That for me, is another reason to not purchase an iPhone when it finally launches here in Europe.

I could put MP3s as my ringtone on my phones 5 freaking years ago! And it was all FREE!!

10:07am - "Our ringtones are going to cost just $.99 in addition to the song." Psh! You have to pay a second time to use a purchased song as a ringtone!

Ah...but you weren't paying extra for those ringtones...were you?!

INNOVATION!

Double dipping for ringtones lol.

I am glad my phone plays MP3s as ringtones.

And there's already a utility out that turns any song the iPod can play (even protected songs) into ringtones for free!

grrrrr @ double dip, it was inevitable though.

Is still cheaper than what most mobile companies charge for ringtones, and you can't choose what part of the song you want to make the ring with those.

Super ultra lame rip-off right there...is that legal? They are charging you to use something you already own and paid for.

Jerks.

Give them some slack. They're charging $1 for a special 30 second version of the song that plays out of a very special kind of speaker.

Technically, you don't own anything but the right to play that music privately.

Steve’s assigning Aretha’s Respect to his wife’s contact, previewing the selected section before confirming the purchase. As a reminder, you can already make your own (unonfficial) ringtones for free with tools, and upload them to your iPhone with programs like iFuntastic (Mac) and iBrickr (Windows).

Uh oh, Gizmodo's servers about to crash as a result of Apple's wrath again. They ignored the clear warning signs.

The ringtone thing was probably throwing a bone to the record companies to stop them getting stroppy over iTunes' dominance and Jobs' refusal to budge on price.

No big deal. Only idiots buy ringtones anyway, the rest will find other ways.

10:11am - Gonna Make You Sweat by C+C? Damn Steve. "Isn't this great? Pick the exact section of the song you like, make a ringtone out of it!" Uh oh, he's playing the Beatles... Give Peace a Chance... "That's when NBC calls." Uproarious laughter.

Giggle.

what is the program that lets you turn mp3's into ringtones? I need this so my girlfriend stops paying money for shitty ass ringtones on her razor.

"Now let's talk about the iPod. It's doing really well. They're... rather strong." Teehee. "We've sold over 110m to date... and you'll notice the place where the sales curve is strongest is during the holiday season... today we're going to refresh or replace EVERY single product in this lineup to get ready for this holiday season

Correct! Double dip it may be, but it's better than the wallet rapage that the recording industry and mobile carriers would prefer.

This double dipping is shit, but don't kid yourself and think it's Apple's fault exclusively. The content providers demand it, and Apple was too shitty t put straight MP3 ringtone support in. What a crock.

DICK IN HAND IN FAP-READY POSITION!

The iPod: Sold more than 110 iPods total, and the sales are most in the holiday season. TODAY, they will replace the entire lineup, from the Shuffle to the big boy iPod.
