Oops, my bad. I tried removing a jpg extension in OS X and the OS tacked it back on after a few seconds. Maybe I was thinking back to the resource fork of 7/8/9

Icons/Thumbnails could be deceiving because you could paste whatever you want there to fool the user.
Oh yeah that's true... changing the icon.

Yeah ... in "classic", you could do whatever you wanted. I miss those days! But Mac was still very solid and safe back then as long as you didn't screw with the system folder.

This is probably the biggest flaw of my argument - I'm not a programmer so I don't have an innate sense of the structural difference between the OS's. Then again, Apple isn't exactly forthcoming on the nature of the exploits they patch either.

I don't know a whole lot about the workings of OS's either, but the same would apply for windows exploits that don't allow administrator access. If a program is exploited so that arbitrary code can be executed, then that code can do anything a normal program can do. A normal program can delete files, create files, change settings, whatever.

Also, why would apple explain exactly what exploits they're fixing? It doesn't affect my use of the computer in any way to not know, and it doesn't give hackers any ideas for similar things to try.

From my experience, the extent of explanation in a windows exploit fix is "this patch fixes a vulnerability in <x> that allows attackers to compromise the system," which is really all it should be.

Anybody load up the Safari V4 Public Beta Update yesterday?

...I'm pretty sure it fixed the horrible beachball when loading up .gifs problem it had. Seems very fast.

there are ways round it, but an ordinary OS X program won't be allowed to fuck with your settings, application folders, stuff that gets loaded on boot up etc, without a box popping up prompting you to enter your password.

so even if you can make safari execute arbitrary code, it can only fuck with the files in the user who was running it's home directory, unless they combine that with another exploit to get around the security.

dunno about vista but on xp (as it was when i last used it at least) getting a program to run arbitrary code means you can do whatever you want.

I didn't word my question properly, it was more:

If i wait till snow leopard comes out to buy my refurbished macbook, will i get snow leopard or leopard?

Probably Leopard with a Snow Leopard disc until a few weeks later when they'll get Snow Leopard on everything.

You'll get Snow Leopard. Refurbs ship with the latest OS.

I also wonder if Apple could be sued over this ad? It is inferring Mac's don't crash or get virus or causes headaches.

what about the headaches of finding a compatible program

What is supposed to happen? I get 5 images, loading quickly.

i'm going to go out on a limb and suggest you arent using safari? :lol not 4 at least!

anyway i just had a brainwave on how to 'fix' this. find out in about 6 or 7 hours.

That is the one ad MS should do. Cause that is the only problem I even have as a mac user but I usually find something that is on the same level.

I liked that commercial could of been better but it was still good.

if you actually know what you're talking about and can figure out a way to get non-shitty gif performance out of Safari/ Webkit, you will be my new god.

I admit, though. my hopes are not high.

I've never had a BSOD in Windows Xp. Ever.

TAKE THAT MAC!

:lol Well the BSOD is more related to a hardware issue AFAIK and it is Windows keeping something further from happening to your system so it craps out. If you think XP is impressive, wait until you move up to Vista/7.

On my older PC trying to keep out viruses and trojans was a constant program. One time I got the trojan Vundo and despite days trying to get it out it kept coming back so I finally reformatted. I always had to keep antivirus programs going which sucks memory. No problems like that since I got my mac. OS X might be just as exploitable but in my practical experience it's just been better.

yeah by 'fix' i just mean get rid of the gifs on neogaf :lol and from the way its going so far 6 or 7 hours is a conservative estimate

In a weird way, I'm glad MS if fighting back. The prices for Macs are silly in a way. It's weird to think of MS as the underdog. It's pretty stupid. But Apple deserves some hate. Screw em.

Are Apple the biggest computer company in the world?

They might be the underdog software-wise, but they must be pretty high up in terms of consumer electronics.

Oh hey another Apple related GAF thread. I expect many fresh, new, well thought out opinions to be shared amidst a sea of deep, argumentative yet not quite disagreeable discussion.

Mission accomplished. With the thickest layer of sarcasm known to man.

ITT we learned: Macs crash more than PCs. Macs break more than PCs. Macs are a rip off (oh wait we knew that one). Macs are overpriced (wait that's redundant). Macs are only for dumb people who can't use "normal" PCs and just drool and slap a keyboard hoping for the best, and the infirm. Macs are in no way at all ever better than Windows. Period. They're only different, ever, period. Safari 4 post-update is still pretty shitty with large gifs.

One of those statements is true. Just one.

No one said any of the bolded except for you. And several of them are subjective statements and are neither true nor false.

I doubt that. Probably Dell or HP. Don't underestimate how much Best Buy sells on a regular basis at their many locations. Not saying either is the best, each have some good things but they've got to be at the top of the hardware sales of computers. As an aside, I really like the look of the new Dell Studio laptops and they've gotten great reviews so I think Dell is starting to care about the aesthetic look of their hardware more.

They've always been the prettiest PCs I think, except maybe Sony.

They were doing slick black boxes when most people were still doing those hideous massive grey things.

True, but up until the Studio laptops IMO they've been far behind Sony and Apple in their aesthetic designs. The XPS line has looked pretty nice for a few years, except for the "gamer" looks that they like to do.

The Dell desktop that I have at work is actually a pretty good design. Its an Optiplex 755 with what looks like a 2/3 size case or something. Pretty smooth for a corporate desktop and I love my 24 inch widescreen monitor here. At least I think it's a 24 inch. Too bad it has XP on it, I'd kill to have 7 on this.

What's crazy is that while Microsoft is obviously the market leader, they are acting like they aren't. Apple talks about generic "PCs" and how they believe their products to be superior. Microsoft talks about how stupid Apple is. The only result is that they reinforce Apple's own stance, and then leave themselves open for a snarky response from Apple. This has happened two or three times now. You think they would have figured it out by now.

Huh? I think you have things a little backwards here. MS isn't the company that's had a multi-year snark campaign dedicated to touting its superiority over a specific competitor's product. MS' jabs at apple have been incredibly subtle compared to the mallet over the head approach Apple has taken since OSX launched.

stuburns said:

Not even close. They are the third largest PC manufacturer in the US though. Dell and HP are first and second respectively. Worldwide, I have no idea.

Well, the iPod dominates it's product category in the US (don't know the worldwide number, but I'd imagine it's considerably less, especially in asia) with something like an 80% marketshare, but that's about it. They aren't like the big CE players of the world with huge product lines. They don't actually sell that many different products. They are very focussed.

Well, I agree. Sort of. Microsoft's ads are a lot smaller in number.

I actually liked the Apple ads when they first aired, because they were amusing, and the characters likeable. They're still likeable, but the ads are seldom clever now. And with each improvement in Windows, they're becoming a lot more disingenuous.

Crashes and headaches? Really? Still, this one was at least funny and charming. The "I'm a Megan" is both a poke at MS, but also at themselves, which I find endearing.

I thought they were semi-entertaining when I saw the first one, since they made it a campaign, every time I see one I roll my eyes at the disinformation being spouted on there and the ignorant masses out there that likely believe it. I suppose they're clever but I wish Windows and Apple would focus more on what they offer instead of why the other side sucks. The subtle and not so subtle digs are really annoying.

But yeah, I think that Apple has been on the offensive about this since the start of the campaign and MS ignored it until the "I'm a PC" campaign started and I think they've done well with that, but they still don't really address the misinformation put out there by Apple in their ads. So I'm glad they show what you can do with their software, but on the other hand I'd like for them to correct Apple when necessary.

I agree that they started off well. They were funny and clever.

I feel like they switched the writer to someone who's just *angry*. There's a malevolence to them now that wasn't there when they started.

(edit: oddly enough, that means I liked them better when I wasn't a mac user :P)

so, anyone want to list their favorite apple ads, worst ads, and the most smug apple ads (not the same thing :)

for me:

favorite: iPhone ads. shows the device, shows what you can do and how you do it. clean, simple and effective.

worst: Switch campaign. ugh. at east it gave us Ellen Feis...

most smug: Think Different. implying that your choice of computer is in any way comparable to the actions of Ghandi, Dylan, Einstein and Rosa Parks is the epitome of smug.

It was also a damn cool campaign.

Apple was pretty smug back in the days but they changed with the comeback of Steve Jobs. I think that him getting the sack was actually one of the best things to happen to Apple since it gave him a chance to view his life diffrently.
Also we got Pixar.. PIXAR!

No shit.

I'd try out macs if they were the same price as PCs, honestly. But I've had problems using a friend's. At school, most people use windows, and we often got file compatibility issues for our homework.

So, you only use macs and you have an opinion about the crashing and headaches of windows machines? That really doesn't make a lot of sense.
