Are Ikea couches serviceable?

Trying to get some furniture to fill in my new apartment but I can only comfortably spend around 500 dollars on a couch. Are ikea's couches alright and if so which line are better quality? Are there better places to go or should I be browsing Craigslist?

Thanks!

I think they're kind of meh. I don't know if you have an American Freight furniture store near you, but I was able to get a decent couch and matching loveseat for about $500.

They're not bad. My parents bought one and my brother bought one. The best part is the slip covers are completely removable on some versions so you can replace them all for like 100 bucks if they get ruined rather than replace the whole couch. Good if you use it frequently or have pets or children who are prone to accidents. They're really comfy too.

Depending on prices around where you live for $500 you can probably get a fairly good couch at an actual furniture store. For instance just doing a quick search of a furniture store around here that I know of.

You could go to Ikea and sit on one to see how you like it. If your budget is 500 to furnish your entire apartment, then yeah Ikea may be on your short list of places to go. I find Ikea's storage units/coffee tables to be great. The couches/chairs get the job done and comfy, but will never be confused with luxury. Again, with your budget I think that Ikea would be perfect.

I got my couch from West Elm, it was well worth the 1100$ investment.

Though I will say I bought a wingback style chair from Ikea in the as is section for 125$ and it was super comfy.

serviceable is the correct word to describe just about everything in that store.

IKEAs storage solutions are great, it's the larger furniture that does not last that well and you'll be replacing it sooner than you expect. Better to pay a bit more and have it last. Don't cheap out on beds or sofas.

I have the kivik sofa and enjoy it pretty well. Did add bed risers to the bottom to raise it up and give it "legs" like this one.

They do the job. That should be ikeas catchphrase.

Meh, their sofas are about 6" lower than they need to be and not cozy. They're like the park bench of couches. Out of all of IKEA's furniture, their sofas are the one thing I would never buy from them.

500 would not get you a good Ikea sofa, unless you want a 2-people love seat.

I had a $400 really good quality leather sofa, they don't stock kind (cheap leather) all the time. the current one I have is also an Ikea L shape, $1300 I think.

$800 would get you top of line leather Ikea long 3 -people sofa.

I thought I would be fine with an IKEA sofa, but then I sat on a Roomstogo sofa for a few hundred more and never turned back.

We just got one in our new apartment. A sectional that becomes a pull-out bed, plus some storage. It's certainly not the comfiest, but it does the job.

IKEA furniture is almost always better than similar priced furniture at other stores. The Ektorp, for example, is a good line. I had an Ektorp couch and love seat for 8 years. Very comfortable. My favorite part is that you can just replace the slip covers when they get nasty or if you want to change the color.

Sitting on one now. It is one that pulls out into a bed and it has been pretty useful for the 700 I paid for it 9 years ago. I should replace the cover on it because I have dogs who have been on it, but it has held up well.

I didn't get a couch but I did get a chez lounge from them I really like.
The attitudes towards Ikea from some is odd, they make good furniture.

Just grab a bottle of wood glue before assembling. Whenever you have to put a dowel in a hole, fill the hole about halfway with the glue. Put some on any pieces that are held together with those stupid locking cams as well.

Some of the cheaper ones are nice. There are some really expensive ones that are very nice. Go and sit.

Let them sit on it!

pay a bit more for a real nice one and it'll serve you well. the cheaper ones are definitely meant more to be abused by college kids and in dorms.

The IKEA furniture I've had has held up just as long as much more expensive furniture. Comfort can vary just like anything so go test it out.

If you do buy IKEA just keep any special tools that might be included in a bag just in case you need to tighten or take apart something.

Our home has an IKEA futon (L-shaped one, not the three folded one). Still working after three years. There are several things from IKEA that are more than serviceable, including sofa, bed frame, mattress.

I have an Ektorp for the kids room. We would be on like our tenth sofa by now if we couldn't wash the slip covers. Serviceable definitely covers it I think. Most mid range sofas tend to be pretty crappy as well, not convinced you get what you pay for.

I would not purchase a used couch. Ikea couches are fine. i would have bought one if there were an Ikea near me.

I have cats so I don't really want to buy expensive furniture, I've been rocking Ektorp furniture for almost a decade (since you can buy new covers for it when the cats are done playing with the old ones) and it's been pretty good. They're comfortable, and it's held up perfectly.

Also, great to sleep on, people that sleep over always complement me on it, heh.

They're not the best, but I have a ÂŁ250 Argos sofa that's lasted 8 years at this point, so for your budget you'll almost certainly be getting a better piece of furniture than mine.

I had one. I thought it was OK. My girlfriend HATED that thing though.

Now we have a real couch, and yeah she's right it's way better. But for the money, IKEA couches ain't bad.

My wife and I still have our IKEA sofa for our living room we got in 2013. It's pretty comfortable for what we paid for, it wa me around 500 if I recall. It's a bit small if you plan on having more then 3 people over to share it but if not, it will do the job for you. We are looking to replace it soon but that's because we have a daughter now and our family likes to visit and we need more space for seating.

I got one of these. It's nice.

It's a couple years old at this point, and I can feel some of the cushions starting to lose their support. It should last for a bit longer though. Can probably just restuff it if I need to.

I don't have an Ikea sofa but I have lots of other furniture from them. Everything has held up great after 5+ years.

I really don't get the hate.

I was wondering this myself. We were looking at something like this for living room.

But if we can find something cheaper than a grand, I'd be all ears.

Our lasted about 4 years before giving up. The design of this particular model was bad, since the legs were attached to the arms of the sofa/couch, so the base where you sit was bolted into the arms. Eventually it collapsed.

To Ikea's credit though, their 10 year warranty was true, and they sent out a repair guy within a couple of days and he fixed it all.

I'd say for a first time home they are fine. They do the job, and are priced accordingly.

I've owned 3 Kiviks

Black leather one was best by far, still have it in a spare room

White leather one shows dirt and creases more, still good after years though

Dark grey fabric one was sold but in great condition too - tried the chaise lounge addon but the foam on that was a real piece of crap. Got it replaced under warranty though - don't recommend. Get an ottoman instead.

I have had an IKEA couch, chair, and ottoman for 4 years, which includes 2 moves. I think they're perfectly fine - and pretty damn comfy.
