Gonna buy the 16gig itouch ipod.

Should I:

Preorder from apple or wait to get it instore.

I want it the day it comes out and don't wanna preorder and be in some shipping delay/shortage fiasco and I don't wanna be standing in line when I could have had it delivered.

Which route should I take?

same here

will apple stores have it in on the 28th, or at least before i'd have received it from the online store?

Not to turn this into a Zune bitchfest thread or anything, but MS is really screwing the pooch on such a potential product. On top of that they keep pushing the "we can't share any details yet" bullshit on Zune 2 or firmware updates. Throw us a bone, you know? Give us something to wet our beeks with and give us a reason to keep this damn brick.

I'm not really saying this guy is at fault, but it is a good place to voice your frustrations:

My personal satisfaction with Zune would go up 43% if they put a clock on the thing. I think that gives some hint as to how low my demands are. All I want is a clock and the ability to edit a now playing playlist and I would be perfectly happy with the thing until 30gb becomes too small.

One of the recent iPods, it might have been the 2nd Gen. Shuffle I think, got so many pre-orders on the online store that they were very hard to find in the apple stores for a few weeks after release.

I imagine the Touch will be worse, as it's bound to have amassed loads of preorders since the announcement.

Damnit I broke down and pre-ordered a 8 GB. I was going to get the 16 GB but really, 16 GB isn't enough space either. I'll probably sell the 8 GB sometime next year when the next-gen 32 GB model gets announced.

Really mixed feelings right now.

I preordered a 16GB Touch last week, but I'm starting to have concerns about paying the same price for a gimped device. Why do I say gimped?

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/09/10/apparent-edit-to-ipod-touch-webpage/ ---> It looks like the calendar app on the Touch is read-only.

This may be a small thing, but I'm having trouble justifying the same price as an iPhone when I'm lacking camera, bluetooth, phone functions, edge availability, notes, email and now calendar entry functionality.

I just don't want to sign a 2 year contract.

Yea if they announced iPhone for Verizon I really would have no use for an iPod Touch.

Verizon will find a way to fuck up the interface and splash v-Cast crap all over the iPhone some kind of way. Watch.

As long as it still acts like an iPod, makes calls, and has Safari I don't really care.

Really? That's a deal breaker for you? Seems kind of odd, when it's really being markets as a media player first and foremost. I personally wouldn't let that be the thing that stand in the way of me getting a Touch. Then again, I have an iPhone, so what do I know.

Just ordered a silver 80GB classic. I'm excited to get a new iPod since my current one is a 4-year old 20GB with a more or less dead battery. My sister hooked me up with the 25% employee discount, too! :D

Sorry, meant silver. I wish it was white, though. My iPod mini is starting to behave oddly for the first time ever (turning itself off and on and refusing to connect to my computer sometimes. It's a sign!

I don't mind the calendar being read-only. I use my Windows Mobile phone to keep up with my calendar. If you need a phone, then get an iPhone then. I mean, the Touch is essentially just a iPod with a fancy interface. For all those things you want, an iPhone would fit your needs.

Im in pretty much the same boat. Not that i ever use my mobile camera, calender or email it is starting to feel like a bit of a gimped version. Then again, its smaller, no extortionate monthly fee (i dont use my mobile much), looks nicer.

Since it has the same software as the iPhone im holding out for the hackers to come to the rescue and add support for a load of other apps

I think it's more of the straw that broke the camel's back.

The phone isn't really something I need, but the PDA functionality is. I'm a strong believer in the whole "getting things done" philosophy and iCal was to fill a need I have of gathering inputs. Mail isn't crazy necessary, but I'd certainly take it.

The notion that Apple would remove a button just to differentiate between two product lines irks me.

For the same price, I'll lose half the space but add a slew of features (phone, camera, mail, google maps, non-gimped ical, bluetooth) while not having to worry whether I'm near a Wifi hotspot all the time.

I'm fairly certain I'm canceling my preorder and buying an 8GB iPhone.

I'm hoping to convince my employer to pay that monthly fee and replace my corporate phone.

It certainly helps that I've rewritten our internal tools to have a snazzy iPhone interface.

I do agree that it seems really odd that they took out that on small element. Doesn't really do much to differentiate the two products to begin with. I agree that it should be there.

Anybody know if the new Ipod Nano is compatible with the camera cable?

The Apple site gives mixed signals. The cable is linked as an accessory to the Nano but the description of the cable mentions that it does not function on the Nano.

If you remember during Steve's announcement, he described Safari as a way to ensure access to every wifi network. I have a feeling they toyed with the idea of leaving Safari off the touch as well, but couldn't justify it.

Sadly, we don't have the iPhone in Canada but I do agree with this train of thought. The iPod touch was tempting me since it was announced last week but as I realize how stripped it is of features that I would want to use I've decided to give it a pass.

I'm really troubled by the decision Apple made with Touch.

I think I'm just going to wait until they release a more feature filled iPod Touch or they finally release the IPhone.

Ah, one question:

I heard you cant take out the accumulator of an Ipod. Is there a way to lengthen the battery life, when you´re not at home and have a long flight or something like that?

I think it's pretty much a given that it'll be hacked and you'll be able to use any iPhone app on the iPod touch.

I would imagine going into airplane mode (disable Wifi, Cell, Bluetooth) would make a significant difference.

For all those people who are worrying because of the "gimpness" of the Touch:

Because of the nature of the Touch OS -A.K.A having the same damn version of OS X as the iPhone- it's going to be a matter of hours before you can install iPhone apps on your iPod Touch.

Trust me: as soon as the first Touch hit the streets, there's going to be a method to install apps ala iPhone... and somebody is going to come up with a method to "port" iPhone apps such as Mail or the full fledged version of the Calendar to the iPod Touch.

I mean... why do you think the iPod Touch menu has a lot of free spaces for apps? :D

I know. This is a non-issue. For people in Canada who can't get an iPhone (or could hack one but have limited phone features anyway), the iPod touch is the logical choice.

Im talking about watching videos.
5 hours of battery life, when the accumulator is brand new, that is.

I have to agree with you. That really sucks. I could justify the price of an iPod touch if I could use basic PDA functions on it, like calendar, notes, etc, because I dont have a PDA, and my phone is a piece of crap compared to that. The calendar app is awesome, and adds a ton of fucntionality to the device, IMO, thanks to the easy to read screen and great layout. It sucks that they just took out a couple lines of code disallowing this, simply because this is supposed to be an ipod.

excuse my ignorance - but what's the difference between the old iPod storage and the flash storage? Less iPod fuck ups? I've had about 3 iPods and had issues with each.

The main line of iPods (and the old minis) used hard disk drives, while the nanos, shuffles, the iPhone and now the touch use flash memory. Hard drives involve moving parts, so if an iPod or any other device with a hard disk (such as a computer or laptop) experiences shock (as in hitting a hard surface while operating), there's a possibility of the hard disk becoming inoperable and unable to mount. Flash memory has no moving parts and is much smaller in size. However, hard disks come in far larger capacities and lower prices than flash memory.

RE: calender

Man, if you're going to include an application, don't frickin' cripple it! Either include the full app or not.

I would be all over the 8 GB iPhone if not for the fact that I'm locked in with Verizon.

I just recently started hacking my iPhone and I am very, very impressed with how far the hackers have gotten with the platform. It's as simple as using one program to load an installer application onto the phone, then using that installer application to download other apps. It even lets you update and uninstall apps as well. Crazy.

I have no doubt that the Touch will be ripped apart in the same way.

Can you elaborate on what kind of apps are available?

A warning, folks...

The iPod Classic breaks compatibility with a bunch of accessories (not just video out) - it no longer works properly with the USA Spec integration kit installed in my car.

The kit I have has two modes, a "Hybrid" mode where it can get playlists off the iPod but you can still use the controls on the iPod - this mode is now broken, as the iPod locks itself into "attached to accessory" mode. If you mess with the play and menu buttons while you are docking the iPod you can glitch it into working correctly, but I only got it to work about 1/4 of the time.

I ended up switching my kit into "direct" mode where you still have control of the iPod from the iPod itself, but you can still track forward/track back from the head unit. To pick a playlist I need to use the iPod, which kinda sucks but I think I can live with it.

Beware if you have a different kit though - I hear that some kits have no alternate mode and the iPod controls (and UI!) are completely locked out, making those nearly unusable...it seems that some docking kits for audio receivers, etc. are also affected.

This is so totally what I get for being an early adopter. :(

I just realized that it's going to be fucking amazing reading through my Berserk manga on the iPod Touch, I read through them a few years ago on the PSP and it was great but it's going to be so much nicer re-reading them on the iPod.

Please... I'm trying to get used to the fact that as far as Apple is concerned, Canada is as much of a real part of their market as the Grand Duchy of Robonia.

You'd rather have nothing? The other iPods have always had a calendar, I thought.

Holy shit guys, does iTunes really suck this bad?

I can't import folders that have playlists in them without having it import the files twice?

Anyone know how to get around this? You'd think there would be an "ignore m3u when copying into library" checkbox, but no...this really fricking sucks :(

I pre-ordered the 16 GB touch in Canada. After taxes, shipping and the Canadian Markup (fitty bucks), it came out to be 125 dollars more than it would cost me if I bought it in the states, which is fucking ridiculous. I'll just pick it up the next time I am in the States.

Sure it's (artificially) crippled compared to the iPhone's calendar functionality, but it's not like you could ever create events on any of the past iPods either.

I'm sure the hackers will be glad to enable this feature though and port the rest of the missing apps too.
