Hm, i never owned a Apple-product, so let me ask this:

The Ipod Classic 80GB...is it any good?

I wonder, because it has less battery life than thr 160 GB-version.
Also, is the 3" screen big enough to watch movies on it without feeling annoyed by the small size?

Touch and 160GB-version are out my financial reach, so, if any of you Apple-experts could tell me if the 80GB one is good or not, that would be nice.

Personal preference.

I was this >.< close to pulling the trigger on the (now old) video iPod 2 months back but realised that the screen was too small for me to watch any videos on my commute. So, instead I bought a PSP because of its 4.3" screen. :D Couldnt be happier. So yeah, personal preference. ;) Good luck with your purchase.

I was first turned off to the new Nano but seeing it in someones hands for some reason warmed me up to it. I'm thinking about getting the 8GB one for my mother (BIRFDAY). It'll stop her from having me burn her Music CDs too, jesus christ.

iLounge gave it a B+

Pros: A superior update to Apple’s 2005 and 2006 hard-disk based iPods, featuring cleaner audio, crisper video, better storage capacity and greater than promised battery performance at last year’s prices. Available in silver or black versions, each featuring an enhanced user interface that’s visually more interesting than its predecessor, and with better built-in games. Offers industry-leading 80GB and 160GB hard disk technologies in enclosures that are slimmer than ever before.

Cons: No longer Apple’s “best iPod ever;” outdated 2.5” screen and interface are now steps behind Apple’s best devices in ease-of-use and quality of overall media playback experience, while new interface struggles to match iPhone/iPod touch features without approaching their elegance. For photo and video output, no longer compatible with majority of video-out accessories, including portable video displays, released for the color 4G and 5G iPods, requiring new and more expensive replacement accessories; past accessories with on-iPod display features will exhibit reduced functionality, as well. Past iPod games won’t play on iPod classic.

I'm sure games will be rectified, the accessory thing is bullshit as usual from Apple. The rest of the complaints seem to be simply that it is living in the shadow of the touch. Personally I don't have a problem with that.

Walked into the Apple store here in Pittsburgh (Shadyside) yesterday morning and they had tons of the Classics, 80GB only though. Silver looks fugly as heck in person. Black's pretty darn slick.

People who actually pay for those ridiculous iPod-only LCD screens deserve all the incompatibility woes they get.

I have no idea why they went with silver instead of white as the standard. It's retarded.

TV out is b0rked completely unless you buy a new cable apparently.

That's not a bad thing. Previously they'd used just an analog camcorder cable with incorrect labeling. I'd much rather have a DAC from the bottom port feeding me a higher quality component-out than that little headphone jack could muster.

Why couldn't they have both, like they previously did? I loved keeping my mini-composite cables around in my bag and being able to watch a TV show with my girlfriend or something.

Noob question #2:

Is there an easy way to move my entire collection from local drive to external HDD and still keep the library updated correctly?

I plan on keeping all my music off my laptop now that I have an iPod, PLUS ripping all my cds is taking up too much space locally.

HELP!

I think there is a setting. Once I get an iPod I'll lose all my ripped music from my laptop to free up space.

There is a setting that will actually delete the contents of your iPod if your iTunes is empty.

Right this is how I think you would do this.

Edit -> preferences -> advanced -> Change iTunes folder location

Once you do this go to Advanced -> Consolidate library

Then when it finishes copying everything delete the local stuff.

Give it time. I'm sure a crack will arise.
In the EU, there's a fixed volume limit on the iPod (compared to USA iPods) and there's a PLETHORA of programs available to crack it.

Ah cool! That worked well. Thanks!

Man ripping all these cds is so tedious.

So the Touch doesn't hit stores until the 28th?

Yup

For those with the iPhone, what else are you storing on your system besides music? I only have about 4 gigs of music on my current 30 gig iPod and I'm wondering if I will really ever need more than 16gb of space.

I've been working with OfferCentric and I have the chance to get a free 3rd gen Nano :D I think i'll get the ice blue one.

UCHalf.com rolled out with an ipodtouch site the other day (I'm going for my 7th ipod from them, and this one I'm actually excited about!)

The new nano is pretty nice as is the touch. The touch is too pricey considering how much space you get, yes I know it's a flash drive.

I still don't get why they didn't make the touch with a large HDD, I'll wait for that. an 80/160gig touch would be orgasmic. I usually don't care about space as I don't have that many mp3's but I have a lot of videos and for that you need good storage.

Sorry, but what the hell question is that? Is it Good? Theres tons of reviews on the things, which will touch upon whatever categories are important to you. I mean.. come on.

Does anyone else find the new nano to be really ugly?

I like how it has a big screen but the thing is fat.

It is awesome - people are just 'used' to the old nano. I can guarantee you, that if they released the 'fatpod' as a first gen nano, everyone would be all over it (especially since it would be more 'iPod' proportions), and then released the long skinny one as a 3G, people would complain it's ugly and too long and narrow.

The new nano is a perfect way to get a larger screen onto it. It's just as thin, and cute to boot. Before, the old nano did feel like a music player - the new one feels like it's just a screen with controls attached, yet it plays all kinds of media. I bet you that if you get one in your hands, you'll fall in love with it.

That really sucks - but it's probably a reasonably invisible 'update' - they always remove minor features to keep costs down, or make way for new features (this iPod does progressive). How many people regularly used the iPod on their TV with the cable through the headphone socket? I did it, but more out of novelty - but then, I'm not the heaviest iPod user. I wonder if the video out works through the dock on the OLD universal dock?

But anyway, I bought a few games, I do occasionally want to be able to play with the video cable (then again, I could always just get a new one). I'm in no hurry for a new iPod - it's be nice, but more because of the 'oh, new gadget, must have' feel. I want a touch for the photo viewing and safari features, however.

Stupid question but how the hell do you get the iPod Nano out of the case? We opened it up but it's clipped in and I don't want to scratch it.

Edit:

n/m you have to lift the whole plastic thing out first and then bend it out.

So im most likely getting an IPod Touch when it comes out. I want to make sure its well protected so ive been looking up screen protectors. Since the Iphone and the Ipod Touch are so similiar ive been looking up Iphone Screen Protectors and hoping to find reviews on them.
i cant seem to find many so ive come here to ask.

Can you guys point me in the direction of some good quality screen protectors?
Also I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with Screen Protectors dulling the touch sensor (Iphone users)

Thanks :-)

I bought whatever brand they sell at the Apple store. $15 for 2 of them. Went on smooth, looks great, feels good, and hasn't altered the functionality at all. No complaints.

I love my Iphone to death, but I can say without question that Itunes is one of the most bullshit, tedious, limited peices of software I've ever used.

I've just went through all this BS of hooking up my computer(as I have a few thousand MP3s on there), updating Itunes, then upgrading to windows SP 2 only for the fucking thing to tell me that since I'm syncing up with a new library I have to erase all of the fucking shit I transfered from my roomate's computer as his is the main one we use.

WTF! So I can ONLY transfer stuff from one fucking PC!? Please tell me guys, that theres another program I can use other than this crap ass shit. And beyond that the transfering and deleting files is waaaaaaay more involved than it should have to be.

I'm not 100% (because I don't have an iPod) but Red Chair Software have apps for Creative and Apple's MP3 players. The Creative version always worked really well for me (it was the only way I could get music off the Zen) so it may be worth looking at. http://www.redchairsoftware.com/

I had to set up my girlfriend's iPod and Jesus, I hate iTunes so much. I have no idea why it can't monitor folders. My jaw hit the floor when I read that online.

I don't think you understand how to use iTunes. Just put all the music you want into your My Music folder and point iTunes to the folder. It sounds like you are making it overcomplicated.

I played around with a Nano yesterday at the Stockton location. I don't know... I think it's the coolest iPod they've ever released. It feels awesome. It's small and cute, and in real life it just looks really great. Video is VERY nice, as is the rest of the multimedia capabilities. It's better than the original Nano's.

Yep, I tried it out today and was surprised at how nice it was. I ended up getting an 8 gig for my wife and surprised her when I got home. The last iPod she had was my 3G that I gave her when I got a 4G. So this is her first iPod of her own.

Whats to understand? The message was clear. "Your Iphone is configured to a different Itunes library"

and it gave me two choices:

"erase and sync"

or

"cancel"

Sounds pretty black and white to me, but I'm not in the least bit suprised how fucking ass backwards the software is from the time I've spent with it today. I had a fucking Razr for the past two years, and with Mobile Phone tools you selected the file(s) you wanted on your phone and you clicked transfer. Its not complicated, but is just tedious and pointlessly restricting. If I take songs out of my library, put new ones in I want to transfer to the Iphone THE FUCKING SOFWARE ERASES THE SHIT I TOOK OUT OF THE LIBRARY OFF MY PHONE. Honestly, whats the point in that? And to bypass that I have to load everything to the library, and then load them again into a playlist..

why put one of those fucking nasty things on your iPod touch if all the reviews for the iPhone say it's scratch resistant?

Pure paranoia on my part. $15 for peace of mind.

You can't just hop from computer to computer and drop it all on there.

Since it's your roommate, I'm assuming you share a network. Place his network shared stuff into your computer's iTunes library and sync it all up from one place.

I didn't sign in to anything, though. I downloaded Intunes at my parents house and activated my phone with their PC. Once I got home I downloaded Itunes on my roomates comp and transferred Chevelle's Vena Sera album and a couple of Patrice O'neal clips to my Iphone as a test. I then decided to hook up my computer which has an older version of Itunes on it so obviously it doesn't read my Iphone once I plug it in I download the latest build. Then I get some jazz about needing Service Pack 2.. So after about an hour of going through MS' BS I finally have my Iphone recognized my my computer, I put a few songs in the library, hit sync and I get the aforementioned message about being configured to a different library.

Actually we don't have a router right now, we use his as the main computer because he does music and has alot of stuff he needs. But even still, that doesn't make sense, what if I get another PC? I'm actually planning on getting a Laptop within the next month or so, so is it totally pointless to transfer my files now?

you can only have your iphone sync to one library. sorry, but blame the music companies for that one.

you can always set it to manually update and it solves all your problems... at least thats the way it works on an ipod...

and there are programs that allow you to transfer music from your ipod to your computer.. im assuming they work with iphones as well..

This is actually the same crap that EVERYONE complains about when they first get an iPod. This is why I never recommend an iPod to most PC users - they tend to be under the impression that a music player should allow just dumping music files onto the device, and the device plays them. Sorry, but iPods (and I'm guessing the iPhone) needs to sync (SYNCHRONISE -get it?) to a library of music, and it just clones the all the music (or selected if you want to go that way) to the player.

The 'sync' isn't just a communication to get files - it's a pairing of that device with that computer. It may SOUND backwards and limited, but actually makes a lot of sense if you don't go around copying music. In fact, it allows for lots of great features, such as tracking number of times played, automatic uploading of podcasts and so on. A lot of people consider iTunes a waste of time, because they think it's just a tool for allowing file transfer - but it's a little more than that.

But again, many people don't understand what it's supposed to do. If you don't like the software, fine - but don't blame it for being what it is supposed to be. Backwards and limited? Hell, I think connecting a music player and having to drag music into it to be backwards and limiting. If you really have to get music from your friends computer, then you should just copy it and import into your own library.

Edit: you can actually synchronise from multiple computers - you have to set it to manual management. Of course, this is for iPod - I'm not sure about iPhone.
