Are men naturally better looking than women? (Don't shoot the messenger)

Let me start off by saying that this is not a position that I myself hold, but have heard repeated by men and women alike for years now. Starting with my mother, who said that the reason why women use makeup is to keep pace with the beauty of men and that they are more naturally beautiful. After that I've heard it sporadically from other women, and occasionally from men, some of whom are more of the MRA-lite Reddit crowd and others who strike me as normal people.

What do you think Gaf?

p.s. Please don't hurt me

Entirely subjective. I will say it does allow women who are not naturally as "attractive" to social standards to "doll" themselves up and appear more attractive than they are naturally. But that's as others have stated because we have an unrealistic expectation of what beauty is. Both Men and Women have perpetuated this, mainly for purposes of industry I.E cosmetics.

There is no universal standard.

Some will say men are naturally better looking, others will say women. Some will say some specific group or males or females, others will say all humans are ugly and they want some dragon love.

So basically, it depends on who you ask.

I'd imagine being accustomed to women wearing make up would influence how we feel about women without make up.

I'd suspect it's social conditioning, but it's not like we can say for sure..

there's no standard

that said, I sort of agree with Elaine from Seinfeld, who once described a woman's body as a work of art, and a man's body like a jeep-made for getting around

Actually, there's research suggesting that beauty was probably selected for in women when our species was still operating under natural selection. Beautiful daughters have always been more likely to marry above their social classes than beautiful men were, which in the past would have had survival benefits to them and their children.

That also explains why women retain childish features a lot longer than men do (usually losing their soft features in their 30s instead of their 20s like men do).

EDIT: All of this hasn't really mattered much in the past 100 years though.

nah, form + functionality, homoerotic grecoroman sculptors had the right idea.

I find everything about the male body off-putting: sharp and lumpy(muscley) and just weird

Woman typically have a soft curvy warm appearance that I think is much more appealing

Obviously people come in all shapes and sizes so there will always be exceptions

If you are attracted to women sure. Otherwise, hell no.

The question depends on a bunch of factors, like beauty standards and location.

Beauty is often associated with face symmetry. An experiment could be made to determine if there is a relevant difference between the average levels of symmetry of men and women.

Still, the definition of what makes someone good looking or not is mostly subjective. Depends of which type of criteria you establish.

I've got a thing for curves so for me women pull ahead in the natural beauty department. Unless of course there's an especially slender and curvaceous man.

Men have thicker skin layers and more naturally occurring collagen.

The extra collagen is also why some tend to age better than women.

I don't think that has much to do with it. Men "age better" because youthful male features aren't valued at a premium in the same way. Getting a few lines on your face and a bit of grey in your hair can just add rugged charm if you are an attractive male and stay in shape.

Women experiencing the exact same aging are said to look old.

Men have hotter bodies lol, but I am biased since I am gay lol. I think it's entirely subjective.

edit: I do think that men age better than women do. Just look at George Clooney vs any other female actress without plastic surgery around his age.

Weird.

I always heard from men and women alike that the female body is much cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing.

Face wise I immediately think of somewhere like Russia where the men aren't very handsome but the women are off the charts.

This is the first time I've ever heard anyone make such a claim. Usually you hear the opposite.

It's all rather pointless and subjective.

As someone who is attracted to women I think they are better looking, but from a more removed standpoint I think that there is a more narrow view of what constitutes an attractive woman as opposed to an attractive man.

Sometimes I wonder that when we're taking selfies with my bf. He's so freaking photogenic, he looks good almost on any photo lol

As a woman I can comfortably say I think, on average, men tend to age better than women.

Celebrities - maybe, male celebrities don't torture themselves with plastic surgery as much as women, after all. Out of older men I know - not really, old people all look like shit, meh

Have you ever seen a man who actually knows how to use cosmetics properly?

I suppose rather, "Have you realized you've seen a man who knows how to use cosmetics properly?" would be the better question. Because men are "expected" not to use cosmetics the preferred use is often rules out the more bombastic touches, but it's no less effective. Basically, it's the equivalent of women who use cosmetics but in hopes of maintaining a "natural" look.

I think it's important to take into account the fact that a woman's body has to go through and endure much more stress over her life than a man's body.

Women wear makeup because beauty is expected of women, unlike most men.

This.

By the way, misogyny is not only a MRA thing. "Normal" people, whatever that is, are influenced by it. I wouldn't discard anyone from being sexist in at least some situations, not even myself. Our society is still very patriarchal.
