Tim Cook spotted at video game designer Valve's headquarters

What if the AppleTV is actually an all-in-one entertainment box...videogames included?

Seems like a safe bet; a smart tv with voice navigation alone isn't really that compelling. Something that leverages the breadth of Apple's ecosystem, with full integration with iOS devices, though? That would be fantastic.

Another powerful competitor in the gaming space. Sounds good to me. I am sure Sony would not be happy considering they just announced gaming as 1/3 of their future.

people...

Steam is already in Mac devices.

A CEO vising might be big but jumping to the conclusion that there's going to be a new console is pushing it a bit. It can be something just related to the already existing Steam Mac support.

Ugh... Apple's ecosystem is biggest reason I pass on most Apple products when there is an alternative.

This makes so much sense. Valve are renowned for their love of closed systems.

nice.

Lets think about Apple buying Steam.

No reason to at all.

Your probably right.... Whataburger wouldn't let him use the bathroom without making a purchase and he really had to piss. He knew Valve across the street wouldn't mind. Plus, the executive bathroom at Valve has the flush of a jet engine!

He was just "spotted", people act like if he was there in a big meeting for several hours.

I'm sorry, you think the CEO of Apple would just kinda...drop in on Valve's CEO at Valve's HQ? Bring some Krspy Kreme's and say, "Wassap Gaben?!!? I was just dropping these off because you look like the kinda guy who'd like them! >:-)"

I'd be different if he ran into him in line at McDonald's or something...but that's not what happened here.

I might not be dreaming big enough, but 3D Games on Mac are broken.
There's about a 50% performance difference between running a game on OS X vs Win7 on the same machine.

I hope they discussed that as well.

They'd be better off taking that up with nVidia/ AMD/ whoever does their video cards these days.

Maybe Apple is finally going to get serious with PC gaming, and the NEW CEO of apple want's to change the image of apple systems as "Work" Only. So what better way than to sit down and discuss what the largest distributions services for PC games thinks apple needs to do from a OS level and tools design to make that happen.

To show that the new Apple gives a shit about games.

It would certainly show that. Still seems unlikely, since that message can be sent by many other people (executives, team leaders) and in many other ways (skype, phone call, e-mail). CEO's usually meet in person to discuss *the future*.

Oh shit.
I thought he was just kidding. i guess he was serious.

Rumored over 3 billion.

We don't know for sure though since Valve is a private company. I don't think a buyout or merger is likely, though. Valve has no reason to do so.

yea, a buy out is not in the cards for a million different reasons. There's no reason for it. That said, a higher level collaboration...that's very possible. If Valve really wants to come out with a set-top box...and if we know Apple has been trying to get a viable set-top box into the market for some time now...why not work together on one? Apple's brand name power and Valve's gaming strength could be a good match for a new set-top box.

Isnt Gabe the same guy that bitches that Xbox Live is too closed a system, and now we think that hes gonna join Apple in their somehow less-closed system? Wheres the confusion icon.

Apple and Valve announcement Dec. 21st, 2012.

I think they could do something interesting together, honestly.

Doesn't Apple use mobility cards in its iMacs, or am I misinterpreting the 'M'?

they use AMD laptop cards and laptop mobos. All all-in-one computers use a laptop mobo and either integrated graphics or a laptop discrete gpu.

as an example: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...29_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/desktops/TouchSmart_PCs

An AppleTV has a GPU? Color me confused.

I believe it uses the same SoC that the iPad 2 uses. (?) That has a GPU, yes.

Certainly would be a hell of a gesture. Maybe to gain advice on how best to get publishers and developers to support OSX day and date with PC and consoles. Very interested in any case.

This is dumbest non-story I've read in a while.

If Tim Cook was spotted going through a McDonald's drive-in, would one automatically assume Apple was about to buy the company?

If Tim Cook was spotted coming out of a dental office would one assume the Apple is about to get into a whole line of orthodontic equipment?

If Tim Cook shat himself in public would one extrapolate that Apple will open public toilets on every street corner?

Maybe if you were insane. This is like reading tea leaves and staring at inkblots and seeing things that aren't there. Get a grip!

do not waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant

Apple needs to find ways to spend infinite money. The problem is that Valve doesn't need their money because they have their own money printing machine. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE

But nobody is being excluded under this new model. More people are playing games because gaming is more accessible and has less of a stigma attached to it now. Something like the iPad offers everything from the most casual of games to wonderfully complex "hardcore" games. The problem is some people just can't deal with the idea of gaming without a d-pad and 4 face buttons. I mean, shit, look at how people derided the Wii as "waggle bullshit." Or the sheer vitriol directed at iPad gaming. But outside of the "hardcore gaming" bubble, nobody cares.

Amazing summary of my thoughts on the issue. Thanks for raising this valid, underrepresented interpretation of the current status of gaming.

Indeed. The real question is what is the end game for Steam Big Picture Mode. Valve isn't just doing this so people can hook up their PCs to their TV.
