Are games overpriced?

I think finding what we want matters more cause at that point, relatively speaking, the price doesn't matter.

I'm close to 100hrs in Skyrim, it turned out the game isn't for me, I'm not complaining, the game just isn't for me, this isn't what I want.

Depends when you buy them, I tend to buy great games early, but most after a price drop or two. Having a backlog helps.
 
Yes
If a game has microstransactions and Battle passes it needs to be free
If they start with season pass for additional DLC the price needs to be half of a full game

The only game where I like battle pass implementation is Fortnite because it doesn't change anything to your experience
 
I guess they are fine if people are willing to pay that price, that said, I let others pay full price I only get deals.
 
Elden Rings at U$70 ? NO

Ubisoft AC over U$ 100 ? YES

It depends, the worst thing nowadays is that most games are priced the same while some offers really good content and other are pure trash.
 
I am mostly on Steam so yes, yes games are always overpriced until I see a sale.

Reject FOMO. Embrace cheapo.

Edit: I am more likely to pay full price for a game from a smaller studio if I really like it. No more than 30 bucks though.

They are and they are going to get worse.

I tend to take a step back in my purchases and value what they actually are for my benefit.
I don't suffer FOMO. The game isn't going away and can wait until sale.
This is doubly so these days as a vast amount of games aren't even ready at release and require patches.

They are trying to rip people off.
 
Considering that nowadays we just get a long time lease, yes, they are very expensive. We no longer own our games, the publishers can take a part or the full game away, at any point.
Worst yet, we no longer ever buy access to a full game. Most often than not, games are cut to make DLCs, pre order bonus, MTX, etc.
 
70$ is about what I can take for a game. It needs to be of very high quality for me to fork out that kinda money on day 1. I usually wait for a sale or a complete package with all dlc included. I'm not gonna pay 100+ dollars for a game. I don't care if the game is blessed by the gods themselves and is the greatest thing ever made.
 
My biggest problem is that games are not finished. Buying an 80$ game and waiting for MONTHS to be hotfixed is worse than the 80$ price tag

Cost to press a disc is minimal.
 
I think they are mostly underpriced but publishers make up for it with deluxe editions, seasons passes, DLCs, and other MTXs.
 
These days, for what we are getting besides the odd elden ring. I'd say yes they are.

But there's more to this than just "game cost bad grr". The global economy is in disarray, then you have international situations, that's why steams regional pricing is beautiful, at least for us in South Africa, steam games are substantially cheaper, and that's without getting into keyresellers and so on.

To make a long story short, they are overpriced, but you could argue they always have been or they aren't priced high enough, it's the current financial situation of the globe that's causing shit.

When I first started earning a salary. A new console game was R900.. that is roughly close to $60. At the time it was like 15-1 or so... a brand new game on console for me now is R1400-1500... keep in mind the exchange rate is 18-1 now, we are getting pretty fucked here.
 
Essentially it comes down to patience. If you have patience you can wait and pay £20 - £30 for most games.

If your impatient and have that "Fear of Missing Out" then yes I suppose it is an expensive hobby.

I have no time to play that many games every year to justify paying full price for games. I buy probably 3-4 full price titles a year, sometimes 6 or 7! But then I am very selective about buying games on sale. My backlog is stupid as it is, I could probably never buy a game again and still never play them all before I die, but for me it is cheap enough hobby that I get a lot of value out of. Most of GAF probably feel they get good value otherwise they would just bail out. You obviously need to be smart about what you buy, and NEVER PREORDER.
 
They have tipped over their value, just a little.
 
Depend on the games i think, <10 hours cinematic, are overpriced, especially without much replay value, for me. As open world or good replaybility games, is it in the correct price, for me.
 
I expect at least one hour of entertainment per dollar spent. As games get more and more expensive to make, there seem to be fewer and fewer major releases that can live up to those expectations. Fine with me, though. I'll just play older games and indies.
 
Yes.
For 70 bucks I expect to get a minimum of quality, content and fun that justifies the price.
The last point is entirely subjective, but the only game I've bought this generation that has completely justified its price was Elden Ring and it didn't even cost 70 dollars.

But I despise the idea of "Standard Editions" costing 70 dollars (391 reais here in Brazil)...

The idea that I'm paying a big chunk of my minimum salary (Around 1.400 reais) on a game, and I'm missing out on content still, is one of the reasons I wrote my PS2, GameCube and 3DS backlog list.

I will live in the past 🤷🏽‍♂️ Whatever.
Not for nostalgia, but because I literally have to. I don't have money to blow on games.

Call me an "old men" screaming at the cloud, but I miss the days when you payed for a game, and got everything on the disk. And I don't think that's greedy of me to want that.

That's something depends on you and your taste. If you like the game enough then worth price and if not then don't buy it full price.

Money is less issue and more is time. Is the game worth it enough that's worth my time? That's the question I'm mostly asking.
 
Absolutely.

Video game companies were posting record profits when they decided games needed to cost AUD$125.00, not including the Deluxe edition upgrades, Premium edition upgrades, Ultra edition upgrades, DLC, Battle Passes, Microtransactions, and Sony's "Next Gen Upgrades". Anyone paying full price today is a sucker - and once the publishers have bitten consumers with overpriced trash that they catch on, it'll crash the industry.

Inflation is just a rich get richer scheme, it's not something that should be glamorised.
You're comment basically equates to - we could be getting more fucked than we already are.
 
Single player only games yes. Sorry that dev costs are so high but 70 for 14 hours of fun?
As much as people hate them, season passes that add content (diablo) are the future and they make me feel like i get my money worth.

Edit: I want to add BG3 is worth $70 actually it costs me 90 for physical and its worth it. The games replay value is thru the roof.
