Are there any games that you would consider Pixar quality?

Yep, and the short that plays before the movie starts is mind blowing. Going to need a lot of clouds to get videogame graphics that good.

No worries, we have Naughty Dog.

A new Jak and Daxter with 8GB 4.5GB of GDDR5 RAM? Imagine the fur.

conker_live_and_reloaded_xbox_palmasoft_05.jpg

If this was possible on the original Xbox ... oh god.

Not the full game obviously but The Vehemoth Phosbat (second boss from Pikmin 3) is an incredible looking character model, the skin actually looks like real leather and the fur is amazing looking.

If the bosses in the Mario Galaxy games are anything to go by then we should see some great looking bosses from Nintendo in the coming years, esp on games that did not start off as Wii games.

Luigi's Mansion 2 often feels like a Pixar movie due to the charm and quality of the animations which are used to give character to Luigi and the ghosts.

I can't wait to see a finalized KNACK. I think it's the closest thing we have to a Pixar quality video game in art style, and graphics. It's graphic fidelity still needs a lot more improvement though.

Sonic Unleashed. Srs.

And before you retort, shut up and watch the cinematics. Really look at the atmosphere and presention for the stages and locals. Some of the closest art direction to a Pixar film, if not THE closest this generation. The appealing fun character designs, vibrant color schemes and color keys, soft shapes and lighting, the list goes on and on. And if the question is actually talking about naming a pixar movie's IQ game equivalent then lol.

Pixar is soulless trash with a usually horrible art style. Think I'd prefer games that strived for "Studio Ghibli quality."

It's OK to like things dude, noone will think any less of you.

Saw Monsters U this week, the short before is stunning, as is a lot of the photorealism in the movie.

I think the fact that so many people in this thread jump to technical discussion shows how immature the industry is and how so many don't get what makes Pixar such quality. It's the same thing that separates Disney from most other animators.

I think (sadly considering their recent direction) Nintendo are about the only company I see who come close in terms of "personality" (for want of a better word). Knack seems soulless, the ReBoot comparisons are apt and I don't know if I'm missing something but R&C just seems like a very average video game to me graphically speaking.

I actually saw A Bug's Life the other day and I was surprised at how dated it looked.

The early Pixar films are very simple (geometrically).

I think Ratchet and Clank and Knack are good mentions.

Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations really have the Pixar look. Hedgehog engine is really good. Amazing for such an engine and it's evolved into the Luminous engine for S-E (Agni's Philosophy)

Knack isn't a big title for Sony, so the fact that it's even mentioned says a lot.

I don't think we will see Pixar quality...

No matter what Pixar has the advantage...the chose the camera angle at all times...the add effects after to improve how it looks at that angle.

Can't do that in a game.
In engine cutscenes. I think it'll be possible at least during small set conversational scenes.

Clearly not the same style, but Ni No Kuni deserves a mention. As an overall package, it probably comes the closest to "Pixar quality."

Toy Story (1995)

Toy Story 3: The Videogame (360/PS3, 2010)

Videogame graphics are definitely getting a lot better, but they're hardly approaching "Pixar Quality". It's almost impossible to reach the image quality of a pre-rendered movie in real-time.

A lot of games are starting to look similar though. If your definition of "Pixar Quality" is simply "high quality computer animation", then there a quite a few games fitting that criteria.

This video disagrees.

^^^ Gameplay of Knack

What am I suppose to be looking at? The graphics or game play ?

If I were to critquie this, on my computer I can only see this video in 720p and it doesn't look too good from what i can see. Everything looks very grainy. As for the game design, this feels like a Pixar Game. But.....I hold Pixar on a pedestal and I can't say knack is a Pixar game, Pixar like...I now agree more Dreamworks but I still thought it was a Pixar game when I saw the trailer.

That's a really low resolution and low quality image of the Toy Story game. I bet if it was rendered at a high resolution and a crisp picture was posted the quality wouldn't be too far off from Toy Story 1.

Graphically? A Crack in Time is up there, not quite exactly but damn that game looks good on the big screen.

Was hoping this answer would pop up quickly. Nice.

Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time is definitely the closest I've experience to "Pixar quality" in terms of visuals. The story seems like something straight from Pixar as well for that matter.

A brillant game all around.

Everyone will laugh at me because it's not in HD but Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 gave me that Pixar vibe. Stunning animation, vibrant colourful worlds and that feeling of being a kid again where everything is so magical.

This is my thought. Even if Nintendo doesn't quite pull it off in graphic detail or quality of storytelling, the attention to detail (e.g., fine tuning of gameplay mechanics) and sense of wonder is definitely there, and the Mario Galaxy games definitely at least felt like "Pixar movie as Nintendo video game" was what Nintendo was shooting for.

I think I might even argue that in the earlier days, Nintendo might even have been looking to Disney as a model for creating content that is suitable for children, but appeals to people of all ages, and as Pixar movies are basically the star Disney content at this point (and largely the standard-setters for animated movies from all companies of the last ten years), I'm sure that Nintendo looks to Pixar stylings and approach as an inspiration for their Mario and Zelda games at this point.

In terms of image quality, nothing has come close. Overall, Portal 2 and MK8 have struck me as the most "Pixar-esque". But that's still in a completely separate world.

Maybe something will match early Dreamworks films some time this generation.
Low bar.

I am shocked by the number of posts that would even imply - much less insist, that a single game has even come close to even Toy Story-era Pixar greatness. Whether technically, artistically, or storytelling - no game has come close. Not even fucking close.

Luxor Jr. (1986):

This famous short is from the mid-80s, and if you were to tell most people it was an E3 teaser for an independent PS3 game - nobody would doubt you.

But enough about what Pixar was doing in the 80's...

Cars 2 (CNET):

One of the keys to Pixar's ability to do what it does is the giant, powerful render farm located in its main headquarters building here. This is serious computing power, and on "Cars 2," it required an average of 11.5 hours to render each frame.
But some sequences were especially complex, particularly those involving ray tracing--which involves simulating light hitting surfaces, essentially "trying to simulate photons." And as a result, a huge amount of computing power was needed to process frames that took as much as 80 or 90 hours to render, Shah said. And that meant that the studio "bulked up our render farm."
He said that Pixar had to triple its size, and today, the render farm features 12,500 cores on Dell render blades. As well, the file servers, network backbone, and every other piece of the computing puzzle was boosted in order to handle the making of "Cars 2."

A high budget movie vs a low budget game. Great comparison.
