Apple sets the bar high!

How many people actually read the article? Because this has nothing to do with getting notifications (iOS already has a notification center) -- its about responding to or interacting with them on the fly

Doesn't exactly make the article a whole lot better. (Meaning that's not new either)

So the same thing.
I'm not sure where you're going with this.

Which its competitors and android already had for years.

But others are going to be radical, stuff we haven’t imagined yet. Once developers begin to really harness what interactive notifications can do in iOS 8—and they will—it’s going to cause one of the most radical changes since third-party apps. With the advent of iOS 8, notifications are the new interface frontier.

I don't know if we have the technology yet, but one day we might even see things like being able to share images from camera applications. God willing, we could thumbs up and maybe thumbs down music.

I can't imagine this brave new world. Seems too far out of reach to me, buy maybe just maybe with the advent of iOS8, it'll be possible.

Not really the same and this was just from me casually watching the presentation. Unless I'm missing something, you can't respond to texts and (let's say) accept meeting invites straight from the notification on Android.

I think that's where the "newness" comes in.

Yes you can, if apps support the feature. Have been able to since jelly bean. For example can delete emails without opening the app, accept appointments etc.

What IS new is the ability to type responses in the notifications shade, although I don't get the advantage of that over a pop up anyway...

You can definitely do the bolded one.
No idea about the meeting invites since I have no friends and no one invites me to anything.

I did not say it was a new idea (and neither does the article BTW). I frankly don't know how this compares to the poorly-supported JellyBean implementation since I don't have iOS8. My point was there are numerous low-quality posts above clearly based on the notion that Apple is adding notifications or a notification center.

Including the OP: "Maybe my dad will miss less of my texts."

The thing that would change notifications is if they synced notifications across devices, so if I've already read that one mail, the notification gets deleted on the other devices. Does android do that?

I hate having to read through stuff I already know.

Yes android does that.

I think the article is hypothesizing that adding actionable notifications to iOS 8 will lead to a more widespread adoption and a new level of interaction once more devs are on board and actively experimenting with it. But it's rather poorly written and has only a throwaway nod to the current system in Android (that might not have even existed the first time I skimmed through the article) unfortunately.

The gmail app on android does that at least.

Competition on os features like this is awesome as long as neither idiotic companystarts going after the other with software patents.

Bring on more features, i am all for it.

Yup, article got edited.

Some do - it's app dependent.

For example: Timely, the awesome alarm clock that Google just purchased allows me to snooze and silence alarms from the notification bar, on a different device. So - my alarm goes off on my phone, I pull the bar down on my tablet, hit stop and the alarm stops.

Why, some guy says some shit and everyone acts like Apple is claiming to reinvent this and revolutionize that. It's grating.

Please, they get it straight from Apple.

At WWDC the smug Android bashing from Apple is hilarious... "People made a mistake when they bought an Android phone, and now they're recognizing that and switching to iPhone."

First of all, that's not even happening. But, most importantly, he says that and then goes onto announce feature after feature that has been in Android or Windows phone for years.

Apps communicating with each other!
Predictive typing!
Interactive notifications!
Lock screen information!
App battery/power information!

I'm an iPhone user / Mac owner, but the smug, misplaced elitism starts from Apple and then feeds on down to their fanboys and apple-obsessed journalists. I'm switching to Android in January because I can't stand it.

Oh gosh! Imagine a world where we can email ourselves an image using the application that we want!! Or, imagine using a phone where when hitting "share" you aren't given only Facebook, Twitter, and iMessage, but ... yknow, the thousand other applications that you might want to use for sharing.

I love that most music player apps use notifications for music controls now. Listening to music while web browsing on nexus 7 and I can just pull down the notification bar to quickly repeat, pause or skip song.

I just want to come into an Apple thread about notifications and read about Apple and notifications. Not wade through post after post of tired jokes and constant fanboy trolling. I want to do that in pretty much any tech related thread on NeoGAF.

Android does it better? Sooner? Great. I find that interesting, and I like to learn about what it did and why it's better.

But I'm pretty sure this thread was destined for shit from the start (title) so whatever.

Apple applied a narrative to the numbers, exactly as you when you ascribe smugness and misplaced elitism. It doesn't matter what they announce for the future after a switch already happened. The switchers aren't psychics, and they didn't switch for the presence or lack of those features. It's obviously unrelated.

Maybe that switch will make you happy, but it's really strange to me that you would do it based on an ascribed attitude instead of the products.

yeesh

Is marketing such an important of a part of the smartphone ownership experience to you?

That's what I meant. And it's good for me because I don't use popups. I don't know. They took a great idea and added much needed functionality. It's an excellent addition.

The author really is not explaining how Apple is doing anything different with the notification bar. He inserted a phrase saying Apple is going further than Google and leave it at that.

Not directed at me, but if marketing dictates the direction leading to this new phase of apple, where a new coat of paint suffice, I can agree with him. I also am ready to jump ship based on their last -quote- innovations. Watching them focus on hair force one was a turning point. To me, long gone are the days of being surprised by them in a good way. Perhaps that speaks more about me as an aging user with different needs than those when I bought the first imac, than about them as an ever-changing company whose customers are younger and use their products mostly for media consumption.

Of course this is just my opinion, I don't think there's need to bring up the number of past Macworld issues in my power. Speaking of Macworld, David Pogue's review of the surface pro 3 is very telling. He was Mr. Apple back in the day.

Are you a developer?

The implementation is very, very slick. I really hope this drives Google to improve android further, it needs more design consistency and I will be happy.

This thread's about this insanely hyperbolic and hilarious article, not about puncturing your precious company. Read the OP next time you have a meltdown.

Man what is it about smartphones that turns people to such childish bickering? It appears that, for some people, the fact that other people have or like a different smartphone than theirs, keeps them up at night raging.

Not exactly, I develop and publish web content. I know they're doing great stuff for iOS app developers 'tho. Credit where it's due.

Developers seem excited. Not about what they can add to their current stuff, but for the new things they can make. That's exciting to me.

Maybe that switch will make you happy, but it's really strange to me that you would do it based on an ascribed attitude instead of the products.

Particularly since it's disingenuous if one assumes the 'attitude' isn't present elsewhere.

My mother's ultra-cheap phone, which is running some old ass Android, can reply to Whatsapp messages right from the notification.
